This looks so awesome and it is great news to see it up and running again. It is such a fun game and now it looks great too!! Atari Leaf must be fired up for this one and watching it closely as it is his favourite game. Will it have the game varieties with the barriers?? I like how your clown can get stuck up there for a while and rack up a lot of points.

Shades colours work okay for me but I was playing the PAL version. I have the same colours problem with Chunkout which is a cool game. I am glad to hear that Crossniq might work on the Atari. I have been enjoying it the last few weeks. Would be great if someone has a crack at it one day.

Wow!! Thanks playsoft - that is awesome!! I have been playing Shades on my phone after your recommendation. I will really enjoy it on the Atari so thank you. I have found another good one that might work on Atari on the Nintendo Switch called Crossniq+. You can play two player and it is addictive and fans of the genre will enjoy it. Possibly too many colours going in different directions but would be good if it works. It is also a little like Multicross which I enjoy on the phone.

Shades looks awesome and I would love to try it out. You don’t have a PAL version by any chance. Chunkout is another one I have just discovered which is a bit like Same Game. It is really fun to play and still works but the colours are a bit weird and jarring. I know that not many were released of this one. Was there a PAL version of this?? I would love to get hold of a copy if there is.

I am in the same boat in having no idea in terms of the programming behind it but I am pretty amazed with what we have already. Pick n Pile has a lot of sprites and colours so that gives hope. Plotting is another good one and I would love to see Magical Drop on Atari - great game!! I am not familiar with Money Puzzle Exchanger so will look into that one. I wish they could add one more colour to Klax and maybe make it take up more of the screen. The two shades of blue can be difficult to distinguish but otherwise it is a fantastic version. I can play these puzzle games for hours and most Atari games don’t really lend themselves to that sort of thing.

[Robo Mechanic]

Robo Mechanic is a great little game that is well suited to the Atari. I like that it looks good in PAL and it is one that if the games where it runs for a fair while. So many Atari 2600 games are very quick. This is game is a definite thumbs up from me.

I had an Amiga and didn’t know about Lin Wu’s challenge or Sichuan. Thank you for the info and I will look into these two as I really like these kinds of games. I would love to see a version of Dr Mario or Puyo Puyo on the Atari. As they have both appeared on the original Gameboy, there is a good chance they would both work okay.

Yes save2600, Chetiry and Strat-O-Gems are sensational games!! Chetiry was the first homebrew I bought, along with Pacman 4K. Strat-O-Gems is another ‘must buy’ and is on my list. It is a great version of columns. DavyK, that is good news!!! I like Dr Mario too, but would love to see Puyo Puyo 2 or Tetris Attack if they can be done. Lumines is another favourite but with the way the squares form and the line that goes across, I think this one might be a struggle. It seems to have a lot of the bells and whistles the others don’t have. PAC Attack is a bit of a ‘hidden gem’ amongst block falling puzzle games. That would be cool and I think it would be possible. It would add to all the great Pacman games we have seen recently. I guess I posted this because I am playing a lot of these at the moment while the world is in lockdown. Good for competing with other members of the family. 3s, 2048, Qb and Assembloids are also getting a good run. Actually, what about Chu Chu Rocket?? That is a great little game that might be possible!! I say this when obviously I have no idea. I just find it really interesting and am amazed when they pull it off. I am also playing a lot of Crazy Balloon and Kurukuru Kururin on the GBA. Two more games quickly came to mind actually. Molemania and Pirate Ship Higemaru??? I think Molemania would be tough with the underground flipping mechanic but such a great game that we possible in theory. Pirate Ship Higemaru would be possible based on Pengo. I like Pengo but it is a bit too easy so a more challenging Pirate Ship would be awesome. I wouldn’t have asked in the past but if Zookeeper is possible, maybe these are too.

I really enjoy block falling puzzle games and a lot of good ones have come out over the years. Graphics are less important in this genre and it is all about gameplay. Therefore I think the Atari 2600 is well suited to a lot of the games below. Some might have too many bells and whistles but I was wondering what you all thought. The following are what I consider to be the best block falling puzzle games ever. I was wondering, which ones are possible / would work well on the 2600?? Some of them have already been done so I guess I am interested in the others. Which ones are favourites of yours that you would love to see on the 2600??

