  1. im kind of just cruising along- without putting too fine a point on it, im improving my island now so a certain *someone* can do *something* on my island.

i imagine it will take me a while to get where i need for that since i'm a slacker and there's shells to collect and trees to beat. ;)

This is probably old news, but I was looking at Gamestop's Wikipedia, and I found out Reggie is now one of Gamestop's board of directors as of March 2020.

In March 2020, four members of GameStop's Board of Directors - Dan DeMatteo, Gerald Szczepanski, Larry Zilavy, and Steve Koonin - stepped down and were replaced by Reggie Fils-Aimé, Bill Simon and J.K. Symancyk as part of the company's effort to turn around the business.[74]

I'm like that with it, the whatever attitude, short of a restart.  I see these people doing this crazy farming techniques spending like 4 hours a day on it, and I'm like, what's wrong with you??   I tried one tech a bit, problem was the island was good, but got a poor tarantula generator.  I was able to strip it well, so I got quite a few big atlas moths and a few other things I didn't have before to the museum with the spares racking up nearly 30k in like a half hour.  The flight I did before was a wash, it ended up being the rare central bell rock island thing and there's like 50k out there so that paid out well.  So in the end I made about 90k, put like 4 new things in the museum too, and did the usual rounds so it was nice.  Sure I'd love to farm for 2hours or 3 and get a million bells, but it seems like a waste to blow through the game that fast.

of course, everyone's idea of 'fun' will vary, but if the game just feels like a second job to me, that's not fun for me.  :)

i've seen similar stuff, or folks going bonkers looking for the 'right' island to sell their turnips on.  i commented to one of my coworkers that after you earn like 3 million bells, what really is there to do? lol

This past week got off to a fairly normal start. I continued my second play through of Alien: Isolation for the year, had a nice evening playing Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar on the Genesis with the misses and swapping the controller back and forth between levels until we beat it, and then... then I got Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Switch. Just like when I got Animal Crossing on the DS and 3DS, I feel like it's pretty safe to say that this game will now become the totality of my existence for the foreseeable future.

Outside of the Animal Crossing madness I did spend a little time playing Castlevania via emulation on my phone to test out a gameplay and audio recording setup I'm working on, which had a few hiccups but I think I can iron them out and start doing Let's Play videos of some of my favorite retro games as a little side hobby fairly soon. That about covers it for this week though, so here's my household's times!

I'm more interested in the new and unique one. Ones like Joe and Mac and have been released plenty of times.

Funny thing about Lode Runner is there is a pretty decent looking version "Legacy" on Steam I have on my wish list. I haven't bought it yet, but I'm mainly interested in the create a level feature to mess around with. Be neat to see something similar on Amico and seems to have decent reviews. Lode Runner Legacy

I have Lode Runner Legacy on the Switch- if it plays on the PC like it does there, it's a pretty darn good version of the game.  It being packaged with the original levels doesn't hurt. ;)

im gonna take this one a step further since compilations are all the rage- Fallout 3 / Fallout: New Vegas combo pack.  :)

even though it's been released a billion different times, i still wanna see Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross, FF4, FF6, and FF: Tactics (PS1) released on the Switch.

I need to check out the time tracker one. It is always fun to hear about what others are playing.

    Modern - https://atariage.com/forums/topic/300211-what-have-you-actually-played-tracker-modern-edition-2020/

    Classic - https://atariage.com/forums/topic/300232-what-have-you-actually-played-tracker-for-2020-season-13/

@carlsson does a bang-up job tracking the stats for all us weirdos.  Times don't have to be scientific-precise, but close is good.  :)  You'd enjoy participating, I think!

I usually do a write-up on the stuff I play, depending on the week and how pressed for time/stressed out at life I am.

  8. It feels like now I have a second job... to Tom Nook.  ;)  Here's my times for the week:

    Switch:

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 2754 minutes

    Bubble Bobble 4 Friends - 376 minutes

Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! - 483 minutes

So the elephant in the room is obviously Animal Crossing- what the heck is up with all that time?!?  Wellllll....  This game is a great distraction for me over the last few weeks; I can go into my game, bum around, harass a villager or two, fish, pay down some more money to the Nook-man.  It's easy for me as well to play inbetween tasks at work (though they are many, ha).  I think Animal Crossing in part is helping me keep what sanity I have left with all that's going on.

