In case anyone is interested, all the new purchases I have received so far from eBay have now been added to my web site (excluding games, I really must get around to writing some more reviews!!!)
-
p.s. How did an Action! thread get turned into a Forth thread?
That's my fault, sorry. Both are interesting languages for the A8!
Carsten
At the risk of hijacking this thread again, I think the Atari has such a rich and diverse range of languages. And many of those have several variants. Various Forth variants have already been mentioned, but also different C and Pascal implementations exist, and I wouldn't even like to hazard a guess at the amount of Basic interpreters and compilers that are out there.
I think it goes to show, once more, how versatile the Atari 8-bit was and still is. There is pretty much a language for everyone.
As people know, my primary language at the moment is Kyan Pascal, but when I move on to doing some games, I am probably going to use Quick or Action!. And when my son is older, if he is interested, I will teach him to program the old fashioned way, starting with Logo.
-
I just realised, for some reason, I seem to be collecting programming languages!
I currently have: cc65, Kyan Pascal, Action!, Quick, Atari Assembler, Atari Macro Assembler, Turbo Basic, volksForth and Logo. Oh, and not to forget good old Atari Basic.
I'm getting very multi-lingual

Here is final version of the program with some little amendments: title screen added, additional line at the top and some optimizations and bug fixes. Documentation and download is here: http://gury.atari8.info/sprite_engine/sprite_engine.htm
DOS used is Atari DOS 2.5 with automatic loading of the program.
Regards
I've just had a very quick look at the final version, Gury. Love it. Very professional.
I can see this being used by a number of games programmers.

I'm listing this here instead of the market place as I'm not after any money for this, apart from the postage costs.
I have a PAL 800XL up for grabs.
It has Rev B Basic and no modifications.
The case has yellowed with age, but as far as I know, this works. I did have some trouble with this a few months back, for some reason it wouldn't start up, but I tried it out this morning and it seems ok.
This was my original 800XL, bought new back in 1985. It comes with a power supply and RF lead.
I just need to offload a lot of stuff as I have just had the notice to quit my current house and will be moving to a much smaller place in the next couple of months.
So, for the price of postage, grab an 800XL

Thanks Mark, I'll send him a PM.

My copy of Star Raiders arrived this morning. I haven't played this for over 20 years. What a blast! It's as good as I remember, I've been playing it all day
I have a copy of Star Raiders II coming as well. I've never played that, so I am really looking forward to it.
-
I just managed to get a copy of the Atari Logo cartridge.
Does anyone know of an online manual?
-
Any dead ones? I'm really eyeing up the case....
Yeah, me too. I think you and I are probably thinking the same thing

-
I do think the XL styling was nice but I'm not sure I'd say it was the best looking 8 bit.
To each their own
So what do other people think are the best looking 8 bits?
-
Finally got another copy of Star Raiders (how can I possibly call myself an Atarian without one?) and an Atari Logo cartridge. Now to teach my 4 year old how to program

-
no, US only, and only 4 months at that

Damn. No wonder I can never find one.
But, despite the positioning of the cartridge slot, I still prefer the look of the 800XL to just about any other 8-bit ever sold (in the UK).
-
I've got a few relatives working with the 8bits now using emulators and on several occasions they have asked if there is an online version of the DOS manuals. I thought I saw SDX online somewhere, but I'm also wondering if there has been an HTMLized version of the text to the Atari versions.
Karl
I found this, hope it helps

Was the 1200XL ever sold in the UK?
-
I think the XL line looks the best over all, however I do think that the XEGS (my preferred 8-bit) could have been the best looking. Those damn pastel buttons I think kill it. I guess I like the fact that the keyboard is detached and the Atari logo on it is larger than any of the atari computers.

Funnily enough, the 800XL only has the Atari logo on the label on the underside with the serial number.
-
I've NEVER been able to figure out how to play that game.I couldn't figure it out myself and neither could my best friend !!
I just had a try...me neither!
I think you need to load the packages onto the rocket, but not sure how.
-
Now, where to get some endless paper these days?

I don't know about Germany, but try this link

I got burned on EBAY as the buyer poorly packaged the ATARI 800 and I got it in pieces and there was no insurance available so that money was wasted but I did salvage alot of parts though for the 800 I got from another EBAY seller and it is in great shape.
I hate it when that happens.
I had a problem with the postal service recently. I bought a CD from ebay, but when it arrived, it was obvious that the packaging had been cut. Needless to say the CD was missing. I am currently trying to claim from Royal Mail for the item.

When I said 'non-working', of course, I meant irreparable

-
I think Apple's and Atari's have the most personality, out of all the late 70's/early 80's computers.
I would have to disagree with you there. Sinclairs computers oozed personality
-
I just thought...
Has anyone taken one of these (non-working) and gutted it and replaced the innards with modern components?
There's an upgrade project for someone

You'd need a onboard sound and gfx, but a branded Dual Core with 1GB memory, etc

-
Now that is a nice machine. It wouldn't look out of place next to some of today's PC's either.
That's the first time I've seen close up picture of any of the Atari PC's. In fact it was only a few years ago that I even learnt that Atari made PC compatibles.
-
. However, (and here is my dose of blasphemy), I would have prefered the cartidge slot to be at the side of the machine, rather than at the top. (
ok, ok, I'm leaving now)It is on the 1200 XL

Ha! So, not such a blasphemous comment after all

What's the latest Atari related thing(s) you've bought on ebay?