[NTSC Only Homebrew Game Releases]

We have always been well looked after in PAL territories with most games available in both formats. However, I have noticed that some of the recent big homebrew releases are only available in NTSC format.
 

I would like to know if there are any plans for a PAL cartridge release or if there are any PAL ROMs available for the following:

 

DK Arcade - this doesn’t look to have been released at all which is a pity as they have done an awesome job. I would love to get this on cartridge. It has been a family favourite while in isolation as it still runs okay on PAL and the girders look pretty good. It just isn’t quite the same though with Mario being pink and blue and Pauline a sickly green. Please someone tell me there is a PAL ROM available if there is no plan to release this.

A Roach in Space 

Balloon Trip - a Pal rom has been released for this so thank you for that 

Space Cactus Canyon - this is a great game that I would love to see a PAL version become available 

Spies in the Night - think this one might be okay in PAL as it is black and white

Daredevil - I really enjoy this one and it is a very well made game that looks like something released by Activision 

Evil Magician Returns II 

Robo Mechanic - this was great fun to play and feels a little like Molemania on the Gameboy. I think this one is fine as NTSC only because it still looks cool with a blue colour scheme

Robo-Ninja Climb

I am only commenting on the ROMs for those two games but they are both essential purchases. Two demos have been released for Zookeeper and it is already superb, who knows how good it will be when officially released?

Video Olympics is great if you select two or four player soccer or ice hockey. Medieval Mayhem and Ice Hockey are also good picks!! I have been playing lots of score chasers where you swap controllers often as well.

I am ashamed to say that my Atari collected dust for over 20 years and I didn’t think I would go back to it. That was until I discovered this scene and got hold of the best games that I never had as a kid and the amazing new homebrew releases. We are currently self isolating with the rest of the world and are really enjoying competing for hi-scores as a family in the same room like it was 1982. I would never dreamed the Atari would become the premier arcade machine in my household. I will list the arcade games we are enjoying but my question is, what next? Which well-loved favourites have not been ported that would be good choices for the Atari 2600?? My first choice would have been Zookeeper but Champs Games are doing an amazing job with that and it is providing endless fun. I can’t put a measure on how thankful we have been able to enjoy the following:

 

 

Pacman 8k - superb and can’t wait for it to release 

Donkey Kong VCS - looks great and plays really well, like having the cabinet in your own home, the opening is up there for best animation

Space Invaders - enough said

Aardvark - love this game and a great surprise I was only vaguely aware of the original, perfectly suited to the Atari

Galaga - an outstanding achievement that just sparks so many nostalgic, happy memories, play this with a sense of disbelief that it is real and actually happening

Zookeeper - I would like to know if the original cabinet even made it to Australia as I never saw. Discovered it on a PS2 compilation and it became my favourite arcade game of all time. Then Champ Games brought it to Atari and it is just ‘Wow!!!’ Plays just as well as the one on PS2 - love it!!

Mappy. - Another game where I never played the original. First experienced it on the Wii and thought it was okay. Fell in love with the Atari 2600 port as I improved my skills. It is incredibly satisfying when you take out a whole heap of cats with a laser beam as they follow you all in a line (similar feeling to the boulders in Dig Dug). I don’t think I ‘got’ Mappy but I do now and I learnt to appreciate it with the Atari version.

Draconian - Great arcade port with impressive graphics. It is like being the Millenium Falcon up against the Death Star trying to hit the weak point.

Frogger Official - best original arcade port along with Stargate but wish it was available on cartridge 

Space Rocks (Asteroids) - Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe all in one. Everything about this one is quality and the 2 player options are a lot of fun.

Medieval Mayhem - a raucous good time, particularly while in isolation, I rate this up with Bomberman, Towerfall and Windjammers as one of the all time classic multiplayers

Video Olympics - choose 2 or 4 player soccer or ice hockey and you can’t go wrong, anyone giving this an average review didn’t play these options

Chaotic Grill (Burgertime) - what an improvement over the original and similar levels of satisfaction to Dig Dug

Super Cobra - blows away the original as well and a great arcade experience 

Wizard of Wor - awesome multiplayer experience and the Jaws / Alien soundtrack that gets faster scared my 5 year old so he stopped playing. That is atmosphere for you!!

Scramble - another top arcade shooter that very closes matches the source material. Great challenge!!

