  1. My memory of Terror From The Deep is soured by investing so many hours on it on the PS1 version.

Game saves took up a huge amount of save spaces and would often corrupt..so i used to juggle memory cards.

Plus the Terror missions..finding and killing the last creature on a mission could be an utter Ball Ache an awful lot of the time.

I still awake in a cold sweat thinking back to the threat Lobster Men posed as well

Oh dude... I can't even IMAGINE playing that game without a mouse. It's like trying to play Syndicate on the Jaguar. You really have to be invested in it... just not worth it.

Yeah... oh... forgot one cool little fact.

If you had the original "1st release" floppy disc" version of the game, there were some features that it came with that subsequent releases of the game didn't come with. It wasn't much, but if on some missions... where it was a much more "open" landscape, you'd occasionally find a large crashed / submerged airplane. Apparently around the time the game was released, there had been a major airliner crash, and it was deemed "unsympathetic" to release a game that had that in it. In the more formal release of the game (which came on a CD-ROM), the vast majority (if not all) of the submerged airliner landscapes had been eliminated.

  2.

A game that I would like to see a remake of is Stunts 4D Sport Driving. I know there has been a free remake made but as far as I remember it was rough and not so great, with bland graphics. But heh maybe it got better?

YES!!! I LOVED this game... I played it for hours and hours. Used to play it with my cousin all the time too... oh man, LOVED that game. I used to make my own tracks and everything too....

    No offence.

    All opinions most welcomed.

Because Terror From The Deep felt so much like a reskin. .Apocalypse stood out for myself.

Yes, Terror from the Deep was MOST DEFINITELY a re-skin. But I kind of like that about it. I also wondered why they didn't make #2 have both underwater and above water... since it would make sense, but yeah, loved TFTD. Mostly because it was exactly like the previous game. It was so similar that they even had a conversion program that you could download that would let you transfer your characters from one to the next.

  3. Sorry Xcom Apocalypse :

I bought the rebooted original twice on PS3, vanilla and later commander edition.

Wasn't that impressed with vanilla Xcom 2,but the various DLC turned it into something very special.

    Sadly bit bugged on PS4.

Ah ok... I have this one on CD-ROM. Yeah... don't mean to offend, but I spent... maybe 30 minutes playing it, and was totally turned off.

It felt more like I was playing Sim City, and the color pallet was so "washed out" that it lost all the aura and mystique that the original two had.

  4. Xcom 3 was the last true Xcom game,as much as i love the rebooted series of games, they don't have the depth of the originals.

What was XCOM 3? I have all the XCOM games, but don't really know which one you're talking about.

The newer XCOM games I thought were excellent. The "depth" of the story-line was far deeper than the originals, but there was less overall fighting it seems. In X-COM 1 and X-COM 2 TFTD... there were endless missions... which I wasn't opposed to... but the new ones were more engaged in the story.

  5. It has been a pleasure to work with yet another publisher to bring an additional fully licensed game to the platform.

Thanks everyone for the kind and supportive words, and I hope you all enjoy driving yourselves crazy playing Loopz!

You're like the George Soros and Koch brothers of the Atari Jaguar! hahahah... somehow, you're involved in every single project.

  6. Can't express enough, I would be incredibly interested in this. If this becomes available, please add me to the waiting list... and I'm serious this time! Haha...

I literally buy every serious game that gets released for the Jaguar, and would love to have a system that I could pull the roms down so I could load them on SD.

    Thanks!

  7. Sorry guys; you're not going to rope me into an early reveal. Good things come to those who wait. :)

There are about 100+ animals and insects that can kill you, within a single acre of land in Australia, and almost as many in South Africa. I say we give them an early reveal, just in case... you never know what could happen.

  8. The previous Starcat Devocean release »HalMock FurBall: Sink or Swim« was a bit of a shock to us. The download numbers were the lowest of any of our releases yet. From a technical and creative point of view it was pushing the Jag further than any of our releases before. So what went wrong? Not your kind of game? Not interesting because there is nothing for collectors? Not enough »promotion«? Not interesting because it’s just a demo to test the waters?

    Cheers

    Lars

Hi, just wanted to answer this question. I've literally never heard of HalMock Furball. I just did a search on YouTube for a video of it, and even in quotes, I couldn't find anything. The best I could find were cat videos, and there was one video from RetroGames, but it looked like it was a review of a ton of stuff, and that just happened to be in it.

I've been on AtariAge since 2004... and just never seen it. So promotion might be a big deal.

Also, I rarely download games, even though I have the cart that allows me to flash games onto it. It's just kind of a pain in the butt, so I don't bother. I'm sorry. But if the game was good, and you guys did a good release, I'd play it. I've bought every serious attempt at a home brew on the Jaguar. Both CD and cartridge.

I'd really appreciate someone posting or uploading a video though...

EDIT: I do have BombSquad. If I'm not mistaken, that's on CD right? I rarely play my CD games... but I do buy them all.

I thought the article in the green bubble in the lower right-hand corner was particularly interesting. They basically more or less say that 3 years is the lifespan of a video game system. I stopped following game systems after I graduated high school, though I bought a few systems here and there afterwards. So... I don't know if 3 years seems to line up with the age of all the other systems, but I thought that was interesting never the less...

