Yes, I get that. Gamester81 somehow had smaller volumes of label types, and maybe he just ate the cost or maybe he did this in a cost effective way. Not looking to debate this endlessly, just suggesting to reach out to other game producers to gain insight and maybe learn a trick or two, perhaps learn of a new contact, perhaps find a way to satisfy all without introducing new costs. Just suggesting, but obviously people will do whatever they want to do. If it was me, I would want to know all options available to me especially regarding cost efficiencies and customer satisfaction.

Yeah at the time the computer interfaces they provided were actually fairly powerful for the cost compared to dedicated PCs. But you have a point in that they were trying too hard to 1-up each other rather than focus on their games and unique offerings; Coleco with Arcade games and Intellivision with talking games and really fun non-arcade titles. They could have divided the landscape like that and both been very successful.

After 17 Years....It's Finally Mine!
Troy_Whelan replied to DaytonaUSA's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Wow, that is really nice and a bonus that your wife likes it especially as you can both play at the same time! Good for you. Regarding the power strip question, I have 3 cabinets and always use the "surge protector" to turn them off. Make sure you have a surge protector and not simply a power strip. The surge protector will protect it during a power outage and a power strip is just more outlets. Big difference. -
I wish they had kept going, and even wish they would pick back up now. Maybe not as a major distribution center, but at least like the homebrew market here to see their dreams finally completed. The big fights back then such as Mattel not wanting Coleco games to play on Intellivision II, and Coleco reportedly not putting much effort into their Atari 2600 games, and Atari not wanting anyone else to have a console or make games helped to fuel the downfall...that and the mass distribution of crap games at the end. It would be great to see an upgraded Intellivision now similar to the SGM for CV and/or the rumored CV2.

The problem is about 40 - 60 of us supported the "cart only"effort as it was a cool and unique collectors item, only to find out later that the same cart (with 1 added credit) would be produced endlessly in a sealed CIB version so soon after the cart only version. If I was in that position, I would have wanted to keep my early supporters happy first then new customers second. Regardless of gamers, collectors, or hoarders, I think everyone wants to know their purchase was worthwhile and money well spent. We can all learn from this and I am simply suggesting that we not experience this in the same way again. Early supporters should feel that money simply went to support the overall effort and the late supporters ended up with a better product. Early supporters should feel like they got a unique one-of-a-kind item and late supporters should feel like they got an awesome sealed CIB game. Win-win situation - that is what I am trying to get people to see and consider going forward. A way for us to want to support sellers as we feel the support is justified and a way for late supporters to feel like they still got something very nice without negating the early supporters. Hopefully that explains my view; looking out for seller/gamer/collector/hoarder/early supporter/late supporter in a way that works for all. I would expect that the CIB version would cost more that the "open"version as that is how it works in every electronic store I have even been in, so there should not be a major concern regarding a unique label. People can disagree if they choose and support will go down.

Fine, not sure why there is such an attitude. I am a bit surprised that you printed hundreds of labels for a game you expected to sell only a handful of cart only versions. I expected that you had NO MORE LABELS as you sold 120 carts, hence the suggestions/questions I was making; trying to be helpful while looking out for the gamers/collectors/hoarders that bought the cart only, then the upgrade kit; trying to keep it unique from the CIB version that would not have existed if we had not bought the cart only version. Kind of ironic when you think about it, and yes I was trying to get you to think about it. Others have commented publicly in this thread and privately about how they bought the cart as it was a unique collectors item, not because they thought it would be part of an open package costing the same as a sealed package with no obvious benefit for early supporters. Lesson learned for me - speak up when announcing a purchase, otherwise keep my thoughts to myself as there is not a receptive audience.
-
Time for me to just leave this alone as it seems you and I are having two completely different conversations. It seems completely rational to me to simply change the background font on labels that have yet to be printed and there is no added cost as you have to print labels anyway; no added cost as you are not redesigning the label just changing the background color - and even if the cost went up a dollar or two for each CIB version, so what. Again - this is a suggestion for efforts going forward and I keep suggesting inexpensive ways to do this so no need for you to color the shells with a magic marker.
-
No need to re-post anything as I get it. Unfortunately not everyone is understanding what I am saying. The ONLY thing I am saying is that it would have been nice if the cart shell color or the cart label was different between the cart only version and the CIB version. That is it. Someway to distinguish between the two. I understand HOW we got here and frankly it does not matter. What matters is WHAT unfolds. I think it would be fairly easy, and well received, to simply have a unique cart label for the CIB release so that once opened they are visually different. If too late now, fine. I am just suggesting to keep it in mind if the situation arises again.