Juno First - Great graphics and a very accurate port of a fun game. Love how much control you have

Thrust - really well made and satisfying because of the challenge, controls superbly 

Ladybug - top port that is well suited to the Atari and plays like a dream

Stargate - one of the best of the original ports

Galaxian Arcade Homebrew - the colours pop and it is just a great port and a fun game

Missile Command - has aged well and still great fun

Dig Dug - is it possible to have textured soil and rounded boulders?? Otherwise this is just as fun as it ever was. Will still be fun in a hundred years 

Centipede - Despite the square mushrooms, I still love this game

Millipede - an even more intense version

Phoenix - variety and a boss, timeless classic

Demon Attack - love that snapping graphic effect and this challenging

Joust - great multiplayer fun

Ms Pacman - great at the time and still fun but blown away by Pacman 8k, maybe it can get the same treatment

Jr Pacman - great but so hard, I struggle to beat the first level. The ghosts are like heat seeking missiles

Hack Em (Pacman) - love the speed and rhythm of this

Squish Em - a pleasant surprise and a fun game

Star Castle - solid port that is really challenging

Sea Wolf - good version of the arcade

Bump n Jump - love this original port and had a go at the original arcade for the first time a few weeks ago. It just confirmed how good this is.

Berzerk - old classic that is still a lot of fun

Solar Fox - thank you to those who recommend this on here (Atari Leaf was one of a number I think) I agree, simple to look at but a top game

Battle Zone - a fantastic interpretation of the original, love dodging 

Pengo - quite easy but really satisfying, like gold dust to get on cartridge, anyone have PAL version of this??

Kungfu Master - very impressive port

Moon Patrol - fun game but the PAL colours don’t look as good as NTSC

Tapper - a good port but not one of my fave arcade games

LEM Lander - like this one as it really rewards skill

Reactor - mixed reviews for this one but I like it

Starfire - play Star Wars on Atari!!

Pole Position - a great time but can obstacles be added and better cars?? Still a lot of fun to play 

Jungle Hunt - a decent port

Mr Do - I love Dig Dug so I like this too. Shape of the screen doesn’t work as well for this (maybe the size needs shrinking)

Mario Bros - still fun with 2 players 

 

I am thankful to be able to play such fantastic games on my Atari 2600, particularly while in isolation in 2020, a year that will always be remembered for the terrible coronavirus. Anyway, my question is, what is missing?? Who has an arcade favourite that hasn’t been ported that you think would be great on the Atari 2600?? I have heard Champ Games have Gorf in the pipeline which we all know will be great as they have set the bar so high.

 

What else would people like to see?? Be hoping for?? I am lucky as Zookeeper would have been mine but that is now here.

[DK Arcade 2600 - Playable Demo!]

This is such awesome work and I would love to get hold of it on cartridge!! I was also wondering if it would be possible to get a PAL version of the ROM release for all of us in PAL land?? I humbly bow down before you lucky people who have an NTSC copy of this fantastic game. Please help us - I am sure it would make lots of us very happy!!! The colours aren’t actually too far off but Jumpman / Mario is pink and red and Pauline is a sickly looking green. The drum with the flames is also a bit strange. It just isn’t quite the same as the incredible screenshots. I would love to play this with the family while we are in isolation. How good is the Atari 2600 right now and how would it be to travel back and release these arcade ports back in the early 80s?? The Atari 2600 really does have a very impressive arcade lineup and it is great fun playing them right now.

EDIT: OP - When you say "International Olympics" are you talking about Video Olympics or International Soccer? I figured you meant Video Olympics but your reference to soccer confuses me. Both of those games are good 2600 multiplayer games.

I haven’t been on here for a few weeks as have been busy with work. A lot of replies have since been added so sorry for the delay. There are some great suggestions which I will have to take a look at. There are some I haven’t even heard of before. I agree that California Games should go on the list. I guess you aren’t playing at the same time though but a great version of it on the Atari 2600. I also agree with Guitar Hero, Lego, Wii Sports and Fit - skiing was great, Sports Resort was a lot of fun as well come to think of it. Yep, I completely stuffed up the name calling it International Olympics. I meant Video Olympics!! The soccer and ice hockey variations are awesome 4 player fun with the paddles. I wish there was a one player version as it is multiplayer only.