  10. Can't remember if it had NES in its title as they had done one before it:

Dreamworld Pogie - A New Old world Game created by the Oliver Twins

That was for NES too, and was a Oliver Twins (Dizzy guys) title as well. I am not sure if you can pop a 'watch' on kickstarter for certain people doing projects, but if you can't then get on subscriber list over at retrofusion and that is the same person and he will say when he has new items coming on Kickstarter so you don't miss them - they have done 2 NES games so far.

I do love to see what people are doing on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and have backed a few projects, but have also been glad I have not backed certain projects.

I have it for the 8-Bit NES, but don't remember being that enthralled with it. I got it much later, after the fact... but with the improved Jaguar graphics and sound over the NES... it's something I'll definitely play!

  11. I thought it would be interesting to extract all the computer text from AvP and post it in a more readable form. This is all from COMPUTER.S in the source code.

Fun fact: Instead of storing all the computer text as strings and using a generalized print routine to display them, Rebellion hard-coded the X/Y coordinates of every single line of text. Like this:

    com1text: dc.w 120,30

    dc.b ttype_on,"GENERAL LOG",newxy

    dc.w 30,70

dc.b "SELF DESTRUCT SEQUENCES CANNOT BE",newxy

    dc.w 30,80

dc.b "INITIATED WITHOUT SECURITY CARD 10",newxy

    dc.w 30,90

dc.b "CLEARANCE. THE CAPTAIN HAS ONE OF",newxy

    dc.w 30,100

    dc.b "ONLY 2 SECURITY CARDS WITH A",newxy

    dc.w 30,110

    dc.b "CLEARANCE OF 10",0

    These were not good programmers.

My guess is that the responsibilities were broken up to various programmers. I think you'll probably find the guy who embedded the text was probably fairly new to game programming, as well as to software development. He probably tried, but then ran into situations where text wouldn't display properly (going over the necessary field), etc...

I can only assume that where text went wasn't static all the time... but it's been a while since I've read it. Obviously, a function, at least if they're looking at screens that will always be the same size / etc... should have gone through a function. If not for any other reason than simply because it would have been easier... but also because you could port the game in a number of languages with far less effort.

Oh well... they were probably rushed, and that got the job done for the guy...

  12. Yes. I (personally) find a couple 2 or 3 arcade cabs useful in order to create ambiance. It's when a basement becomes jam-packed with so many cabs you can't spread out and socialize that I start disliking stuff. When it becomes a maze.. it's not for me.

Any collection looks good as long as it's arrange and presented tastefully like so. It's when consoles need to be unshelved, unpacked, power-adapter located and snaked to the back, and a lengthy "set-up" process followed; that's what I dislike.

Consoles should slide out of their shelf and be ready to go, the only setup that should take place is maybe changing a controller and flipping an A-B switch to get to connected.

    ---

    And less is more.

I couldn't agree with you more, even if I wanted to.

Totally agree. I have three cabinets in an otherwise huge living room, and I'm starting to think 3 is just too much, or perhaps the maximum one should have. They look good, add some real interest to the room... a playfulness I suppose.

All my game systems are in the cabinet under the TV, and ready to play. I don't have tons of stuff, but then put the other consoles (Saturn, Nintendo, Jaguar) in the guest bedroom.

  13. The Panther was a 16-bit system, right? I suppose I could Bing it... but I forget. Did it not become the basis by which the Lynx was based off of? Seems like it would really just be an SNES / Genesis style system.

My opinion, the Jaguar failed because of mismanagement, and a shift in game desireability.

I'm not sure really how to phrase this properly, but Atari was not one of the "cool kids" in the early to mid 1990s. In ~1993, when the Jaguar was in full swing, I was in high school, and most of us thought the Jaguar was a joke. I myself, a huge fan of the Jaguar, can even remember making fun of the 1 or 2 kids in our entire class who had an Atari Jaguar. There was one kid with a Jaguar who had DOOM. He was telling us how cool it was, and we all laughed at him because a few of us had it on PC. I even remember asking him if he could save. I mean, it was high school, we didn't really talk about games since we were all more concerned with girls, what college we were looking to get into, whatever... but the Jaguar wasn't popular.

There were a few blockbuster games. Games like DOOM was good, so was WolF3D. They had games like Alien vs. Predator and several others... but they didn't have very many "franchise" games. It was hard... and while a good system in my opinion, it was too much, too late, as even though it was great stuff... the technology surpassed it within a year with the Playstation and the Saturn.

  14. Hello,

how much is worth BattleSphere for Jaguar?

    I cannot find it...

As a *REALLY GOOD* reproduction, $35 without the box.

An original BattleSphere (non-Gold), in really good "CIB" condition, I see them going anywhere from $375-500. BattleSphere Gold tends to go for about $75-100 more. They didn't make a lot of them, and because of the big background to the game.. (IE: the effort put into it), it's worth more than other games that have an equally low production rate.

As for the game itself... I'd say it's a lot like Wing Commander 2, but without any real plot.

