  1. It's quite possible, but rumors of an N64 Mini have been ongoing for some time. This is quite possibly the N64 Mini, although time will tell.

Well, there are some games that don't emulate well. Doom 64 is one of them, Rogue Squadron another.

It's also possible Nintendo is re-asserting its trademarks so they don't expire or get snatched by someone else, like we saw with Sega's ZAXXON.

  2. Pretty much. The CD-i, CDTV, and the CD-ROM format in general was an interesting time period that a lot of people thought would be the future. To some (minor) degree, they were right. However, other technologies and advancements quickly put it in its place. For a time though, those machines were quite fascinating and serve as a interesting footnote in history.

And the DVD was revealed and sold in Japan in late 1995, to plant a final nail in the coffin.

  3. Agree. The initial price of the CD-i was very off putting. While it had a lot of capability, by the time the price of the machine came down as well as the refocused marketing push, it was too little too late as by then the PS1 was already released (if I am not mistaken) by then as well as reduced prices on the Genesis and SNES (hench better gaming options) and on other electronic equipment like VHS and/or CD players.

The main problems of the CDI IMHO were the outrageous price tag for the full system and the weak marketing by Philips of both the video playback capabilities and the gaming qualities (most decent games came out very late in the CDI's lifecycle since Philips initially didn't bother at all and focused on edutainment software instead). It didn't exactly help that owning pre-recorded VHS tapes was not quite "the thing" as it was with CDs and (much later) DVDs, at least most of my VHS stuff was recorded from TV or rented.

  4. The CD-I was a concept that came many years too early. It was supposed to be an all-in-one multi-media device that really did not have the horsepower and technology to accomplish what it set out to do. I remember how the CD-I, and really the CD-ROM format seemed to be the way of the future (my parents were blown away by my TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM capabilities). However, as we see today, devices like smartphones and my Nvidia Shield TV have (more-or-less accomplished) what these early machines have set out to do. Ironically at the same and/or below price point ($699 when it first came out if I am not mistaken).

  5. Quantity. Quality is definitely there. I play Real Racing 3 and like it a lot. Not quite Forza Motorsport level, but it gets the job done. I haven't tried the enhanced versions of Doom et al, but they look really good. Still, I got the Nvidia Shield TV to eventually turn it into my mainstream retro console. I haven't gotten around to that yet, but it is definitely on my to-do list.

When you say "level of games," do you mean quality or quantity? I had an Nvidia Shield (the portable that looked like an OG Xbox controller) and it had a really robust tool for mapping touchscreen actions to the controller.

Android TV is going to be limited to software with controller support. That's on the developers, not the platform. AppleTV has the same problem. What's there is great, but there's a lot less of it.

Does your Nvidia Shield TV have the enhanced, Shield-only games like Half-Life 2, Portal, Doom3, etc?

  6. I think that the support is (potentially) there, but the biggest problem I have with my Nvidia Shield TV is that Android TV does not have the same level of games that can be found in (celluar) Android devices. If it did, I would have zero complaints. Still, I am interested to see if this company can do what they are planning and how it truly compares to the Nintendo Switch and/or Nvidia Shield. Shoot, the Nintendo Switch is (in some ways) the sequel to the Nvidia Shield. Time will tell, but the chances that this takes off are pretty limited.

Sounds a lot like the Nvidia Shield, which has been a handheld, a TVbox, and a tablet .... and a modified version was made into the Nintendo Switch. Makes sense for someone to revisit the concept (Shield is/was cool) but this would have to do something pretty special to light a spark where so many others have failed to take off in a big way.

Or maybe being in a little niche is OK, so long as it's supported?

  7. Considering the joke that is the Atari VCS at this point, I think this thread is a pretty actual reflection of the situation surrounding it. Just my two cents.

Tacos, burgers, cars, new world politics...

Just how far off topic does a thread have to be before it gets locked on AA?

  8. I'd like one, but I need to know price, performance, and game list before I'd commit or not. That's the only right thing to do other than to just dismiss it and keep the troll thoughts to oneself as there's no rational reason to project bs onto others to try and smear something or suck people in when there's little to nothing to love about it so far because it's a big unknown.

Agreed. I would like one as well, but I would like to know the price, performance, and final game list. It looks pretty neat to me, but I would like to know more first. Still, it looks to be an awesome product thus far.

  9.

I keep asking this question and no one wants to answer. Another vital question is what does NuTari have in the terms of software? What can they use to sell the box that will make people buy it? I'd love to see someone give this a serious answer, someone who knows their catalog, but I expect I will be met with gifs and pictures of delicious tacos instead. Maybe William Shatner will also make another appearance?

I think the answer to you and Bill's questions is quite simply "nothing". I currently have a Nvidia Shield TV that is able to more-or-less be able to do everything that the Atari VCS would be capable of doing. Now, maybe the Atari VCS might be able to do it better than that device, but I seriously doubt it. Quite simply, there are too many other options from much more established companies that will able to do everything the Atari VCS will be able to. The only thing keeping the Atari VCS afloat at this point is their name. If it was some other company they will be already tar and feathered at this point while being accused as another charlatan Coleco Chameleon type group.

