  1. My primary problem with the 8-bit Defender is when the screen gets hyper crowded it's hard to tell what's an enemy shot or an explosion particle. Also the flicker can get bad too. And since when you're good at the game, Defender gets fun when things get hectic (free space anyone? :D).. it makes somewhat of a difference.

Too bad though the control scheme of Defender doesn't translate well to home ports. It makes it harder to do things like fly backwards or do ultra quick reversals.. all essential advanced arcade techniques to the game.

  2. I know one thing, they should disable the word troll in this forums software...somewhere between 2004 and now about a half dozen folk forgot what the term troll ment and use it instead when they get upset because someone doesn't see exactly eye to eye with them.

Exactly. It's funny how people think that "trolling" automatically means flame wars or enticing an argument. Although that can be true, those are amateur trolling attempts and very obvious. Folks, internet "trolling" traditionally means you specifically put a comment to try and elicit responses. The best ones often are innocuous and crafted so others cant TELL it's a troll

Like.. 2 guys make a bet. They pretend to be non-english speaking foreign students and go on a board and one puts up a post about the difficulty in getting U.S. financial aid. Another makes a post asking how they can best pick up american woman and what do they look for in a man (or something like that).

See, now THOSE are true TROLLS. Just crafted b.s. posts put up to see how many people respond! Then they sit back and see how many people bite.. (e.g. some will try and be helpful and give the foreign student financial aid advice, others will post and attempt to put down the poster and reveal their resentment in foreigners getting money, etc.). Meanwhile the posters just watch in bemusement and count the hits. :P

But yeah.. the definition of trolling seems to be getting lost...

  3. It's ok to admit that after the Gamecube and what's come out so far in regards to the Revolution that Nintendo has no interest in giving gamers all they can for their money. It really is ok to admit that at this point in time, Nintendo has very little to offer. It will make you look alot less foolish...

ok! I'll admit it! Do I look less foolish?

    :P

Back on subject... anyone get their component cables for the Wii yet? Those things better be available tomorrow during the 2nd "Wii hardware rush" :x Anyone here lining up? :ponder:

  4. On the pie factory... wait it out... patience is the key... I often do not make a run for it until the Fireballs have all gone in whatever direction they were headed. They tend to gravitate to one side near the top... the other side will have a single fireball... make a run when they get to this point, and make a mad rush for the top.

See on the pie factory, the true strategy is to stay to the left of the fire barrel until all the fireballs come out. They're supposed to pop out in the screen-half you have mario in... so that way, every single fireball pops out to the left (and hopefully stays on that side).

I forget if that's true in the 5200 version as well but if I remember correctly, they just pop out to the left or right randomly  ..which is one of the things that is wrong with the game, or makes it more exciting depending on your vantage point ;)

  5. Pac-Man on the 5200 has the intermissions, while the 8 bit cart doesn't. Not sure if there are any other differences.

There are different pacmans on the 8bit.. I know two have a MUCH MORE accurate sound effect on the dot eating ("waka waka waka").. if the 5200 version with the intermissions had that sound effect, then it'd be almost perfect. :D I say 'almost' since on all versions, the collision detection with the ghosts still needs some tweaking to be more forgiving of course. :)

Anyway, comparing the 5200 to the 8-bits I think is futile. They're the same friggin thing (yeah yeah nitpick the small technicals all you want.. we all know they are more or less THE SAME). It's almost like comparing a toaster NES to a top loader NES.

I think it's more accurate to simply compare the variations of games themselves.

  6. Red5, my comment wasn't directed at you so much as this entire mess. I've been trying to find some feedback from someone who's played the system. So far, I've heard nary a peep out of Japan or America. The only guy I heard of who actually tried to play his system, found it dead on arrivial. I'm honestly curious to know if the people playing these systems feel it was worth the money and/or the wait. So far, the only answer has been, "it was worth the Mega$$$ I made on eBay!"

