Starflight 3 - Fig Campaign! Please Help!
82-T/A replied to 82-T/A's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It's at 23% now... so it's not that bad, but that was a concern of mine. I'm not sure how they reach 100% goal, but I can hope. I own the Genesis version of the game, but never really played it. The game was most prominent due to it's DOS releases. The Genesis one is an entirely different release, and I think not necessarily by any of the same programmers. Yeah, the person who wrote Star Control was roommates with Greg Johnson, if I'm not mistaken. Anyway... Starflight is one of those things where... you had to be there during the time. If you weren't someone with an IBM PC back in 1986, you'd probably not fully appreciate it (don't blame you). Graphics were good for the time, but it was the depth and... "loneliness" that the game presented to you that made it special. You did run into aliens, but there was the fear of unknown. Star Control 2 is very similar, but much too campy / happy... Starflight was much more sterile... if you will. -
So, I did go to your link, and it stated that the limitations pertain to: "for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright" … I kinda doubt you'd be using your copied ROMs for any of that. Pretending that what you're doing in any of those would of course, be dishonest. Furthermore, a law is to be taken in whole, you cannot simply use the parts you like, and not use the parts you do not like. Unless you own a copy in any valid form, you're stealing. PERIOD. Let's just all agree what it is and be cool with it, and not try to pretend like it's something it's not. No judgement from me, I'm doing it too simply because there's no other way I know of to get the games I want (500 in 1 arcade JAMMA) without having to buy a warehouse to store 500 upright cabinets... which would be ridiculous. If they opened up an arcade rom store, with the 500 in 1 system that allowed me to pay for what I wanted... and they were reasonably priced like buying songs on iTunes, then I'd totally do that too, and they'd have so much more money. Like I said... I'm a sucker for GoG, and more than half the games I've bought on GoG, I actually already even own in original CD form, but they've packaged them so well... why the hell not.

Starflight 3 - Fig Campaign! Please Help!

Thanks man. I like to see people support it. I haven't thrown any money in, but I will. I'm debating whether to do the $250 to buy a share, or if I decide to just put money in and buy a copy with the other option. I'll make a decision by Friday. The campaign closes a few days by the end of September. -
Starflight 3 - Fig Campaign! Please Help!

Believe it or not, Starflight 2 was actually released on CDROM at one point too. Like SF1, it too was also on dual 360k floppies. There's no difference between the CD and floppy version (at all), it's just cool that it's on CD... haha. Yeah, from what I understand, Tandy had better sound. I don't remember if it was one of the options (like how you'd select video), but Tandy played better... either SF1 or SF2 or both... They also had it on the Genesis as well. -
Again, not trying to be a jerk here... but NONE of us are lawyers (pretty sure no one here in this discussion is a lawyer). So while it may be fun to argue the semantics, or attempt to IRAC previous cases, or appellate judgements... the fact is, it's still illegal, and it's still ethically and morally wrong. But... I'm not making any judgement on anyone here, and I've stated myself that I have some stuff that I too shouldn't have. Again, no one here is a lawyer, you can't simply state that, because we know for a fact that individuals, corporations, etc... have all been arrested and / or fined for stealing software (pirating software by making digital copies). The law, often written by people who don't fully understand the technology... has some loopholes, the intent is pretty clear. You can make as many copies of software you want, and sometimes you're even allowed to loan it out so long as you agree not to use it at the same time. But... when you download ROMs, or you download an old computer game, and you never purchased it... that's illegal. It just is. Again... no judgement here from me, I've done all kinds of bad stuff, but we shouldn't pretend like what we're doing is totally cool. I kept ALL my computer games that I bought on CD... every single one. They don't really yield much "return" when you're doing the... "OMG, just laid off, and have to pay my bills." hahah... been there too. Laid off after the .COM bust, and then again after 9/11. I stole all kinds of music back in the day with NAPSTER, but then deleted it all. GENERAL response for everyone who's looking for the moral "out"... here's how I feel about it: If you can reasonably buy it... then you should. Stealing it because you don't want to pay anything, seems pretty lame. We've got the lowest unemployment rate in the US for every segment of the population in recorded history, except for white males (68-year low). So there's no reason why we can't afford a few bucks here and there. GoG is awesome for filling that need. I even find myself buying all the games on GoG that I ALREADY OWN on CD, but because they're packaged up so nicely by GoG, and for $1.29, how can I say no? I'll put it this way... here's my ethical justification. Dragon Warrior 1 - If you really like this game, just buy the damned cartridge. You can get it on eBay all day like for a few bucks. Dragon Warrior IV... it's like $100 bucks in shit condition. So I wouldn't expect anyone to bother... just download the ROM. That's me! Haha... anyone who's bothered can shout me down, and that's cool... not trying to knock over the apple cart...