  10. I don't follow.. The form factor doesn't fit the functionality of a proper bar top. The game list is severely nerfed to the point I'd say some of those games are not good.

Compare that to the SNES classic. Nintendo gives you proper controllers. All the games are quality. They realized some popular games were 3rd party and reached out to acquire the licenses for their inclusion.

SNK (or whoever they are now) has done NONE of that. So I don't understand how you could say it "looks great".

I have seen a few videos done by Madlittlepixel. As he recapped in the official release, the price and game list have not been finalized yet. Also, in the video he stated that he thought that this might come bundled with a HDMI cable and/or one controller. He is not 100% sure on that, but based his thoughts on leaks of the console and controller boxes. Personally, 40 Neo Geo games in a portable cabinet that can hook up to a TV and be played with Neo Geo CD type controllers is a pretty cool notion in my opinion. However, it isn't without its issues. Same with the SNES and NES minis. They too have their issues.

  11. Just out of curiosity..

For the 3 of you that might actually buy one, how important is the Wood-grain Vs the Black unit?

I am sure that the wood-grain edition would be the one most sought after.

  12. Well, I hope At Games drops the "t" and brings their "A Game" this fall! ;)

According to a representative from Hyperkin, they will be releasing the Retron 77 with cartridge & SD card support for games to play in 720 HD! I'm hearing the price point will be between $50-$75. For me to consider buying another system from At Games, they need to step it up and finally include SD card support as well as have the paddle input lag issue solved. Also, the new units need to be better distributed in stores as I had to look to QVC to buy my Flashback 8 Gold just to get my hands on one! Otherwise, I'll be jumping ship to Hyperkin before you can say Rumplestiltskin!

I am pretty sure AtGames is more than aware of the increased competition. The retro-gaming scene is becoming quite crowded and has become mainstream to a degree. I would not be surprised if the next FB line offerings offered SD card support. Also, they need to support to the driving controllers/paddles as well. While those are very niche, more so than the regular paddles, it still would be nice of AtGames to include support for those as well.

  13. I dislike rumors, but we know something exists, just not what so we go by that. But if all the stories are accurate to a degree, one could perhaps assume most of that game list is right, the shell for Japan/Asia is right, and that the so-called $100USD~ price may be right too. If it is of a quality enough build, has that price point, a decent list of titles, and it runs solidly unlike the Tommo mess I'd buy it.

Agreed. This looks like a good, borderline great mini console. However, we will just have to see what the official product is.

  14. I think what we're getting so far perhaps is a mix of truth and troll bait. The hardware mostly makes sense, but the button array I think could cause some problems, especially in their known staple of fighting games. The buttons should have in that space been aligned like a neo-geo gamepad layout at least. And yes the candy cab would confuse the average non-Japanese because those who aren't SNK nuts wont' know about those candy cabs and just think of the big red cabinets instead but that's just a plastic molding they could change too (like Nintendo did with SNES-US vs SFC-JPN markets for the classic edition.)

And the game list just has a lot of problems where it seems setup by trolls to get a reaction. I mean if it's real, it's stupid in ways and not in others.

That very well could be. Right now this information is not even official from SNK. All we have is the reported leak. Time will only tell what is real and not real. However, if the official reveal comes close to this, along with a reasonable price, it should be a hot ticket item.

  15. Hi guys,

I posted this on the Neo-Geo thread . Thought I share it on here from this YouTuber with his personal views towards the leaked info.

    Anthony

I saw this episode last night. I agree with some of his points, especially with Football Frenzy being in place over Baseball Stars 2 and/or Super Baseball 2020 and too many KOF and Metal Slug titles. Still, no matter how you slice it, this looks to be one pretty cool retro device. However, time will tell once SNK officially reveals the device. Heck, they might have leaked the information themselves just to see what people say and determine what titles to ultimately include/exclude. But, to call out-and-out bullsh*t on this is a little off in my opinion.

  16. Honestly, the Atari VCS just won't have enough juice to even remotely be a factor in the current modern video game industry. Just imagine what Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony can throw out into the area in a year's time for $200 to $250. Sorry, while this will be a niche collector's item, it too will go the way of the Atari Jaguar and (most likely) be a machine that should've, could've, would've.

  17. The same as Philips Videopac G7200, which itself is a G7000 a.k.a Odyssey^2. But yes, it is good looking though not very practical to reproduce even as miniature units. However Odyssey^2 as a Flashback format should be somewhat within reach if the manufacturer is willing to take a risk with an "oddball" system. I doubt it will sell any more than Colecovision or Intellivision Flashback though, or the array of non-2600 Atari systems suggested.

A FB Odyssey 2/Philips Videopac would be pretty cool. An even better oddball FB console would be a Fairchild Channel F. People would freak out over the controllers alone. However, there is virtually a snow ball's chance in Hades of that ever happening.

  18. I also wondered why cartridge support were never put on the Atari flashbacks like the genesis was

That is a really good question. I guess considering that a lot of must have 2600 titles are already included, especially with the Activision edition released last year, it is really a non-issue. However, you would think that this year's model would include cartridge and/or SD card support. Time will tell I guess.