Which must mean that (for all practical purposes) absolutely no one who wanted to play these systems ended up with a unit. Kind of sad, actually. :(

You been under a rock or something? The wave of people buying PS3's .. is to SELL it! Everyone knows this. Come on man we've been talking about it here and other places for the past 6 months or something if not longer :)

  7. Too true, glad I said motor storm which also isn't a wii game, but it's still way better.

    Fixed ;)

But yeah, I think filet mignon is better than crabcakes but I'm not going to make it a point of conversation to tell you that over the table. Who the hell cares what you order. Eat what you want to eat. Dork :P

  8. Well yeah, once you have the aspect ratio stretched out it gets funky. Like in Demon Attack (or any L/R shooter) your ship appears to cover more ground faster.. and is of course wider :P

I often like to keep it 4:3 (or as close as I can possibly adjust it to) when playing emu's on a widescreen. But it really depends on the game of course since some play just fine stretched out.

  9. Seems smart to me. Why would they release a GC version when they're trying to push the Wii? They have the Wii now so why dilute it for a friggin dead system? No one wants the Gamecube anymore. They need to focus on what's new and move on.

Look at the Xbox. The Xbox is all but abandoned now that the 360 is out. You will never again see major releases from Microsoft for the Xbox. Same thing. New consoles mean it's time to move on.

  10. Yeah but I don't give a shit about the Wii at the moment as I dont have one yet. I want 360 games :P

    Well than you're getting them.

I never said I wasn't! You seem to be in some defensive 'phantom argument' of some sort I can't quite place.

I DID say it's about friggin time! :D And it is! It is ABOUT FRIGGIN TIME we get some REAL 360 games.. they've certainly had long enough to develop since launch!

  11. ABOUT TIME we start getting a nice flow of real games for the console rather than the gussied up ports and trickles of others.

That could be said about most of the wiis launch line up too you know.

Yeah but I don't give a shit about the Wii at the moment as I dont have one yet. I want 360 games :P

  12. Is FAR more impressive than anything found on the others.

Well it's about about time and only expected. It's been out the longest and the developers have had their time!

ABOUT TIME we start getting a nice flow of real games for the console rather than the gussied up ports and trickles of others.

  13. I notice it's people that have actual games that dislike mame.

Exactly. The discussion was originally about the fact that it's not unusual to find some hardcore arcade collectors that basically think "Mame is lame". It kind of veered away because not much of us here are arcade collectors (I'm not), and not many of us really know many arcade collectors. Anyway, I know a lot of them laugh at mame cabs too and dismiss them as pc's in a cabinet. But then again I guess it's understandable as really what it is: is simply just collector's bias! :P After all, people collect what they obsess over... and their obsession is actual arcade games from their youth and collecting the actual hardware. So using mame as a primary way to play games they loved as kids just doesn't do it. Incidentally, some of them even scoff at JAMMA cabs so take it for what you will.

What I notice about them though is just because they think Mame sucks, doesn't stop them from using it on whatever pc's they have to check out or preview games & roms. But I think when they say it "sucks" they purely mean it from their collecting standpoint. Like they wouldn't be happy settling for playing Mr. Do or Star Wars on their pc's (although they have it), or on a mame cab. What they want to play... is the actual machine. The rest is unsatisfactory.

But, I can't *afford* to have more than one cabinet. Choplifter spends its time under a tarp out in the garage except for during parties... when it comes in. MAME wins on convienience and practical expense.

If I had a full finished basement I could set up like an arcade and ten thousand dollars or so for games, I might have a full set of my favorite arcade titles...

One other thing I often forget... if anything on my MAME cabinet goes bad, I can replace or repair it, myself. I can't support the maintainence of a real arcade cabinet. I don't even like to open the back with an exposed flyback transformer and all that back in there. Arcade cabinets are for industrial use, and employ industrial design. A MAME cabinet is a DIY thing that uses, generally, off the shelf consumer parts. That makes a BIG difference.

Exactly. That's the difference between the majority of us, and these collectors. It may seem unreasonable to you and I for several reasons including cost and space.. but these guys exist and they are rabid  http://www.barncade.com , http://www.duramold.com, http://www.mylstar.com and that's only guys who decided to show their stuff on a website :o
