What's the Worst Console You Ever Played?
Hwlngmad replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
That I am not too sure. However, I would say that the A8 and/or C64 were, in some ways, better gaming platforms than the ST. However, the ST is a pretty good games machine in its own right and could obviously do a lot of things graphically that the A8 and/or C64 could only dream of. Unfortunately the ST gets crapped on a lot unnecessarily and/or unfairly at times imo. -

Very true. The ST seems to be a forgotten and underrated gaming system. Granted, the Amiga is better than ST. But, if the ST is your jam, there is nothing wrong with it as it (seems to me anyway) that it was quite capable all things considered. -
Not sure if a main stream 5200 flashback device is really feasible considering the 5200 sold 1 million units or so. However, the original Flashback 3 proposal (see The Atari Flashback 3 Petition above) seemed a more viable proposition as it would tap into the 8-bit computer line in addition to the 5200. Now that would be a 5200-style flashback product that I think people could really get behind. Just my opinion, though.

100% agreed. The episodes are pretty fun. Also, check out ARG Presents if/when you can. That is another long running show from Amigos Retro Gaming that is a really good and fun, too.

Computers and the videogame crash of the 80's.
Hwlngmad replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
I agree 100% here. No doubt about it. I would say cheap computers killed a lot of other people's interest in consoles. Also, like you said, the games you could finds were deeper and more complex. Once computers stopped being super cheap (and just cheap in general) and consoles caught up gaming wise, then it was a quick shift back to consoles being the primary way to play games. -

I believe the 800XL was cheaper too, but I could be wrong on that. Regardless, definitely the computer price war that broke out between Commodore and TI spread and caused computers to be sold at and/or below the prices of dedicated gaming consoles that could play as good of games, if not better, than those on dedicated video game consoles. That, the glut of crap software, and lots of competing gaming systems (Atari, Coleco, Mattel, Zircon, Magnavox, Emerson, etc.) lead to the crash here in the States. Obviously, that didn't happen in Japan and/or Europe. -
Throwing my two cents in, here is how I would break it down. It goes: Graphics - C64 Sound - C64 Price - C64 Durability - Apple II Expandability - Apple II Performance - Tie (C64 and Apple II get a point) BASIC Programming - Apple II Gaming Library - C64 Business Library - Apple II Keyboard - Apple II Open-Architecture - Apple II Design / Appearance - Too subjective to rank and therefore not valid. However, I personally love the looks of the Bell and Howell Apple II+ and C64C. Totals: 5 for the C64 to 7 for the Apple II. Apple II being the overall winner. Obviously opinions may differ, but this is just how I see it if utilizing the above criteria.

Whoa! He wants that much for a RPi 3 in a Model III case?
Hwlngmad replied to Omega-TI's topic in Tandy Computers
Doing a Model II like this would be pretty cool imo. -

Agreed, the price is a bit out there. Still, the work that has been done does appear to be very impressive. -
Yes, saw this just recently. Definitely some very sad news and a big loss for the community. He will be missed very much.

R.I.P. Curt. You will be missed. Thank you for all that you did.

Sad News - Curt Vendel

Very sad news. He was very instrumental in preserving and/or discussing Atari history. Definitely a big loss to the community. Thoughts and prayers to his family. May he rest in peace. -

Yeah, this does look very cool. However, the cost is pretty eye watering all things considered. Still, if people are willing to pay for a Fairchild Channel F in not the greatest of condition for over $1k, then I guess this is not really too far off. Still, its cool and I dig it, but seems to be asking way too much money imo. -
Good episode. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, glad to see a new SD adaptor solution. Definitely something that can be user to use than a Gotek is good in my books. Take care and keep up the good work gents.

Anybody own the C64 Mini? Impressions?
Hwlngmad replied to Spike Danton's topic in Commodore 8-bit Computers
Also, if I remember correctly, THEVIC20 is a special edition version of THEC64, so it (supposedly) won't be routinely available but just for a limited time. Definitely I am looking forward to getting it here in about two months time. -
Computers and the videogame crash of the 80's.
Hwlngmad replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Most definitely 8-bit computers pricing could really go up when considering things such as floppy drive(s), monitor(s), etc. However, most people generally look at the entry price of something and more often than not do not (for a big degree) consider the additional costs associated with something. That is why when C64s, TI-99/4as and the rest were $200 or less they were flying off of the shelves as they were crazy, stupid cheap compared to what they had been just two to six years prior, which also hurt video game consoles as people saw that you could invest $200 in a computer that could do a lot more than just play games. It, in turn, produced a very difficult situation for video game consoles as the only investment a person could do with the machine was really games and not much more else unlike computers for in and around the same money. -

Hwlngmad replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Correct. From the Channel F to the CV, they are all pretty much lumped into the 2nd generation of video game consoles for the most part. If that is true, I would (personally) say the Fairchild Channel F to Arcadia 2001 would be 2a, whereas consoles like the CV and 5200 would be 2b. Just my opinion though. Additionally, I think the SG-1000 is really a 2nd generation console as it pretty much is a supercharged CV, but it seems it is mostly labeled as a Gen 3 console. -

Very true. Also, computer prices jumped way up with the introduction of 16- and/or 32-bit machines compared to what 8-bit machines could be had for. That really helped video game consoles like the NES, Genesis, etc. come back in a big way imo. -

Hwlngmad replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
100% agreed. As cliche as this is going to sound, I am writing a book and one of things I am mentioning in the book is how popular home computers like the C64, Vic-20, Apple II, CoCo 2, and Atari 8-bits became due to how cheap they were and how they (pretty much) trumped what any dedicated gaming console could do (to some but not all degrees). -

True, I think adults tend to get a Chromebook, fully realize what it is and is not, and go back to something else. However, our Chromebook is for our son, which is good for him thus far as he is still in Elementary school. -

Hwlngmad replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Computers had a very big impact on the Video Game Crash of 1983. The reason being is that so many computers (such as the TI-99/4a, Vic-20, C64, Atari 800 and 600XL, and CoCo 2) had all come down to the price in and around video game console prices. Also, games on computers such as the C64 or Atari 800XL were as good if not better than the console equivalents. It caused a lot of overlap gaming wise between the two causing even more of glut of video games that were already being experienced on just video game consoles alone. Long term wise, the computer platforms that have had the biggest impact computing wise are the PC and Mac. No doubt about it. Also, within the last decade, Chromebooks have also become a force (of sorts) in the U.S. as they have really put a dent on tablets since you can have a basic computer with a keyboard and years of updates over a tablet that may cost about the same with and/or without accessories. Just my thoughts as there have been some really good discussions. I look forward to seeing more 😀 -
In my opinion, here are my choices. They are: 1970s - 2600 1980s - NES 1990s - PS1 or Sega Genesis 2000s - PS2 or Xbox 360 2010s - PS4 2020s - TBD, but right now the Switch is the hottest thing going console wise. Again, just my opinion, but I think they are pretty reasonable picks all things considering.

Hey, thanks for the information. I very much appreciate it.

Considering the age of this thread, I would imagine that this project has been dropped. However, considering the success of the 2nd ZX Spectrum Next Kickstarter run, the expansion of THEC64 with a mini and full-size (with THEVIC20 coming out soon, which I pre-ordered), perhaps this product has a little more merit now. But, again, considering the amount of emulation options out there, not sure how much a product like this is really needed.

Modern day screen mods are awesome and fix a lot of viewing ills from handhelds of days gone by.
