IF you had an Acorn Archimedes/Risc-PC back in the day or if you are curious about RiscOS there is a brand new Kickstarter campaign here.

Of course you can just get a Raspberry Pi and get stuck in yourself but it's nice to see an active campaign going and I hope it's a success.

Looks like a very interesting project.  While it is not something that necessarily interests me, I do wish them luck as it does look pretty neat.

Lorraine was being worked on since 82/83, the ST was supposedly thrown together in 5 months.  The Atari 1850XLD was targeted for the Lorraine chipset, according to some documents found.  That was all pre-Tramiel, who also split Atari as he didn't want the Arcade division.  It seems to me he basically was pissed that he got kicked out of Commodore, which he built from the ground up, and bought the Atari Computer division out of Anger just to compete with whatever Commodore worked on.  I mean to be fair, he succeeded in lasting longer than Commodore with Atari (though I think Sam Tramiel took over before Atari merged with JTS).  Warner Communications sold off the computer division for dirt cheap too, and was willing to sell the arcade division for cheap as well, but he didn't want it as he wasn't interested in video games.... buy a company mostly known for games, and not want to do games.....

Yeah, still convinced he did it out of anger...

Correct.  Jack got back into the computer business in order to get back at Commodore and wasn't ready to retire quite yet.  Also, if it wasn't for the 11th hour deal struck between Amiga and Commodore, the chipset would have gone to Atari and Commodore would have (most likely) been up sh*t creek without a paddle.

I know Tommy said he's bringing homebrew games to Amico.  Some might get released individually.  But what if there were collections?  Like a volume 1, 2, etc.  That would be awesome.

I second this.  Definitely having a way to connect to the OG Intellivision's original titles and games released by homebrewers on the new platform would be a good coup imo.

    Hi guys,

This morning, we're with segaman 101. Here we see him sharing his collection of the NGPC and his thoughts of it and the game he owns in his collection. Enjoy. :)

    Anthony...

Too bad the NGPC had such a short life span.  It was really a good little handheld and it would have been nice to have seen what content they could have developed for it.  But, as Rick Blaine once said, "We will always have Paris".

Morning Atarians! Forgot to post this for you all on Tuesday when I released the video, so here it is now. This week's video is on Nightmares from Red Rat, a game that nearly fell victim to the "Satanic Panic" when several distributors refused to stock it on the grounds it might be "harmful to children". Fortunately, good old Page 6 stepped in to save the day!

Good stuff as always.  Keep up the great work.

G'day folks! Here's this week's ST video, featuring an Ocean movie license game that isn't complete bobbins... though it is based on a movie I'll be surprised if anyone remembers!

Checked it out this morning.  Seemed like a decent little puzzle-platformer.  I know the movie was a flop at the box office, but I actually kinda enjoyed it.  It was good dumb fun imo.  Regardless, take care and keep up the great work.  I recently got a new little handheld device with ST games on it, so I may try to give some a go, like Rod Land or some of the others you have covered.

Hi guys. It's good to see that people can have a proper discussion about two competing systems. At the time it was like Xbox and PS, trying to find points to out do the other team. I was firmly on team Amiga. I never considered the value for money side of things. I just wanted what looked best. I suppose the fact that the people I knew also had Amigas had an influence as it gave us common ground to talk about things and share (ahem) software.

Having never used an ST I can't comment on how easy to use the OS is. However, I never really had any trouble finding stuff in Workbench. All the prefs are grouped together in one place. However, if you are used to one way of doing things it can take a while to get used to a new way.

Glad you enjoyed that show. If you ever want to see our shows being recorded live just follow our Twitch channel (its free).

Everyone is going to have their preferences.  However, too many times people on any versus topic (whether that be 2600 vs. Intellivision, NES vs. SMS, Genesis vs. SNES) put the fanboy/fangirl hat on and don't give the other system a fair shake.  I've been there, too.  That being said, the Atari ST is a machine that was very good in its time and deserves to shine on its own merits.  Sure, it is not an Amiga, but it still was a damn good piece of hardware that a lot of people would have loved to have had back in the day, that's for sure.

Hi guys, just found your podcast and have been listening to it, fun stuff!  I did want to add to the ST/Amiga comparison podcast which I think missed a few points.  I was running a business from a C64, writing letters was such a pain, heard about the Amiga and went to downtown DC to see it and was wowed!  However, the price was too high to justify and later saw the ST, which was not only more reasonably priced, but had a better-looking video to boot for productivity.  Also, with the 1000, the disk swapping was horrendous and was a deal killer, went with the ST.  Remember, the Amiga was made to be a games machine while the ST was made to be a Mac clone, so both business and games while the 1000 was not as good productivity-wise.  I still find the Amiga OS to be half-ass compared to the ST, maybe more powerful (although finding and using that power is not easy) but not intuitive and too CLI-driven it seems.  Did eventually get a 500 (which I just bought again as well as a 1200) but for gaming only, the ST was still the machine for running my business until the internet forced me to a Mac.  Since getting back into the ST and Amiga, still finding the ST the easier machine to understand and operate, the Amiga just seems to make you need to learn a lot just to get anything done, other than WHDload.  And nice shout out on Sundog, that game is killer and a reason I recently got into retro computers, well the ST and Amiga.

The Atari ST was definitely a very good machine that deserves a lot more love than it gets nowadays.  Hopefully that will change as too often it gets overshadowed by the Amiga and/or other classic computing platforms.  However, I will say that I think the fellas did give the ST a fair shake and showed that it was a system that would have been a good machine to have back in the day as while the Amiga was (very arguably) the better overall machine, even a $200 difference between the two was a great sum of money back then.  Still, all that being said, definitely the ST deserves more credit as it was a very good machine that deserves to shine based on its own merits.

