Friday I got up (too) early and visited the two stores in my area that were selling the FB3 cheap (Walgreens & Dollar General). I almost bought the one at Dollar General, they had about 4 boxes and thankfully they had one opened and hooked up to a small TV for a demo. But I noticed the console didn't have the SD slot or mentioned it on the box, so I didn't buy it. The FB3's at Walgreens also didn't mention a SD slot on the box, so no buy. So I'm disappointed with this "bait & switch" by Atari. Did anyone buy one this weekend that did have the SD slot?

I wish i could get it for $15! My local Dollar General won't be selling one until Thursday morning when they go on sale for $25. Wallgreens is selling their for $29.99 locally starting today.
I'm very curious about it.. I just wonder if some of the popular hacks and new games like Lead, Juno First, Bolderdash and (proably not) Frantic will play on it.
If it sells well and people start checking out Atariage for roms, compatibility is something all programmers might need to think about.
-
That did the trick, the picture isn't rolling. Thanks!

Got mine around two weeks ago and I love it. It took 5 days to arrive after I ordered it. All the 2600 roms I have so far fit fine on a old 256mb SanDisk SD card with plenty of room to spare. Now that I found Rom Hunters collection site I'll proably have to find a 1-2 gig.
The only game that didn't work right was Nukey Shay's hack of "Pac-Man Arcade Enhancement" which caused a rolling screen on my Sony 26 flatscreen. But that was taken care of it with a VSYNC correction.
Great Job!
(btw anyone want a hardly-used Crocodile Cartridge?)

It's really strange, because the Sony works great with anything plugged into the HDMI inputs (cable box, blu-ray and X-box), an old VCR into the composite video inputs and my laptop hooked up to the VGA input.
I may be buying a bigger flat screen soon, I'd like to find out what brands have some kind of "game mode" and work best with old consoles.
I hope someone else is having the same video problems I am. I really like this hack. It should be the rom put in the Pac Man Arcade cartridge AtariAge sells.
-
This is strange, the game doesn't roll and plays fine on my $99 Symphonic CRT TV, but does on my $400 Sony Flatscreen (KDL-26M4000), that's modern technology for ya.
For some reason, the Sony doesn't like old video consoles through the video-audio inputs or cable. It always plays them too dark, and I've tried all kinds of different settings.

That would be better as a menu option. I'll look into it when I resume work on Frantic in January.
Thanks, that would be great for the kids. I have a young cousin who loves to play my 2600 but get frustrated when the games get hard. Another suggestion would be adding a "0" setting to Robot Shots to keep the robots from firing.
Keep up the awesome work, you're really pushing the limits of what the 2600 can do.
-
Thanks!
It probably could, but it'd be quite the flicker fest. I'll most likely work on porting Rally X after Frantic.
Yeah, that he is. I suspect a big part of that is how much more space the walls take vs in the Arcade. Possibly I could change the wall collision routines to check for collisions against "just the core" of the humanoid's body.
That would help. It took me awhile to get used to how sensitive the humanoid is since I'm so used to playing the original 2600 Berzerk. I'll have to try your rom on my Harmony Cartridge and 2600 Jr. tonight.
BTW is there a way to keep Evil Otto from appearing like on the 2600 Berzerk using the A-B difficulty switches?
As for Rally X - awesome! Love that game. I'll be really impressed if you match the speed of the arcade game on the 2600.
-
This is a awesome game, and it's kicking my butt right now in the Frenzy mode in Stella.
It's amazing to see all those robots go into a full attack blitz on a 2600.. makes me wonder could your game be converted into a Robotron 2084?
My only gripes is the humanoid seems a little too sensitive around walls and exploding robots.. it's too easy to get zapped.

