Hej Pengwin,
Good luck with your magazine, I hope you will find some contributors with their articles. I like the comparisons of Atari and C64 games on your Blog section. I am more and more intersted also in ZX Spectrum, so it's good to have such a site to begin with, thanks.
The Spectrum is a great machine. Especially when you consider the price of it when it came out. One of the best things about the Spectrum is that there is only one graphics mode, so mixing high resolution graphics with text is a snap, and you get to use 15 colours (8 really, although 7 of them can have 2 luminance's - bright black is still black
). The biggest problems with the Speccy were the keyboard, although I kinda like the rubber keys, and the colour clash. And then for m/l programmers was the problem of the screen mapping. But price/performance, you couldn't really beat it back then. -
Once I find out how much space I'm going to be 'allocated', I hope to get my A8 collection really moving, although I'm not really collecting computers, it's just everything else

Couldn't resist this one, my first real computer was a 400 which I saved my paper round money to upgrade to 32K.
This has 48K!!
Just need to find a basic cart now.
And 3 mates to play combat asteroids

I saw that one up for sale. Almost got it myself, but I need to sell a load of stuff ready for moving house

Wow! feels like I'm resurrecting the dead by posting in this thread. Oh well, c'est la vie.
I have made a few changes to my site, as I have detailed in my blog. Mainly, I have removed the Oric section to allow me to concentrate the site on Atari and Spectrum (also, I am hopefully moving house soon, so I am having a cull of my stuff).
I am also looking to start to produce an Atari magazine/newsletter. I would like this to be bi-monthly, with articles covering all aspects of the Atari scene. If anyone would like to contribute, please contact me with your ideas. I'm particularly interested in articles about programming in various languages and hardware fixes/modifications.

The Competition Pro is my all time favourite, although the original CX40 is rugged as hell and never let me down.

no numerical expressions (c = a + b)
no boolean expressions ( if a = 1 OR b = 2 then .... )
Both these limitations can be overcome quite easily with careful planning

Hi Pengwin, are you interested in Action! programming also?
I will be looking into it. If it's easier than Quick, then I will probably use Action!.
I am keeping my options open at the moment. I wanted the cart so that I could evaluate the language on my A8 rather than an emulator. Plus it's a nice addition to my growing collection.

Once again, Deathtrappomegranite has proven himself to be a total star!
I mentioned that I was looking for an Action cart, in the post this morning was an Action cart with The Action Toolkit.
Thanks DTP, your one in a million.

You didn't mention which time zone
and it's showing I'm not Java enabled but no link to get it. Strange that I don't already have that loaded though ... hmmmmm.Timezone is CST.
What browser and OS are you using? Most systems have Java installed by default

Thank you all for the information. I just want to know this, because I am searching for most common format to work with when releasing something to the public. I think single density format is most useful, 90K is enough for normal things. I will use enhanced density just for backups. Too bad Atari didn't put some more logic (which would not cost it too much) in 1050 disk drive for double density. But ok, fourtunatelly we have Happy and Speedy enhancements, which are very popular.
If your program will fit within 90K, then I would stick to single density. Anything else would alienate some people.

I've just had this confirmed, the 16K model was exactly the same as the 48K, but with empty sockets, where the 48K had the extra RAM.
-
Does the 48K version of the Spectrum just have more memory and better sound or are there other differences? How fast do you think the emulator will be in the end?
I think the only difference between the two was the memory, although to be 100% sure, I'd have to check.
-
Not sure if all 16K programs run on 48K systems... Do you think 16K emulation would work on a stock 800XL? Even ZX-81 emulation would be great fun!
To my knowledge, all 16K spectrum programs will work on the 48K machines.
I would love to see a 16K emulator on a stock 800XL

Well...I am sorry I missed Wednesday's chat... but I am now an official auntie to the most beautiful little boy in the world. (of course I am kinda biased!) His mother went into labor on Wednesday, and Charles "Charlie" Eugene Varner Saldana was born at 11:47 pm on Thursday, February 15, 2007. He weighed 7 lbs, 1 oz, and was 19 1/2 inches long.

