  1. The PS3 has multiple issues. First was that it was simply overpriced when it debuted. No system priced over $300 at launched has been sucessful (the 360 had the core model at $300 at launch). Second was that the early marketing for it was horrible and turned people off, especially with the 360 and Wii right there with lower price points. Third was that it simply lacks AAA exclusive titles when compared to the PS1, PS2, 360, and Wii. Fourth is that the PSN just isn't that great given the download times with manditory downloads and security breaches. Fifth is that the hardware is a pain to program for compared to the 360 and Wii. Sixth is that right now Sony lacks the deep pockets that MS and Nintendo has right now. Seventh is the constant hardware redesigns, it's created a lot of confusion in the marketplace. All this stuff combined means it's no wonder that the PS3 is the 3rd place console.
  2. I guess we won't see a PS4 anytime soon since thye can't afford to take a massive loss on a new console, espeically given how the PS Vita has been bombing and even being outsold by the PSP in Japan.
  3. Sony has been bleeding money in the last few years so anything is possible, more likely they'd be bought out by some other big company.
  4. How many retailers are going to stock download-only consoles? Places like Target, Walmart, and Gamestop make their money off of game and accessory sales not console sales so there would be less incentive to stock them. Yeah sure some places will carry it but it won't be as advertised or a priority for the retailers. Plus hasn't the industry learned anything from the bomb that was the PSP Go?
  5. Nintendo-published games usually fetch a premium because of their reputation for well-made games and high demand for those games. But still I never thought I'd see the day where Virtual Console prices seemed like a bargin.
  6. I just found my old 2600 Jr console but it was missing the power and video cords. I was just wondering if it took the same cords as the other 2600s or if it took its own special cords. Thanks in advance.
  7. Plus if you own the hardware it makes it easier to develop games for it since in theory you should know the ins-and-outs of the system. By porting games to multiple systems instead you may not be taking full advantage of the hardware. That's why Nintendo-published games are almost always better on Nintendo systems than third party games (and one reason why 3rd parties don't put their AAA titles on Nintendo systems for the most part).
  8. The DS was a bit of a slow burner, it really didn't get popular until the DS Lite came out. I think Nintendo dropped the ball a bit by making Pokemon Black and White DS titles instead of 3DS titles, that would have been the killer ap that would have moved 3DSs off the shelf.
  9. http://shoryuken.com/2012/03/07/more-street-fighter-x-tekken-quick-combos-coming-possibly-as-dlc/ Now Capcom might be selling combos as DLC, seriously fuck this company.
  10. It's a combination of greed and stupidity. People just aren't researching the market, are blindly using ePay as a guide, and thinking they can get a lot for it just because it's old. People who know the market (like us on AA) are usually smart enough to wait for a good deal and pass on the bad ones.
  11. Can't wait until special moves are DLC. At least Mortal Kombat got it kinda right, recently releasing a Greatest Hits collection with all the DLC characters and extras like the original MK movie and soundtrack. I don't know if the DLC characters are on disc though.
  12. This is an odd franchise to revisit, considering it came out 28 years ago and it wasn't that great of a game to begin with in my eyes. And truthfully I don't really know what direction to take this game considering none of its extremely dated mechanics would translate well to today's audience
  13. Given how most people trade in their old cars to bring down the cost of their new cars it's safe to say it would significantly drop new car sales. People would hold on to their old cars even longer. At the end of the day trying to get rid of the used game market is the game industry is being shortsighted and basically cutting off the hand to spite the thumb.
  14. Maybe not a crash but there will be a shake-up in the industry sooner rather than later. Development costs are getting higher and higher, especially with the next gen looming in a couple of years, and we're already at the point where a game has to be a superblockbuster just to break even. It's getting to the point where middle-tier developers will have to make a choice: go all in with the superblockbusters or develop cheap casual games and stick with the handhelds. Meanwhile the big companies will take fewer and fewer chances and just take the safe route because of the high costs.
  15. Not to mention that the sale of used games often goes to fund the purchase of new games. A 13 year old kid without a job is going to have a hard time keeping up without the ability to trade in games.
  16. That's okay, I still have my PSP and games for it are dirt cheap right now. And chances are that it'll be hacked by the time I might consider buying a Vita.
  17. The difference is that in the 70s, 80s, and 90s the costs were mostly due to cart costs and packaging costs, nowadays costs are due to marketing, insanely high development costs, celebrity voiceovers, CEO salaries, etc. We gamers shouldn't be punished because game companies don't know how to keep a reasonable budget. Not to sound overdramatic but I really do see another crash or at least mini-crash happening soon. Game development budgets are getting unsubstainable and gaming companies are becoming increasing anti-consumer in an era of increasingly cheaper entertainment.
  18. And that's why game companies shouldn't charging $60 (plus DLC, online passes, etc) for their games. And quite frankly the game companies need to understand that there's cheaper forms of entertainment than many people will go to instead if things get too expensive, especially if it's mon and dad buying or some minimum wage making 16-25 year old buying. I remember being in my early 20s and picking the PS1 over the N64 and one of the main reasons because was the costs of the games. Hell I couldn't afford to keep up with gaming today if it wasn't for used gaming because I have other monetary priorities. Say what you want about the movie and music industries but at least their product is fairly affordable and doesn't require a huge upfront investment to enjoy unlike consoles (especially with next gen consoles probably being $400+)
  19. I might getting a Wii-U by default if MS and Sony are going to do some of these rumored ideas.
  20. At $40 I think I'll pass, though it would be normally $80 to download them all (not counting DotW and other sales). Maybe I'll get it if it goes on sale.
  21. I though the game division was Sony's only profitable division. But I don't know how much longer Sony can absorb these losses since it's now 4 years in a row. At least Nintendo had years of massive profits before finally having a bad year.
  22. Nintendo got lazy in 2011. They barely supported the Wii outside of LoZ, really didn't support the DS that much (though understandable), and the 3DS didn't do as well as expected and really didn't have too much come out for it other than Super Mario 3DS and Mario Kart 7.
  23. To be honest the 7800's launch line-up was pretty dated, ports of those games (or similar games) were widely available on other systems, and the market was transitioning from the 'bringing home the arcade' experience to more of a 'extended home adventure' experience at that time. Yes the article wasn't researched as well as it could have been but honestly it was a filler article at the end of the magazine so you couldn't expect too much. The only reason GI has the number of readers that is has is because of its relationship with Gamestop, not because it's a good magazine so take everything they say with a grain of salt.
  24. Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question but I was wondering if there were any reliable clone systems for the 2600 besides a modded Flashback 2. I've seen tons of clone NES, SNES, Genesis, and even Turbographix 16 systems and legality shouldn't be an issue since patents expire after 20 years.
