  1. Malls are busy here, far from over, online is a thing but far from the only thing.Just wish arcades could make a resurgence, barcades are ok but not the same thing or feel.

Arcades could only make a resurgence if you'd have companies willing to make new cabinets with new games and be willing to regularly service them. Of course that costs $$$, more so than making a game for a console or PC. There are novelty places like Funspot in Laconia, NH that keeps these cabinets alive, but like I said, in order for arcades to come back, companies need to be willing to take good care of these.

  2. I'd say they survived longer, until about 2001 or 2002. I was very young at the time, so obviously I didn't have the sense to see it was a dying business but I did remember going to a few independently owned arcades then. As for the reasons why, I think you're right on the mark. Games got bigger and better so there was no reason to fill your pockets with quarters and stand in front of a cabinet for hours when you had the same quality at home.

  3. My general reply to "that's what it sells for on Ebay" is "and Ebay gives me an Ebay Bucks reward, and a guarantee that I'll get my money back if it doesn't work." I'd probably then offer to pay their price if they immediately give me 10% back, along with a notarized money back guarantee. I wonder what they'd say...

Hah! That's a good one! It'd be nice if some people would just smarten up, like hell I'd be willing to pay a little more if they delivered to me, but nah. They want top dollar for their crap, which by the way, I hate so much when it's dirty, dusty and crusty. When I trade my things I at least put a little elbow grease into clearing out dust and crap in it. It's like you're saying, "I don't give two s**ts about you or this thing I've had in my possession for years, f*** you, PAY ME."

  4. Well.. In order to get off to a good memorable start you're going to want some good games that play well on hardware that is in working order.

If you post a pic we can instantly tell you what model you got.

Since you seem to be into real hardware I would perhaps suggest emulation as a way to try out new games before spending time and money hunting them down.

In lieu of emulation, get a Harmony cart and stuff it with roms. Particularly the new Scramble, Dintar's 8k Pac-Man, and Stay Frosty 2. Those are but 3 of many many top-flight homebrew games. A harmony cart essentially turns your console into a 1000-in-1 mega-machine featuring every VCS game ever made!

I don't have it yet, I'm trying to bide my time on when I can get it after paying bills, going out with friends, etc., but when I do I'll show you guys! I don't have a computer sadly, I'm not kidding when I say I live on my phone, and even if I did I don't think I'd want to emulate. Part of collecting is I want to see what I can find and where, or from who. I wouldn't be opposed to a homebrew cart but I'll get them for original software, unless it's an ultra rare game I'll never see or is too expensive. Thanks for the homebrew titles, I'll be sure to check them out!

  5. I've been kicking around for a bit making some room in my humble game collection for the classic Atari but I have no idea where to start. There's different systems (heavy sixer, Vader, huh???), different controllers, and my biggest concern, a LOT of crap games just schlocked into the market at the time. Now of course google is free and it's been a couple weeks since I've passively looked up what I'd need, (I was being a little facetious with the confusion on the different systems). I have my good old boob tube with the VCR I refused to let go, got a couple controllers, and I have a short list of what's considered the best games, but what about you old guys' experiences? Any personal stories, recco's, or tips I should be wary of I may not come across? Let me know, I'll be getting mine soon, I think it's a heavy sixer but I'll have to ask him again. Can't wait to play what started it all!

  6. Personally I think the best thing to do is continue the hunt: thrift stores, goodwill, savers and even Salvation Army (today I got a couple 2600 joysticks for 7 each. I made a couple great connections through OfferUp and letgo. The OfferUp guy is now my go-to if I want something close and at a value, the letgo sold me my four-speed Panasonic turntable for $30 WITH the external speakers. But I promise those experiences come one in a blue moon so treasure it! I'm sorry about your experiences Tanooki, sure sounds like my experiences at the flea market (including one time I was ripped off).

  7. Cragislist more or less nationally is just gone down hill in relation to video games on the whole. Enough years of predatory flippers and also modern day system scalpers too have scared people away or pissed them off so they don't bother to come back. It has got to a point where you can just go there and see the same refreshed garbage with ebay plus values on them like it's your privilege to be in the honor of a scumbag to 'buy local' basically. It just doesn't work that way very well anymore because even the newbie types are getting informed and not wanting to get hosed. They'd rather if they're paying full price go with a store locally that would have some return policy/warranty for defective goods than some douche meet up at a starbucks.

I had one experience with Craigslist where someone was selling EarthBound (in the hopes of trading for Mega Man X3...should've known better but I thought oh let's give it a shot), but would've sold it for $75 if no one had it. Offered his price for it and asked if I could open the cartridge to confirm if it was real. Can you guess? No response! Kept checking the post but it disappeared shortly after. I knew it was probably a scam but still, hurt I couldn't get the chance. OfferUp, Close5, and Letgo are what I use considering I've only got my phone, and I swear some of those people drive me insane. You have your all-around scumbag scalpers acting smug they're selling a Nintendo Switch for $450 (one guy must've been on crack listing it for $600) or your more FAVORITE kinds of people (as you mentioned before) trying to offload their CRAP at premium eBay prices! Oh, and they LOVE to tell you what it's going for on eBay when you counteroffer something reasonable. Then go on eBay dipwad!