Yes, I absolutely agree that Warlords is the pinnacle of multiplayer gaming on the Atari and most machines for that matter. Maybe I should have asked what games people like more than Warlords. Then Darrel Spice Jr. went and improved on what was already great with Medieval Mayhem. Medieval Mayhem I think has the best graphics on the Atari with that dragon that flies around at the start. Warlords and Medieval Mayhem are games that are also unique as they haven't really been replicated elsewhere (that I know of) because of the paddles. If Warlords has been topped, it is only fairly recently with games like Towerfall which I also really love. It had a very long reign and it is still up for debate as to whether it has been topped. Only wish I had Warlords as a kid but there were no game magazines or internet and I had no idea what the best games were that were out there. Sad to have missed this as a kid - would have been awesome!!!

[Best local multiplayer games ever]

I was just wondering what people would nominate as their favourite local multiplayer games of all time?? I guess I need to eliminate beat em ups and fighting games as there are so many (if they are genuinely your favourites put them in anyway as Streetfighter 2 is a given). We recently celebrated my son's birthday and we had 12 ten year olds around to our place to meet before they went to the movies to watch the latest Avengers film. I put on Medieval Mayhem for them and they went absolutely nuts for it. They were shouting and heckling / trash talking each other. I could hear them from down the street and the levels of excitement were very high. They also loved the 4 player soccer option of International Olympics. I think that game is underrated because it has no one player option and soccer isn't massive in the US. Finally, they loved the demo of the new Wizard of Wor. I thought about the reaction to these games on the old Atari 2600 and thought I hadn't heard such loud excitement and competitive noise before in our living room. In the car on the way home after the movie all my son's mates were talking excitedly about getting back to play that awesome game on that old video game machine. They wanted to know where they could get one. I then came to the conclusion that maybe the Atari has some of the best local multiplayer games ever.

When it comes to deciding the best multiplayer games ever, there are classics like Bomberman that have to go in there but a lot of the others I am enjoying at the moment are on the Nintendo Switch. This is definitely one of my favourite machines ever.

[Why the fascination with the 2600?]

There is definitely a nostalgia attached to it as I some great family memories from playing the Atari 2600 together. I agree with the comments about its simplicity and doing a lot with a little. They had to be creative and come up with ideas for games that were just fun. They never lost sight of the fact that having fun was the most important thing and therefore these games are just timeless (well, the good ones). I loved my Commodore Amiga as well (and it also had some great games) but there were some games on there where they got distracted by the graphics and making the game look good. They forgot about the gameplay and some of the games on the Amiga were like graphics demonstrations rather than games. Defender of the Crown and Shadow of the Beast stand out from memory as examples. I remember being annoyed that the C64 reviews of the same game scored higher and wondered how it could be true, but they were absolutely spot on. I think the PS1 suffered the same with games that looked good at the time but played terribly. They also had appalling full motion video. When you go back to them now, they don't look good anymore and never had the gameplay to begin with. I am also not a fan of the interactive movie style games where large periods of time pass without you doing anything or games that start with an hour long tutorial. Give me the simplicity of the Atari 2600 any day, not forgetting the amazing things that have been achieved recently on the platform.

Thank you for all the suggestions and I have enjoyed checking them out. Sure enough, although I try to keep up with things there were quality games that I had missed. I was particularly impressed with Aardvark. I have never seen the arcade but looked at some footage of it and it seems a very accurate port. It is perfectly suited to the Atari with the maze element to it but this is a very unique take as I have never played anything like it. It is incredibly tough and I died quickly a lot of times before getting past the first level but it is also addictive and I hit the reset button repeatedly to have another go. I am not sure why I missed this one as there is a lot of material written on it and it has made enormous progress through the development stages. The first shot I had was an old build and it was looking good in the early stages but fantastic now. I also enjoyed Tyre Trax which I had missed. It is good to see a game like this as you don't see many home-brews based on racing or involving bikes or cars. I also enjoyed Drive which I really should add to my original list above. I really like the original Pole Position port and think it is still a lot of fun. I just hope that one day someone has a go at improving the look of the cars and adds roadside obstacles as that is all I can see that is missing from the arcade. Then you could play a close to perfect version of Pole Position in the comfort of your home on Atari. Spies in the Night is really clever but I can only play it on Stella and not on my Atari. I am not sure if there are plans for a PAL release of this one. Avalanche looks really good as I am a fan of both Kaboom and paddle games in general. Arkyology was not on my list as it isn't a home-brew but it is a pretty exciting discovery nevertheless and I think it would have been released when originally planned. Finally, Amoeba Jump is a fun little game which is super addictive and I think my family will really enjoy. Thank you for the suggestions and also for helping me discover Zero Page Homebrew during my searches.