Congratulations Auntie JellE. Charlie is a beautiful little fella. You must be thrilled.

What error are you getting?
If the cable isn't receiving data, then it should be ERROR - 138.
If you're getting data corruption, then it'll probably get a 139, 140, 142 or 143.
I'm not getting an error number. If I try a commercial tape by holding START (or START & OPTION), the load times out and I go to the BASIC prompt (or the Self Test).
If I try to use CLOAD, it just sits and waits for the data (although I haven't left it running this way yet to see if it times out).
I have just tried a different SIO lead, no success. I have also tried both SIO ports at the back of the 1010, still no change.
-
I have recently acquired a 1010 tape deck, however, there appears to be a problem and I need advice.
It plays the tapes and records them, but my 800XL doesn't seem to be getting the signal. If I try any pre-recorded tape, I get a boot error (?)
And if I try to CSAVE a small program and then CLOAD it, I can here the data, but fails to load into th e800XL.
I have cleaned the tape heads, but still no luck.
Any ideas?

Quote seen in various 80's/90's computer mags....'people program games on pc's to make money', 'people program games on an atari for the enjoyment'
So true

An 800XL is a console. A console is a computer device you interface directly with (normally via a keyboard)
Oddly enough, it's not considered a Videogame console, which is really an odd irony since that's all most folks do with them.
i ment to say "console" because all youngsters do know "PC" or "console" but i am not sure if they know even today that there are more than "one PC". i am not sure if they know apple as alternative already...

as i am using/coding/playing 800xl/130xe now for more than 20 years... of course i realised that its a pretty 800xl he was playing...

Sorry if I sounded slightly argumentative guys, I had just polished off a bottle and a half of merlot.
I've never considered the 800XL as a console. To me, a console is a computer without a keyboard (eg: 2600, PS2, etc). I guess it's all a matter of interpretation.
(btw: seriously hungover now

not trying to sound too old, I personally think that that a lot of game developers today concentrate too much on the look of the games. 20 years ago, we didn't really have that luxury, so the gameplay was the most important thing. Let's face it, halflife 2 looks a damn sight better than Asteroids, but I know which one I keep going back to.
(still pished, pouring another glass of Merlot

my friends kids came round after school two weeks ago as their mum was out.
Jack age 12 saw my 800xl and asked to play on it.
He was saving for a Play station 3, but decided that the 800XL was far cooler.
He has since bought an XL, and borrowed some carts from me. His mates all think it is really cool.
He has even started to learn BASIC
and my 4 year old daughter loves "dot man"

I rest my case, classics will always be classics. Whilst the PS2, Wii and XBox 360 can deliver some amazing titles, I truly believe that the eighties were the best years for games. Yes, we had our fair share of crap, but that was outweighed by the innovation of the era.
(btw: I am slighty inebriated)

does he know that the console he is using has less power than a micro wave or your tv set?
Without trying to sound picky, he's not using a console, its the 800XL in the picture
But since he normally plays on a playstation 2 or my wifes dual core PC, I think its a great testament to the longevity of these games that he actually asks me to put them on for him.

Afraid not. I have a few issues of Kyan Update (the newsletter), but no extension disks. As far as I know, Kyan produced 3 extension packs, one was for graphics (including PMG), another for disk operations, and I can't remember the third. They were planning to release others, but I have no idea if these were ever done.

XLs are the best looking systems.

I would have to agree with what seems the general consensus so far. I much prefer the look of the XL series to the others (but then my first Atari was an 800XL). The XE's seemed to be trying to look like their bigger cousins (the ST series) and the 400/800, just a little too 70's for me. However, (and here is my dose of blasphemy), I would have prefered the cartidge slot to be at the side of the machine, rather than at the top. (
ok, ok, I'm leaving now)