Anyways long story short, I use these apps, despite me sometimes tearing out my hair, because no one on Craigslist even bothers to respond anymore and that's frustrating. They really should've gone to mobile if they want to keep up. And I have picked up some good finds on OfferUp and letgo, they're definitely worth a try.

  8. Back in the early 2000's, I was around 8 or 9, they were practically booming! My uncle had an Atari joystick controller plug in and a Pac-Man plug in. My own was the Spongebob one and I loved that and the Pac-Man one, too. The newer ones don't really appeal to me too much, but I may get one if they have games I can't get.

  9. Hey I wanted to show off the custom made sleeves for the 2600 and 7800 I made. I found this guys YouTube video and downloaded his plans. I added some color from a 2600 cover from Cover Project, and added some vector clip art I found on Google. They look great I think. I used my copy of Galaxian 2600 to make sure I got the shape right so the games will fit nice and snug.

Oh this looks amazing, I wish I had a computer to do this. Nonetheless, a great solution to protecting older games and keeping them nice and neat!

  10. Hey there everyone! If there's two things I love in this world it's old video games and Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, and you can expect to see a fair amount of both in this thread. If for some reason you are put off by either old video games or magical talking pastel colored unicorns I would suggest clicking the "Back" button on your browser now. You have been warned lol

That said, let's start things off with a look at my home console gaming center! :D

That's a bit of an older picture, before I added another game storage cabinet for my 130'ish Atari 2600 cartridges and some framed Atari posters to the back wall, but it should give you a fairly good idea of my setup. Maybe I can take some new pics later this week if people want to see them. On the subject of the Atari 2600, that seems like as good a place as any to start the look at my game collections for individual systems. Again, this will be a sightly older pic...

I've acquired a good dozen or so new games since that picture was taken, including Princess Rescue and a reproduction of Shooting Arcade; as well as a Wico Command Control Trackball, Wico Command Control bat style joystick, a Best Electronics Lightgun, and a Competition Pro 5000 joystick. Those I shouldn't have much trouble snapping some new pictures of in the near future. I do collect for a few other systems as well as the Atari 2600, including the original Game Boy / Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and the Sega Genesis. I use the term "collect" loosely, because honestly I consider myself more of a curator than a collector. I'm not out to collect every game published for my favorite systems, just the ones that I personally like and find enjoyable to play. If I buy a game and decide I don't like it after playing it then it goes up on eBay or off to a local game store and gets resold. There are a few historically significant exceptions to this in my game libraries (such as the copies of Pac-Man and E.T. seen above), but for the most part I'm only interested in collecting the good and fun games for my favorite systems. :)

I haven't taken any pictures of my Genesis collection yet since it's still pretty small (around 20 games) but I do have a few of my Game Boy library to share:

I have a real soft spot for the old gray brick and the games on it, but the vast majority of the time whenever I play a Game Boy game it's on my custom Twilight Sparkle themed Game Boy Color. I really dig the color pallets that Nintendo programmed into the GBC for many of the more popular original Game Boy games, and I like seeing the games displayed on a screen the same size as the one they were originally made for; but without any of the motion blur of the original Game Boy screen. The Game Boy Advance SP does get used for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games sometimes as well though (usually late at night when I don't feel like digging out the Worm Light for the GBC), and it has been somewhat customized too. It started off life as a Graphite colored AGS-101 model backlight GBA SP and really got the ever living daylights beat out of it by it's previous owner, but after I purchased it I ended up refurbishing it with a brand new purple housing, buttons, and screen cover. I also took it to a local game store and had them solder in brand new L and R trigger contacts, and it's been a constant traveling companion for me ever since. It really is a wonderful little system.

That's all for now! I hope you enjoyed this look at my gaming center and game collections, and you can expect to see this thread updated regularly with new pictures of Atari 2600, Game Boy/Color/Advance, and Sega Genesis games and accessories.

Wow, this all looks amazing! Very nice and neat, so much so I aspire to have this level of organization to my games. I haven't seen anything else yet in this thread but I just had to compliment this!

  11. I bought a Sega Genesis with two controllers (not pictured) for $25 along with Sonic The Hedgehog 2 CIB thrown in for free (I've been buying most of my stuff from a guy I met on OfferUp, super nice and always willing to give me a deal). A few days later I bought my first turntable, a Panasonic RD-7673 D (I may have messed up the mode number) from 1978, with external speakers for $30. Can't wait to get home and test them out!
