  1. It looks interesting... Is there a demo rom download of this game anywhere?
  2. Thanks for mentioning demos. It brings back memories of downloading pirated C=64 games off BBS's in the mid 80's. Most of those games were from Europe and many were never released in the USA.. For a good 2600 demo check out Sound Coder (NTSC). The YT video audio is poor - it sounds a lot better on Stella.
  3. It's very easy to stand in a area free of robots and just keep knocking off Otto over and over. Kind of like what we used to do playing Asteroids. My system is running Windows 7 Pro on a AMD Phenom II X4 695 CPU running at 3.40 mhz - with 16 gigs of ram and a Nividia GForce GT 640. It's not the most powerful, and I've been thinking about building a new Intel-based system for HD 1080p video editing. But that should be enough for Stella? This is the first time I've heard of a 2600 emulator putting a heavy load on a computer! And playing it again, It's a very minor slowdown on the (near impossible to clear) high level screens full of robots. Otherwise this is a fantastic game.
  4. Very nice. I'm playing this on Stella 3.9.3 and noticed some slowdown here and there. Also has anyone else ran up the score in Frenzy mode by nailing Otto over and over again?
  5. Dumb question: Have you attempted spray painting over the stained or permanent marked cartridges? Or tried using (well known) cartridges from other companies?
  6. By 84-5 I was in college and using my families C-64 a lot more often than the trusty 2600. I bought a 2600 jr at a Federated Stores close out in 1988 because our 2600 had stopped working, and I bought a lot of 2600 carts at places like Kay-Bee for a few dollars. By 1986 I was working 6 days a week as a Radio DJ. And even having daily access to (Oklahoma) newspapers and Associated Press teletype at our radio station, I had no idea a videogame industry crash was going on until I read about it in some online "History of Videogaming". I just assumed some game consoles were being phased in and out instead of entire companies going out of business.
  7. WOW, Great job! I'm impressed you did this all in basic yet have all the important stuff in. About the only glitching I'm seeing using Stella 3.9.3 is with Kong disappearing now and then. Only gripes: I also think its hard on the first level, and the collision detection of Mario with barrels, pies, fireballs etc is still too sensitive. When you get around to adding options, I'd like to have a choice between the American and Japanese order of levels.

Nice, but it needs more work imo. I'd love to see an Activision inspired version with smooth scrolling. Here's a flash version of the game: http://www.dogetek.co/game/
  9. Wow, this post is that old and I can still vote on it? As someone who bought both games in 1982-3, I loved Demon Attack and played it for hours. Phoenix was an good but not great port of the arcade classic and was easier to master.
  10. My Dates are kind of fuzzy.. After buying an SNES I stopped buying any consoles They just didn't interest me like computers did. 1977 - Coleco Telstar Ranger 1980 - Atari 2600 USA Sixer 1982 - Commodore Vic-20 1983 - Commodore C-64 1986 - Commodore C-128 1987 - Father's Kaypro II DOS 1998 - Atari 2600 Jr 1990 - A used NES and a bunch of cartridges at a garage sale -cheap! 1991 - SNES 1992 - fathers 286 DOS 1995 - AMD DX-4-100 with Windows 3.1 1996 - Cyrix 6x86 166 "Performance Rating" (more like 133 mhz) and Windows 95 1997 - AMD K-6 300 1998 - AMD K6-2 450 and Windows 98 2000 - AMD Athlon 750 2002 - AMD Athlon T-bird 1200 and Windows 2000 2004 - AMD Athlon XP 2400 and Windows XP 2006 - AMD Athlon XP 3000 2010 - AMD Phenom II X4 965 and Windows 7 Pro
  11. I just discovered the flashing car, I was looking for an audio or off track notice, sorry for complaining about that. I wish you could make the code randomize the flags like the arcade game does. Having 2 or a couple more flag patterns makes the game easy to master when you already know where the flags are. Keep working on it Ed, it's impressive the way it is, I just feel I'm nitpicking little things here and there.. (I've been playing too many Spiceware games!)
  12. I tried out your new beta but i didn't see a challenging mode indicator anywhere. The randomization of flags around the track seems predictable. I keep seeing them in the same places over and over. I agree it's harder to play on a 2600 Harmony cart than it is on Stella. The Joystick control doesn't seem as quick and responsive as using the arrow keys. And if you get close to an enemy car its very easy to crash into them when you make a turn. It seems your car slows down but they dont. The last high score I got was around 31200.
  13. From what I've seen, there's no set pattern for flags or rocks on the arcade version. There's always 10 flags (8 flags on Ed's version) with one a bonus flag that doubles your points with every extra flag you get. Thanks for fixing those little bugs. Another suggestion if you can squeeze this in: a different theme or a on-screen notice to tell the player its the challenging stage.
  14. Using the smokescreen uses up a lot more "gas" than it does on the arcade game. If I use the smokescreen more than 2 times, there's a good chance I'll run out of gas before completing a full course. The car speed on the challenging mode is too fast and very hard to control! Saw a couple of enemy cars go through rocks. Just found another glitch, pressing the fire button after the game is over restarts the game but doesn't reset the score. Otherwise its a lot of fun to play!
  15. On the arcade game the engine sound has slightly different pitches when you're driving North-South, East-West and when you make turns. That might keep it from becoming monotonous. Also I saw a opponent car run right through a rock and made it disappear instead of being stopped by it.
  16. Wow, this got better fast. A VERY NICE JOB Ed. Suggestions: A cloud smoke screen like the arcade version instead of a block. The engine SFX hum gets annoying quickly, On my subwoofer, It sounds like an amplifier with a bad ground. And it would kind of nice to have an level selector switch.
  17. Here's someone using a 3D printer to make an 2600 cartridge. Neat idea, but it took him 2 1/2 hours to make it. I've seen new C64, NES and SNES shells being sold, but nothing yet for the 2600.
  18. Getting better.. The speed is closer to the orginal (I compared it to the original on Mame) The 3 cars were a challenge though it seemed they were trying to drive on top of each other sometimes. Again I'm glad finally someone is working on this classic game. Rally-X was one of my favorites in the arcade and I wondered why Atari or any other company never tried to make a 2600 port. Btw are you planning on keeping this a 4K game or bigger? I'd like to see a port with everything the arcade version had, like the challenge levels, more cars and faster speeds on higher levels..
  19. Pleeze NO Radar Rat Race port! I'm impressed with the speed and playability of this early prototype, keep working on it!
  20. Ripoff Kong I just wonder how Gary Kitchen wound up at Coleco.. wasnt he happy at Activision or was he doing freelance work by then? Anyway My brother bought Coleco Donkey Kong new in 1982-3. I remember thinking it looked lousy and it played too easy. And after seeing what Colecto did to Zaxxon for the 2600 at a store demonstation (I think it was at one of those Imagic Kiosks at TG&Y or K-Mart) that turned me off from buying any Coleco 2600 games until they were being discounted cheap by the mid-late 80's. My favorite was Carnival.
  21. Excellent review, BTW I just subscribed to your channel.
  22. I would have voted for Hack 'Em, so 4K gets my vote, though I think its unfinished. Ms Pac Man is nice, great mazes, but it's too easy.
  23. Doing a google search I found a better copy on Flickr: And here's a button! http://www.i-mockery...12/DSC_2166.jpg