Going in the fine tradition of games that are named goofy, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends has so far been a fun game.  Taito stayed really close to the fundamental Bubble Bobble format I felt like, and the some of the levels were kind of hard for me- I was a little embarrassed when they game helpfully offered to continue on a boss with Invulnerability enabled.  😪  Again, this game hits all the notes that make a game fun for me- tight controls, great visuals, snappy music.  The added bonus is that they have a port of the arcade Bubble Bobble as well.  I'm on the fence whether or not it's worth $40 US, but I think that I'll get my money's worth out of the game.

I got annoyed with my progress in Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon so started it the heck over.  I've found with this particular dungeon-crawler that it is super super grindy and that it really wants to guide you towards a certain playstyle to be successful in the levels- I kind of disagree with this philosophy a bit, but I'm plugging through because dammit, im going to finish the game.

    Xbox One:

    Borderlands 3 -- 453 minutes

Dribs and drabs on Borderlands 3.  I'm looking forward to purchasing (again) the games on the Switch.

The Rev K boards came in today, and the parts were in last Wednesday.  It is too late tonight, but I'll probably build one tomorrow and see if I fixed anything.  I'm also working on moving my website, CodeHackCreate is migrating to dnotq.io.  The new site it up but not done.  I'm trying to make it more useful and easier to maintain and update, so hopefully that means I'll have more information and docs up there eventually.

    Anyway, as always, some photos:

  11. I was just thinking about Microsurgeon- this game scared the willies out of me when I was but a tiny Pooka.

    Microsurgeon TI-99/4A Game over

Neat shooter, and the 994A gave some neat speech/sounds.  I think this was one of Imagic's more imaginative games- heaven knows it was better than the 994A cart port of Demon Attack.

I played some Bad Dudes VS. Dragon Ninja, from Data East. This is an early beat-em-up, but honestly, it's kind of terrible. I think I put a few quarters into this machine way way back. It's not much of an evolution from Kung Fu Master and Vigilante. The fighting is on a straight 2D plane, making your movements very restricted. The big difference is that there is usually an upper and lower platform to do combat, similar to Shinobi or Rolling Thunder.

The selection of moves to perform are few. Meanwhile, every enemy, other than bosses, will die with one hit. This combination makes for a particularly boring game. One-hit kills really defeats the purpose of beating people up. I only played 2 levels of this the other day, and the only positive I came away with was fighting against Karnov as the level 1 boss. A couple of gamers could have some quick fun with this as a 2-player game, if they wanted to waste 15-20 minutes. They'd be begging for it to end before that time is up I'll bet.

My wife and I always laugh about this game because of the movie 'Parenthood':

"Well they're bad dudes- that's why they call the game 'Bad Dudes'."  hehehehe

  13. i think it's neat that there's not really any one way to play Animal Crossing, sort of like Stardew Valley.

Something my wife likes to do is 'rerolling' her islands to see the different villagers, fruit, landscape, etc, just to see what's different.  She'll play a bit, go 'eh', then start a new one.  :)  She does this in Stardew Valley, too.  If she gets far enough in the island usually she'll pop over to mine in Local Play, drop off her stuff for later, then move on.  Digital nomad!

she feels bad in a way that she never 'progresses', but i always encourage her to play the way that SHE wants.  if she gets enjoyment out of rerolling islands/farms/etc, i think that's FANTASTIC.

There's some pretty cool stuff!  :) Some of my favorite threads are the game time tracker/'what are you playing'/'what did you finish' ones; it's neat to me to see what other folks are playing.

i also found some neat youtube channels like the 'Battle of the Ports' one that i try to check.

I'm fine with creating an Amico-specific subforum if people feel there would be enough traffic to warrant it.  Where are people thinking this forum would slot in?  A subforum of the Intellivision forum or somewhere else?

    +1 for Modern Gaming subforum.