I had a bug in one of the last releases of my version of the hack that had the wrong number of scanlines, so maybe it stems from that. Do other games work on the Harmony?
Last night I played what I believe is your original hack p26.bin and it played fine on the harmony cartridge. Also Nukey's Hack'Em 16K and Ms HackEm play fine too with no screen rolling. So far I'm very impressed with it.
-
Hate to mention this. I just got my Harmony Cartridge this week, loaded this rom and the screen is rolling.
I cant tell if it's my TV (A Sony Bravia 26 inch flatscreen) or my 2600 Jr because other games and hacks have played fine. I may hook it up to an older TV (a 19' cheapo Symphonic) and see what happens.

This remind me of record collectors who will pay thousands to get their hands on a one-of-a-kind recording of Elvis, The Beatles, etc, yet won't let anyone hear it or allow a record company to reissue it for fear of losing it's value.
DS should at least let Atariage give this game a good workout and review it. Lets see if its a kick-*** game thats worth $32,768.00

I was playing the online version of Angry Birds (if you haven't played it: http://chrome.angrybirds.com/) and brainstormed "could a 2600 version be made of this?".
I'm not trying to troll here, just wanted to throw the idea out. It would have made a cool Activision game in the early 80's.
-
Awesome work Nukey, this could easily replace Hack 'Em as my favorite 2600 version of Pac Man. About the only little thing I find missing is a signal at 10000 points for the bonus.
BTW I wonder if you could add all these features for a "Ms. Pac Man Expanded" hack in the future? Or how about a version of Pac Man with all the Ms. Pac Man mazes?
-
Haven't checked the hacks forum in a long time, and I'm glad you're working on this game again. Very impressive work!

Loved a few Tatio shoot em ups that were in my Jr. College Student Union in the early 80's.
Stratovox - which I believe was the very first arcade machine that used crude digital samples - if you could understand the scratchy audio - "We'll Be Back!"
Zarzon, a shooter Tatio licensed from SNK.
And I also liked Star Force .. which I think became more popular as a NES cart.
-
Awesome game room (envy!)... BTW is that an hacked Ms Pac Man-Galaga that can play multi-games? It looks like it's demoing Time Pilot in of your photos.
-
Great job on the new mazes...freshens up a old classic. How many more new mazes can be added to this game?
-
I had a freind who used to go to the arcade and play video games and pinball listening to his Walkman full blast. The arcade we used to hang out was also a pool hall and they always had some rednecks inside blasting country music on the jukebox.
What I can remember playing my 2600 to:
AC/DC
Cheap Trick
The Knack
The Kinks
New England (anyone remember this band?)
Today
Jet
Foo Fighters
Dragonforce
The Darkness
Dream Theater
and a thousand other bands off my IPOD.
BTW if you LOVE ELO check this new project band out:

Great job, I'm amazed you have kept working on this for 2+ years. Just got my crocodile cart and thats the 16K version is one of the first games im going to try out on it.
BTW Is the flickering of the score a bug? I have played both the 8K and 16K on StellaX and Z26 and noticed it.

I was in Jr College in 1982 and also working part time for a small 5000 watt AM station in Pawhuska OK. When Pac-Man for the 2600 came out the station ran a big weekend remote promotion with a local TV dealership who sold Atari consoles and carts. He must have sold 100 of them that week. (The town had no Wal-Mart then)
But looking back Atari had no clue that Pac-Man would create such a big backlash. Not only from gamers but from the new gaming magazines that were coming out then. After creating so many winning games that showed they gave a damn, they released a real turkey that caused a lot of people to jump the 2600 ship for home computers and other gaming systems.

Looks great, why cant Infoatari make and sell 'em like this?

-
Is there a online how-to guide about making your own 2600 carts? I'm still waiting to buy a Crocodile cartridge.
-
I like it! When I was going to college (in Northern Oklahoma) a lot of the Pac-Man's and Ms.Pac Man's at the local convenience stores and arcades had that speed chip. Many of them were converted non-successful or older games with bootleg romkits.
Could the mazes and Pac Jr. be hacked to make scrolling screen versions of Ms. Pac Man or Pac Man?

Very nice hack. I just wish there was a way to make the aliens more agressive. The game is too easy on the lower levels.
