  1. If you didn't already know, the Retro Programming - Vectrex Academy 2021 course offered by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Peer Johannsen through Pforzheim University (Hochschule Pforzheim) is well underway. Some students have posted work that could benefit from testing and your feedback.

Below is the comment posted on by Peer on Vector Forums along with the link to the 2021 project gallery page. Make all replies to either the direct reply email link available on each project page, or by "Vectrex Academy 2021" post thread on Vector Forums.

    "Greetings everyone,

here are the latest news of the Vectrex Academy 2021:

All the projects are on track. Some have already reached what I would call a very early alpha status, which is quite amazing considering the fact that, just 7 weeks ago, none of the students had even heard of a Vectrex before. Two of the students are brave enough to have their alpha candidates already put out to the public for some very early alpha testing :)

Alpha test binaries of projects "Frog Jump" and "Racetrex" are available for download by means of the gallery page. There are also links on the project pages for playing the games in Dr. Snuggles' online emulator in your web browser.

It would be really really great if some of you guys out there find the time to take a look and try these games and voice your opinions and some early feedback here on the forum. This would be quite rewarding for the students and a great help for them while continuing their work on the projects.

    Many Cheers,
    Peer"

Thank you. 👍 I was able to remove the old glue plugging my the actuator stem and screw in my reset button.

Cool.  Did you also make a video of the removal process?  Or take pics?

How did you remove the old screw thread and material?

My Vectrex is missing the reset button. It has a white plastic post where I assumed a nice button attached. I ordered a new button, but it does not fit on the post, it looks like the post is supposed to have a hollow center.

Pressing the post resets the Vectrex, so the actual switch seems fine. Do I have a stock part, how is it supposed to look?

The Reset button actuator stem is hollow and threaded.  On your Vectrex the screw from the reset button appears to be broken off from the button and still inside the actuator.

Here are links to my YouTube and Google album videos on Vectrex control know an button removal.  As well as what the look like when removed.

As much as this could be a very intriguing project, I personally think that one of the highlights of the Vectrex is the true vector-based graphics.  Using LCD/LED would take away most of the magic and turn it into a basic "emulation" type of unit.

    Exactly.

This also happened to me when ordering, no confirmation of sale or shipping.

Then the package showed up.. Shipping was quick and packed great.

I still need to order the 3D Viewer form them, if anyone has one I would love to see a review.

For functionality and fit I think the Madtronix Vectrex 3D Imager is better than the original.

    Overall fit is better.

    Visibility is better.

All game color wheels (disc) are included with the Madtronix 3D Imager.

The point some my have a problem with is the spinning disc is exposed. The wind the disc generates might bother some people. Either immediately, or after playing for a while. However, I never find it to be a problem.

Another potentially big plus for the Madtronix Vectrex 3D Imager is the fact the color wheel is much easier to make/replicate than the original GCE color wheels. This lends itself to homebrew replication. And also making other color wheels if different color layouts. And wholly different colors. Great for new 3D games that might use different layouts.

220 to 240 volts in the EU.  I wouldn't call the Vectrex modern today. If that Zendure Passport can step up the voltage from 110 to 220 then 👍

Most wall wart power convertors are not suitable for Vectrex, or other old electronics, uses.

You will want to stay with a sine wave type of power converter. In the USA or Canada that would be an external Step-Up or Step-Down power transformer when used a foreign (UK / Euro / Nordic / Japan) Vectrex.

    Something similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-voltage-converter-Transformer-Charging/dp/B00EEJZQ5W/ref=sr_1_5

Or you could also use a Double-Conversion, Pure Sine Wave, UPS. More expensive.

The Vectrex needs at least 40 Watts of power. Really, it does better with 55 to 60 Watts.

When determining a Step-Up/Down transformer to use I suggest one that can supply at least 75 to 100 Watts continuous.

From the various region Vectrex rear panel labels.

GCE Vectrex USA Voltage : 120 VAC

MB - GCE Vectrex, Canadian Voltage : 120VAC

MB Vectrex UK Voltage : 240VAC

MB Vectrex Australia Voltage : 240VAC

MB Vectrex Euro (France) Voltage : 220 VAC

MB Vectrex Euro (Germany) Voltage : 220 VAC

MB Vectrex Euro (Netherlands) Voltage : 220 VAC

MB Vectrex Euro (Spain) Voltage : 220 VAC

MB Vectrex Euro (Italy) Voltage : 220 VAC

MB Vectrex Euro (Sweden) Voltage : 220 VAC

MB Vectrex Euro (Finland) Voltage : 220 VAC

Bandai Vectrex, JAPAN Voltage : 100VAC

  11. In the Facebook group Vectrex fans unite!, a group member named Ralf Kornmann has released a Vectrex port of the classic game "Oregon Trail".

This port is a text only so far. No sound. No mini game. Ralf's port of Oregon Trail is improving and is up to version version 1.0.1 so far. Looking forward to future improvements. Fun nostalgic game play.