Worms Collection 1 was announced for Evercade. The 3 worms games in the collection are  Worms, Worms Armageddon and Worms Blast!.

The version of Worms Blast! Evercade will be getting is the GBA version. The version of Worms Armageddon Evercade is getting is the PS1 version. The original version of Worms is a 16 bit version.  What I know is you are able play up to 4 players on Worms Armageddon by pass and play the same Evercade system according to blaze.

It is a cart I would get, but more for collecting. I first heard of the series in the mid 1990's, but I never got into the series. I think Evercade getting this collection is a good edition for the system. Worms is a known franchise.  The cartridge is coming in May of 2021 according to Blaze.

Definitely collections like these and/or more from homebrewers will really help the Evercade grow imo.

It is Amigos time once more and this week let’s take a look at Bill's Tomato Game. You wouldn't normally associate a Tomato with a physics game but it works here!

We get two different opinions on this one, which do you agree with?

Good episode.  Definitely enjoying the wide variety of games the boys go over.  Gonna sound like a broken record here, but another game that had a lot of potential but could have been a lot better.  Still, the game does have some play-ability to it that will be someone's bag for sure.

Morning Atarians! Here's this week's ST video, featuring a game I hadn't played before but was always curious about: the totally-authentically-Japanese-honest-guv puzzler Gem'X! I had a lot of fun with this, and I'm sorry I missed out on it back in the day now!

Good video!  Really enjoying all of these great ST review videos.  Definitely this seemed like a good little puzzler.  Take care and keep up the great work.

Yeah, one way to resolve it would be to label NES & Co as 4th Gen.    I'm not sure they are enough of a technical leap to warrant that.   But it's still a better solution than lumping the '82 machines in with the '77 machines IMO

Having NES, SMS, and 7800 as the new 4th gen and bumping the Turbografx-16, Genesis, and SNES to 5th gen could work for me, too.  Also, yes, you are correct as there is a big difference between the 2600 and 5200 graphics and hardware wise, that's for sure.

  13. 1 hour ago, zzip said:

Well a hardware generation is when a manufacturer replaces an aging product with a new one.  That's exactly what the 5200 was intended to be.   Atari had the foresight in the 70s to know the VCS would be obsolete in a few years, so they began working on the Candy/Colleen projects to replace it in a few years.

Because of that I think 5200 meets the definition of "Next Gen" over the 2600, and is not a second gen console.   The 7800 is problematic in the Atari line up because it isn't a major jump.  Still runs the same CPU at same speed,  better graphics/sprites, worse sound, less RAM.   I would say both 5200 and 7800 were third gen consoles.

The NES runs the same CPU as both the 5200/7800 at the same speed, so I don't see how that's a generational leap over 5200/CV,  but those console aren't a leap over the 1976/77 consoles that could barely put graphics on the screen.

They were considered 3rd gen then,  they should be considered 3rd gen now.

Yes, I do suppose that the 5200, CV, SG-1000 (?), and Intellivision (?) could be considered 3rd gen instead of being lumped into a second tier of sorts in the 2nd gen consoles like the O2 and 2600.  That, would in turn, mean that the NES, SMS, and 7800 would be 4th gen machines, which I am fine with.  Of course, others (including those editing Wiki and other prominent (psuedo) video game historians might say otherwise.  Still, I believe there is plenty of room for debate here.  Just a matter of optics and/or hardware parameters.

  14. 23 hours ago, zzip said:

I still don't consider the 2600 and Coleco to be of the same generation.   That's a modern invention reinforced by wikipedia.   Back then we referred to Coleco/5200/ as "Third Wave" or Gen.

Very true.  The ColecoVision and 5200 were part of a 'third wave' of systems.  However, technically speaking and a bit of imo, systems like 2600 and 5200 can be considered part of the 2nd generation of consoles, though there are a lot of differences and advancements between the two.  However, I will say that Wiki lists the SG-1000 as a 3rd gen. console, whereas I think (due to fact it is a hopped up ColecoVision in most respects) it really should be considered a 2nd gen. console.  That being said, I do acknowledge there is very much room for debate on the matter.

A Mario Kart clone on the Amiga? Well, no not really but it tried. Boat and Aaron are looking at the Amiga CD32 version of Bump N Burn this week.

Mario Kart used the SNES’s mode 7, Amiga doesn’t have that so this went with a tweaked Lotus style engine, was that the right move?

A good episode.  The game definitely had some good potential, but just had some things that were not in its favor.  Still, a competent enough game in its own right.

Good morning all! Here's a freshly baked Atari ST video for you to enjoy, this time featuring the third Dizzy game: Fast Food from Codemasters, featuring a stirring soundtrack from Allister Brimble.

Good video.  BTW, have taken a deep dive into your ST game reviews.  I gotta say it is a bit of a breath of fresh air from the countless Amiga related stuff I see.  Definitely I think the ST was a good gaming platform that has been pounded into the dirt unnecessarily over time.  Also, I laughed my butt off on your Rick Dangerous video as I have gone through similar gaming experiences before.  Regarding the Zany Golf video, I had that game on the Genesis/Mega Drive.  It was a good game I thought and it is nice to revisit a time when EA wasn't soul-less as they are now as they published some really cool and interesting stuff once upon a time.  In the meantime, take care and I look forward to many more videos to come.