  15. So, I have this 486 DX2-66 machine that runs really well. 32MB RAM, VGA, SB, etc.

For a while now, I've used some cheapo Dell LCD monitor and everything is fine. Yesterday, I found an NEC 17" CRT VGA monitor (MultiSync 75) for $3.99. So I jumped at it!

Got it home, hooked it up and it seemed to work great. I noticed the environmental logo in the upper-right (during boot) looked monochrome. So I fiddle with the OSD controls and they are all in super bright color. This screen actually looks amazing.

So I load up Eye of the Beholder and config for VGA. Again, looks amazing! You just can't beat CRT.

Then, something weird happens. After the intro plays, the screen goes to a sort of gray scale. All color is pretty much gone. I restart the game and the intro is in color again. Do it a couple more times, and the intro is now gray scale. I have to reboot the computer to get the intro back to normal color.

The game itself never shows in color. Only the intro.

Next I tried a few other games (Hillsfar, etc.). All of them show in gray scale!

I have looked at every BIOS setting I can find (yes, it's in VGA mode). I degaused the monitor, turned the monitor on/off, etc. I only get color during EOB intro! When it does show color, it's rock steady. No waving or fringes.

Now, the OSD shows the refresh is 70 Hz. So I'm thinking the game goes into 60 Hz or something different and that causes the screen to loose the color. Every now and then, I can hear the monitor "twerp" when it switches to the game screen. So I am assuming it's switching the refresh rate.

However, the OSD always show 70 Hz.

Any idea what's going on with this? This being a multi-sync monitor I would have assumed it could handle the popular DOS games.

I can provide screenshots if anyone is interested.

    Thanks!

I had one of those monitors back in the day, except the 15" version. It was really something else... totally flat screen, just amazing picture.

Yeah, like others said... probably why it's $3.99.

If it's not doing it with the LCD monitor, then it's not the computer.

  16.

Get another 25 people to do that :)

So, serious question... is there a concern that you guys might not make the volume that you're hoping to reach? Because... I am TOTALLY cool with buying extras and selling them after the fact at absurd and insane prices 5-10 years from now.

The thing is, I stopped buying two copies of every game because I didn't want to be an ass to others in the "community," so to speak. But if I'm being asked to do that... I will totally do that!

  17. Ok, so there has been a slight delay with the boxes. They will be with me next week and will be shipped out by next saturday. I'll put up some pics when the boxes finally hit.

You mean you're not printing them your HP DeskJet 32c with card stock, and assembling them with Elmer's paste sticks?

  18. But since the car brand is British, it should be pronounced the CORRECT British way. :P

Hah... here in the US, you get a lot of people who try to pronounce things from different countries... and they try to pronounce it as the country of origin would. But that's technically not how it's supposed to be.

British English and American English truly are different... not just in the way words are pronounced, but in the way grammar and punctuation is handled as well.

For example, in the UK the use of quotes is handled different than they are in the United States. In the US, if a quote comes at the end of a sentence, the punctuation goes before the quote, without question. This is the same for whether or not the punctuation even has anything to do with what is being quoted. While in the UK, it is very specific on whether or not the punctuation is part of the item being quoted (almost like parenthesis in software code).

But also... Aluminum versus Aluminium. It makes it complicated because English is very much the same from the UK, to Australia, to New Zealand, to Canada, to the US.

But a more obvious difference is how we in the United States say the country Brazil. In the US, it's pronounced and spelled "Brazil." In Spanish however, it's spelled Brasil and spelled differently. So, a person speaking American English wouldn't call the country Brazil... "Brasil…" because that would just be wrong. So while an American may like to call the Jaguar a "Jaguua," it's really just quite normal for us to say "jag-war."

Like Herb, and other words, or anything that starts with a "Z."

EDIT: As a fan, and occasional owner of Porsche cars... I will say that I'm guilty of that as well. "Porsh" is how we're supposed to say it... but oh does it irk me. I call it "Porsh-ah" even though I know it's not phonetically correct in American English.

  19. So, I'm selling another one. This one is a 4-bay unit. While all of them have 4 bays, this one can actually have 4 external 5.25" bays. Comes with the following (copy / paste from my auction):

    --------------------

Hi! Thanks for looking! I'm selling my 8088 KayPro PC-10. This is a fairly rare one that I recently repaired. Most KayPro 8088 computers did not have all four 5.25" drives accessible as external drives. As you can see in this model, it has two floppy drives on the right, and a single hard drive on the bottom to the left. This one is also unique because it actually has an Intel 8088 processor, rather than an NEC V20 processor like most other KayPro models.
Here are the specifications for the computer:
    • 8088 Intel Processor on KayPro mainboard
    • KayPro Multifunction I/O card
    • 640k base, and 128k extended for RAM-DRIVE
    • 1 Serial Port / 1 Parallel Port
    • KayPro EGA Graphics Card (CHIPS chipset)
    • Seagate ST-251 RLL 32mb Hard Drive (Working!)
    • Dual 360k 5.25" Chinon Floppy Drives
    • DOS 3.21, and a couple of games installed
    What you get:
    • Computer as shown in the pictures above
    • Power cable
    Does not come with:
    • Monitor
    • Keyboard
Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
