yes, using altirra is probably most user friendly, load rom/bin via "Attach Cartridge", find the type that works and then save it as .car via "Save Firmware->Save Cartridge"

one should use car files instead of bin/rom since they contain cart type in the header (in this case it's a kind of a bug since apparently the smallest rom i had was 8kb so there's no type forcing for 4kb/2kb files, i'll fix that)
try using attached car, if that doesn't work, i'll look into that

now that I have the special AVG SIO-cables (two selfmade ones and a much better looking one from Mr. Robot), I would like to try its function with some ATR images that do require RAM under the OS...
Looks like firmware 019 does not recognize the SIO cable nor support such ATR images that require RAM under the OS ?!? (Or I am doing something wrong and/or must delete OSXEX first or whatever...)
Where can I find the firmware 020 (no matter if alpha, beta, etc.) and do some beta-testing...? I also have a few .CAS files here, but prefer the much faster CSIM versions running from disk/ATR (afaik, no turbo tape can reach 19,200 Baud). But I am not using any ATX images...
i've sent you an invitation yesterday, you need to accept it

1 hour ago, R.Cade said:OK, I did something stupid. I got an SIO add-on cable, but did not read closely how to connect it.
It fits, so I connected it to the JTAG port. Plugged that into the SIO port, then powered up the Atari. It didn't boot.
I removed the cable, and now the Atari boots, but the AVGCART now appears to be lifeless. The Atari doesn't see that it's installed.
Can it be reflashed from the Atari? Through that JTAG port? Or... did I just fry it? Nothing appears burned or smells burned.
unfortunately my guess is that it's dead (it shorted 3.3v rail (which shouldn't be a problem) and put 5V on jtag pins (which could be a problem))
if you have a DMM, measure resistances on that jtag connector (on the solder side (top side with AVGCART label), black probe on the rightmost pin (ground) and measure against the remaining 5 pins), i can compare it with a healthy one (it's non-conclusive but there's not much that can be done remotely at this point)
i'd be very surprised if reflashing would help since flash is a separate chip

i hexedited the s2dx3.car to change config.sys (in my usual "i have no idea what i'm doing but let's try and see" fashion), it now seems to load fdisk on stock 64kb but i haven't tried to go through the whole partitioning procedure
let me know whether that works and also don't use it for anything else but running fdisk (on stock machines)

you don't need to load side.sys, that's being loaded on sdx startup
your current issue is that 64kb is not enough for sdx+fdisk and i'm not sure whether there's a solution for that

20 minutes ago, Mr Robot said:I enabled cart mode more as a double safety measure than anything, I was booting, hitting the right button and then reset to get to the cart menu and running sdx so enabling/disabling/enabling again. it was unnecessary but it made sure ide mode was enabled. SDX couldn't see the fdisk.com on the disk because its fat32 but fdisk isn't on car: either. Running the s2loader (boot->right button->reset->s2loader->fdisk.com) or (boot->right button->reset->s2sdx->"car"->fdisk.com) both of which were enabling ide mode when launched, whether I'd enabled it with shift+ctrl+s or not, allowed me to see the disk and launch fdisk but fdisk then says it couldn't see the apt device. not apt partition, apt device. on the XEL if I run fdisk I can see the CF device even if it contains only a fat32 partition, if i wanted I could then initialise the CF device to create the apt partition, on the AVG it's saying no device at all. I think maybe @flashjazzcat is disabling fdisk from performing any actions on the device it's run from or something like that.
i just downloaded latest s2sdx3.car from fjc's site and fdisk seems to be included on CAR:
running fdisk from s2loader3.car doesn't work because it most likely uses some api to enumerate devices that is provided by sdx (just a speculation, fjc will clarify)
-
1. shift-ctrl-s enables automatic side mode on powerup (basically equivalent to holding right button), its only use is if you have u1mb installed and you prefer to boot to internal sdx or autorun side loader (from u1mb) instead of going to avgcart menu
in this scenario, don't use it, just run s2sdx.car, it will enable side emulation automatically
2. sdx supports only fat16 partitions so if you plan to run anything from sd card (e.g. fdisk, via side emulation), use that

well, with this amount of information it's pretty hard to diagnose the issue
there seems to be a problem with either command or data out line (or both)

nice
i also received similar/same cable braids from china few days ago but didn't have time to try how would that work, seems fine

in some way it's refreshing for a change to read complaints about delivery times for items NOT shipped by me

it can both read and write from/to atr, it's basically same thing as any other sio2* device
it's also possible to do that without the mod, just the compatibility is limited because the software in use can't disable/overwrite patched OS that is being softloaded into RAM under ROM (or use custom sio routines)

briefly tested on avgcart (with sio mod), this version seems to work

i got it almost working, i can play the pong, just right at the end it tells me to rewind the tape 3 rotations back so there's still something not exactly right in my emulation
i need some shorter cas for testing, this one takes too long to load
-
here's Timeslip cas with that pong loader
unfortunately it doesn't seem to currently load via avgcart, i thought i had it working so i either broke it at some point or i remembered wrong
i'll put it on my todo list
-
hardware-wise there shouldn't be a problem with avgcart sio mod on the sio bus with other proper sio devices (untested though)
when it comes to "non-proper" sio devices (like sdrive-max without that extra circuitry), i wouldn't plug them together with any other devices not just avgcart
avgcart ignores requests for drives that don't have an image assigned so it should coexist with other devices just fine (assigning and cycling the images needs some work though, it's on my todo list for final 0020)

there is a beta firmware that has some preliminary support for sio mod (atr, atx, cas), so if you got the mod done, just let me know (and don't forget to share a photo!)
-
i don't mind people doing the mod this way, the only issue is that marauder was seeing a behavior for which the easiest explanation would be noise being picked up due to those wires being run over the pcb (ok, yours are routed a bit differently but still)
i don't know if that's plausible, i still hope i'll find a better explanation but you have been warned

(the one with the large cutout is slightly narrower but i doubt it'd fit 1200xl, if anyone has 1200xl and 3d printer, just print either top or bottom, try and let me know)
apparently the narrower one fits 1200xl (thanks to rEVERz for testing and the photo)

that should work but only via sio mod (otherwise translator would kill the patched os needed for standard atr emulation)

i don't think it's here, probably stuck somewhere else, maybe austria (i think majority of airmail from here goes through there), unfortunately there's never a tracking info after it leaves slovakia and before it's scanned in the destination country (and i've also seen royal mail not scanning stuff at all a few times, basically downgrading it to unregistered and untracked although they always delivered so far)
-
just fyi, i'm currently unable to ship to usa and canada (and some other countries, mostly overseas, allowed countries are here) since our postal service stopped (again) accepting mail to these destinations (due to insufficient transport capacities being available since most flights are down due to pandemic)
you can still pm me and i'll put you on the list but that's maximum i can do these days

thanks to @Xuel, you can now play PDM files directly from the cart browser without having to run side loader cart first and then pdm player for side
copy PDMPLAY from this zip into the root of your SD card and you should be able to directly run PDM files (you need firmware 0016 or higher)
(ESC to quit, SPACE/RETURN for settings)
