  1. Sure! :) In mame this only works w/ the Taito version. I guess that's the only version we had in arcades around where I come from.. since it worked on every Mr. Do machine I had come across.

    Start a game with an apple in the top row

    1.png

    Kill off all monsters except one, then kill all off your remaining extra lives

    2.png

    Climb up to the apple! (make a long tunnel)

    3.png

    Wait for the monster. Then just when he's almost just below you....

    4.png

    Move down a bit and shoot him! Make sure you move down just enough so the apple can fall, otherwise you're SOL.

    5.png

    The apple will fall and crush you to the ground as the stage ends.. but then you see something happening.. the lives start to accumulate.

    6.png

    And if all goe well, when the next stage starts.. voila. 255 extra lives :cool:

  2. Man I just can't join in the love for this game. To me it was just another Activision "timed" game. We hateses thoses! You just kinda fly and avoid the scrolling stuff. Even back in the early 80's.. despite the pretty graphics, it was zzzzz inducing to this 10 year old arcade lovin' kid. :|

  3. Dosbox has some compatibility issues occasionally. Another thing to consider if you have a powerful computer are the ol' virtual pc emulators (like Microsofts Virtual PC for example, or VMWARE amongst others). If you got the power to run it, it's great. I mean.. it's a self contained pc environment running on your pc. Put on whatever you want on it. Dos 6.0, Win 3.11, SUSE Linux. Whatever. Infest it with viruses.. it's all virtual. http://www.sysopt.com/articles/RunningOldGames/

    'Course there's a cost to these programs.. but if as we all know, maybe you can find the "free" version :ponder:

    There are still some occasional issues though. Like in virtual PC, Command and Conquer uses some CPU call that isn't implemented (it ends up giving some "'Internal Virtual Machine Error". But you then again you can run it in a Dos session in a virtual Windows 95/98 session! Stuff like that. You just have to dig around and figure things out :)

    Incidentally for really popular games there are often patches and dll's these days that people have made to allow some of them to be played in XP. Like for example I have Command and Conquer Red Alert running in my windows XP.. with no virtual pc at all. I just followed the directions I found somewhere (from the oldgames newsgroup?) And now, it works great!

    Example of a typical file fix for compatibility...

    ==============================

    ==Red Alert 1 Windows XP Fix==

    ==============================

    1. Uninstall Red Alert 1 if previously installed.

    2. Insert a Red Alert CD into your CD-ROM drive. When the autoplay menu appears, choose "Explore CD."

    3. Find "Setup.exe," right-click, and choose "Properties." Click on the Compatibility mode tab and set the compatibility to Windows 95.

    4. Install Red Alert as you would normally, but do not reboot when it prompts you to.

    5. Open up My Computer and navigate to your Red Alert directory (usually C:\Westwood\REDALERT).

    6. Right-click on a blank area in the folder, and "Sort by file type."

    7. Change the compatibility mode on all of the executable files (about 7-8 ) to Windows 95.

    8. Extract "Thipx32.dll" contained in this zip file to your Red Alert Directory, overwriting the existing Thipx32.dll.

    9. Boot up Red Alert and have fun!

  4. Yeah a couple of people have posted fixes for it (like mark spaeth for one, etc).. for actual arcade machine collectors to put in their own Pacman machines.

    Usually I think for pacman it's level 255 fix and for MsPac it's a level 141 fix. But yknow.. unless you're reeaaall good and desire to play these games for long marathon hours and hours, it's kind of moot :P

  5. Yeah but your mistake is assuming that it would be the same as the arcade version. ;)

    The first level one is of course super obvious to everyone who knows the arcade warp.. but who's to say there isn't a warp on the 2nd level somewhere? Or heck, the third.

    Again, let me reiterate, I am 99% sure there are NO warps in the 2600 version. :) But I would be glad to be proven wrong is all I'm saying :D

  6. No, the warps are not there.  I remember that being a huge let down for me back in the day when I bought it; I loved using the warps in the arcade.

    As did I.. but how do you know for sure there are none in the 2600 version?

    I've put lots of hours into the game since I bought it when I was a kid.. but who knows, maybe there are some in there we've just been never able to find :D (although yeah, I do severly doubt it) :P

  7. I asked about this a while ago. Basically because some of the 8-bit Pacman images have an ACCURATE "waka waka" dot eating sound when pacman munches. It's much much better than the 5200 dot-eating sound. And as you mentioned there are some versions with the attract mode, and I guess some AI differences.

    But my main thing I noticed was the waka waka :D If that could be put into the 5200 version with it's intermissions (which the computer versions didn't seem to have).... it'd be perfect :)

  8. We outta just put his picture on top of the "hacks" page :D

    Come to think of it.. there are ALL sorts of nifty little Nukey hacks he's done through the years... and I think some of them (especially the little ones like this color change for example) have probably fallen through the cracks! Nukey do you have some kind of history of all your various tweaks to games?

  9. There so needs to be a black-background hack for Video Olympics . . . Pong just doesn't look right with low-contrast colors . . .

    I second that. :) Should be easy to do! Make the paddles/playfields monochrome green or white too.. that'll be nice and vintage looking. :D

  10. SF2 all the way. Mortal Kombat has it's fans but to me the gameplay is just "tap tap tap". sf2 controls once you learn them become intuitive and free flowing. The half circles and charges you have to do for special moves really do a good job of making you FEEL like you're controlling a characters movements with the joystick. It has a fluid gameplay that tap tap tap just doesn't do that for me.

    That being said, my brother is an MK FREAK. So I understand how people can like that game.. :D

  11. OTAKU! That dude used to hang around in IRC a lot using that handle (usually in #rgvc and #rgvac). Last I heard he was trying to switch jobs.. But I think I scared him off with too many dog porno links :ponder:

  12. Very nice score :)

    I've always wanted a Space Invaders as well (and I will have one.. when the time is right). But I gravitate toward the Taito machines since I grew up with them. The Midways always seemed strange to me with the lever control on the cocktail and the button control on the uprights :P Don't get me wrong though. I still think they're ALL very cool :)

    I would love to have a Taito color SI part II cocktail. But my dream machine is definitely the uber rare upright Taito Space Invaders Part 2 Upright. :D

  13. I played Halo 2 for a couple of weeks straight :D

    Only multiplayer though.. single player was disabled...

    Beta testing or did you pirate a leaked test version?

    Adrian M I told you already (this is NE146 btw.. major_havoc is just my login on some pcs.. you gotta realize I fluctuate between 9-12 pc's at any time around here :lol:).

    But yeah it was a MS employee beta (I used to work there but bailed out a couple of years ago). Several of my friends who are still there volunteered to do testing so after usual weekly rounds of after-work golfing we'd head over to one of their pads and play Halo 2 online! It was only xbox live compatible, single player was disabled, and there were still a few bugs in it (like the voice chat, menu's, etc.). There was no chance of pirating it because it was specifically made so that it could only be played via xbox live and I believe the team leader had to activate the session itself to even play it.. (and of course my friends value and need their jobs so it would be over their dead bodies :lol:). Was fun though. However the testing period ended the other week so according to them they can't play it anymore.

    ..And that's about all I can say :D