Ok, that clears it up. I understand what you guys are saying, and I am happy to get my games, but it is still a bit odd to have a cart only version that when upgraded is about the same cost as the sealed and numbered version yet the only unique characteristic about the cart only version is the lack of SoulBuster in the credits and no serial number on the box. I guess I am just thinking how Gamester81 had red cart shells for the Kickstarter campaign and then had black cart shells afterwards. Too late now I now, just food for thought if we get in this situation again. I know I am not alone in thinking the early version should be noticeably different from the later version and the early version should be somehow more desirable for collectors that supported this from the start.

I am glad I signed up for the carts, and equally glad upgrade kits are coming. However I do have mixed feelings about the CIB versions. Don't get me wrong, I am glad they are coming but something is just not right with it. I get that the early cart versions will have a slightly different ROM with respect to the credits (no SoulBuster), and I get that the serialized versions 1-100 will have SoulBuster in the credits; but is anything going to be different about versions 101+? I hope so - not expecting major changes in gameplay or anything, just something to show it is not the early cart only version and it is different from versions 1-100 by something other than credits and serial number. I am assuming that SoulBuster will be removed from the credits for versions 101+, but then that makes the cart for those just like the early versions. Seems like the early cart only versions should be kept unique for the early adopters. Even a unique label on the carts for 101+ would be great. Kind of like the 2nd release of Jeepers Creepers had the 30th anniversary label, maybe Old School carts 101+ could have an Intellivision 35th anniversary label.. That would make cart only have an original label with no SoulBuster in credits, CIB 1-100 have same label with SoulBuster in credits, then 101+ have slightly new cart label with no SoulBuster in credits. Each grouping being clearly unique. Willie - Have you considered having something unique about carts 101+? I realize changes add costs, but this seems like a minimal cost and effort that may generate more sales while supporting customer loyalty. Troy

ColecoVision Arcade Controller by GRIPS03
Troy_Whelan replied to AtariBuff's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
As the controller is being modified to support another console as a controller, I did not see a problem either. Especially as the same could be said with the newer controllers; still modifying a controller to support another console, just a newer controller. If fact I bought one of these modified for the ColecoVision and I preferred having the original NeoGeo controller used as I feel the earlier controllers are more stable and reliable than the controllers made today for the new NeoGeo. I think the way Grips modified it was spot on and I am very glad I purchased it and even happier that it is an original part of gaming history. Troy -

Any 2600 titles from back in the day still impressive?
Troy_Whelan replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Atari 2600
Games I found impressive at the time and still today are: Robot Tank - With the changing weather, awesome visuals, and adreneline rush this is still a great game Demon Attack - The strategy element and variety of enemies makes this game timeless Megamania - The challenge to reach 1,000,000 is still impressive today. Really like this game. Wizard of Wor - I was, and still am, impressed by getting this game done so well on the Atari 2600 Perhaps more, but those are at the top for me. -
I had placed two orders about a month ago and they arrived yesterday, so yours will likely arrive any day now.

This is incredible news! Seems like each week there is some new and unexpected fantastic news about either Intellivision or ColecoVision games! -
Being that you are in communication with Daniel, maybe you can follow up on this? It could be that he thinks he is done and it is up to Dale, and Dale could think he is waiting on Daniel...just need to bring Daniel into the conversation. Troy

Intellivision Ebay Roundup
Troy_Whelan replied to IntellivisionDude's topic in Intellivision / Aquarius
Not that bad of a price for someone just starting and wanting to play. If you use $3 per game ($132), $15 Intellivoice, $15 System Changer, then that leave $55.50 for the Intellivision for a total of $217.50. A little pricey when you look at it that way, but then again some of the games are worth more than $3...pricey for us but not for someone that just wants a system and games to play. -