My apologies, I just tried your Dare Devil game and it is looking great with an addictive quality in trying to get a top score. There are plenty of games where you are dodging things as you move up the screen so it is refreshing to be moving down in this case and I like the premise. The mechanics work really well as you can speed up or slow down as required, with the wind adding further complications. I should also have added Space Game to games recently released (which I think is a Batari Basic game). I played that and enjoyed the bonuses element to it. I think it has a bit more to it than some of my favourite games such as Megamania, Phoenix and Demon Attack. I am sure that there are plenty of great games currently in progress which I am unaware of. Which other Bb games do you recommend?

There are many amazing home-brew games at the moment that i am trying to track and I was just wondering if I had missed any. I am super excited about the Wizard of Wor Arcade game. I had a go at the WIP rom with my kids and we had an absolute blast. I already was a fan of the original but this blows it away. I rate it as one of the best two player games out there on any system. It got my kids and their mates off the modern consoles. I am really impressed with Chaotic Grill as I like the Burgertime arcade but was never keen on the Atari 2600 version. I had a go of Chaotic Grill and it plays really well. Finally, I was thrilled to see that it looks like a version of Zookeeper will be released for the Atari and video footage surpasses all of my expectations of what I thought was possible. I have never seen an original cabinet of it here but play it on the PS2. The new version looks just as good so it looks like I will be switching to Atari for Zookeeper. I think I have more fun on the Atari now then back when I was a kid because the games that I have are just so much better. It is the main machine I go to for an arcade experience at home. When I was a kid I had Barnstorming, Skyjinks and Human Cannonball. The Atari Video Critic ranks all of these poorly and I think he said that Human Cannonball barely qualified as a game.

 

Anyway, here is a rundown of what I am following and I am really interested in what I am missing:

 

Fairly recently released (but still exciting!!!):

 

Mappy - an incredible port that continues to push the boundaries and redefines everyone's expectations (and a great game)
Super Cobra Arcade - an amazingly accurate arcade port that just plays so well

Draconian - a superb port with great graphics, sound and playability based on the different strategic approaches that can be taken

Assembloids - a top drawer puzzle game that all my family enjoy and always entertains the crowds if you leave it on at dinner parties

Sheep It Up!! - a fun little game that has an addictive quality

Balloon Run - looks to be a good game but no PAL version for this one either

 

Upcoming homebrew releases that I am following:

 

Wizard of Wor Arcade - looks like it will be released very soon and a must buy!!

Chaotic Grill - another arcade experience coming to the Atari, correcting the original version which really wasn't a lot of fun to play and looked terrible

Zookeeper - early days but game footage already looks great and all the levels seem to be in place

Frantic - Spiceware is working on this so we know it will be great and another quality homebrew release

Pacman 8k - this looks ready for release and I would really love to get it on cartridge. The 4k version I own is already good but this surpasses it and is a favourite version of Pacman for me on any system. I definitely think it has more character than the old NES version and I like it equally to the arcade. Will it ever be available to buy?

Donkey Kong VCS - another one I am looking out for the release as it is fantastic and looked to be completed

Donkey Kong Arcade - would love to see this released on a cartridge. Looks really good with only some work needed on the jumping mechanic for the elevator level to be a very accurate port

A Better Mario Bros - the graphical upgrade on this looked fantastic but I haven't heard anything about it in a while

Circus Atariage - like a lot of others, I love Circus Atari but it would benefit from some graphical improvements. This looked pretty much done except the clowns needed to bounce off the balloons a little more rather than just going through them. Anyway, it looked super impressive but I haven't heard anything.

Rally X - this looks another fantastic port on the Atari but has been quiet for a while. I enjoy the rom but would love to see a PAL cartridge release. I think they were working on the smoke that comes out the back of the car as it was just blocks initially.

 

These are the games I am interested in, along with the many great homebrew games that have already been released over the years in a list that is lengthening rapidly. I was wondering everyone's thoughts were and if there are any games coming up that I have missed that are looking good and there is growing anticipation for.