Yeah... I.. "pretty much" stopped stealing games once I got my first job back when I was 16. I worked for McDonalds for 8 months, and then took a job with CompUSA as a Software floor manager (or whatever it was I was called). I bought games like crazy. I have a case-logic multi-sleeve folder that has something like 200+ CDs and DVDs in it... all computer games that I bought over the years. Every Ultima game, every Sierra game... I bought them all. Bought the collectors editions, the multi-packs, whatever. Any game I ever had, that I liked... I own. Every software I own has a legitimate license... Rosetta Stone, every copy of Windows, etc. Same goes for video games. I guess you could say I still have stolen games, as I did recently buy a Dragon Warrior multi-cart for the NES on eBay. It has all four Dragon Warrior games on it. I only actually legitimately own 1 and 2. I just don't want to pay $120 for Dragon Warrior 3 and 4... and really, I've never even played it. Aside from that, I also have the Jamma 500+ in one (or whatever it is). I do have a real Galaga and a real Missile Command upright, but that doesn't make up for it. But yeah... I don't feel bad about it. I've legitimately bough thousands of dollars of games. But I'm not oblivious to the fact that it's still theft. I don't have any stolen music though. I've got an equally sized case logic folder with just as many music CDs from back in the day when people used CDs. I don't really have any MP3s... deleted them all. I'm an old fart now ever since I turned 40... and now I basically listen to conservative talk radio all the time, hahah... Well... look, not trying to be a jerk here, but not sure how you think you've come to that conclusion. "Piracy" by the simple virtue of the word, means theft of goods by pirates. I mean... the word LITERALLY means "Robber of the Sea." It's a copyright law because it's an "intangible" … like stealing an idea (whole purpose of having a patent). But it most certainly is "stealing."

Not going to sugar-coat it. I love getting stuff for free... even if that includes ROMs. But the reality is... it is stealing... there's just no other reality to it. It's taking something that's not yours (intellectual property) and sharing it. The socialism argument doesn't work either... no one has a right to "equal access" to Super Mario Brothers. That said, yes... I bought the "2 Billion-In-One" JAMMA unit for my POLYBIUS cabinet. I know of no other way to get those games legally... but I understand what I'm doing is wrong. I have purchased every NES cartridge that I want (Bards Tale, Dragon Warrior games, etc.). And... I get suckered, constantly... for buying games on GoG... at least twice-weekly. Again, because there's a way for me to do it legally. Not going to criticize anyone who downloads ROMs, but let's not pretend it's legal, or there's a moral acceptance there. It's pretty black and white. If I was the spokesperson for the Software Piracy Association, I'd say, always purchase intellectual property if there is an avenue to do so. Personally, I'd love to see someone set up a site that allows you to download ROMs in the same way GoG allows you to download old school games. This would be a great solution, and if you make it cheap enough, could lead to some pretty significant revenue streams. They could offer packs, special deals, and group sales. Maybe sell the ROMs for $0.25 each, and then really good sought-after games, like Legend of Zelda, Link, stuff like that... perhaps for $0.75 or $0.99. So much opportunity there. Nintendo, if they were smart, would work towards this in a GoG-style model.

Hey guys, sorry to spam you with something to spend your money on... but I couldn't help myself on this one. Starflight 3... don't know if anyone here remembers the old Starflight games. They have a very special place in my childhood. I bought Starflight 1 as the very first game I ever purchased as a kid. Obviously... my mom bought it for me. But the year was 1986, and the game was $80 dollars!!! We bought it from Software City in Richmond, Virginia, and it came in a sleeve set that looked like something a record / LP would come in. (We also had Arctic Fox and other games in that format). We bought it on 5.25" floppies (the only way you could get it then) and I installed it on my 8088 KayPro... which at the time, only had herculese monochrome graphics (green and black). It was awesome. Later, we bought Starflight 2 in the later half of the 80s, and continued the addicition. In any event.. 30 years later, the third version of the game is being worked. Greg Johnson, the original project manager, and lead developer, is working through a Fig campaign to get the third one written. I supported two other Starflight 3 development events, but they all failed... like myself... we couldn't dedicate much time, and devleopers dropped off. Anyway, please spread the word, and contribute if you can. The lowest contribution is $20, and you'll get a copy of it when the game is produced. https://www.fig.co/campaigns/starflight-3 Thank you!

Heh... reminds me of a date I went on back in the day...

It's one of my favorite games on the Jaguar. … and yeah, the CD version just seems worlds better, but for the life of me can't remember what exactly is different about it.

Please let us know when more become available. Definitely interested in getting this.

Midway Island. A small re-supply plane comes around once every 6 months. There's only 10 people on the island... 1 cook, and 9 "keepers" that try to help restore the island. All they have is old WW2 crap, and whatever Reagan put there back in the 1980s. They have a golf cart. I hear there's a game boy somewhere on the Island. .. that's about it.

There were a bunch of games that did this. The Three Stoogest game also did something similar on the Nintendo... I think it was the first speech game on the NES which shocked a lot of people... and of course, it did it on the PC Speaker as well. I never really had any games that used wave modulation on the PC speaker. But one game that I had growing up which really worked the PC speaker (all with beeps and boops) was "Sentinel Worlds - Future Magic I" It comes "pretty close" to doing what your video shows on the PC speaker.

A bunch of PC ads from December 6, 1994
82-T/A replied to Flojomojo's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Hah... love the CompUSA ads. I used to work for CompUSA back in the day. I may still have my red CompUSA shirt somewhere also. Sad to see that company go down the tubes... -
I don't think I'd really change anything. My mistakes and excesses are what have made the person I am. I do still feel bad for having thrown out ALL of my game boxes. I had like 100+ games, every Ultima game, Wing Commander, whatever. I tossed out all of those games. All I kept were the contents. I still wouldn't want them now, but I know other people do, so I do kind of feel bad having tossed all of that stuff in the recycling.
-
Ah man... I missed it. You're out of stock! I'm definitely interested. Impressive that you can pull the power for that from the Jaguar's controller power. Didn't know it had enough! Very cool.
-
Do we know what those two games will be? Suspense is killing me!
-
Dude, I will tell you what... the Boston Harbor probably never smelled so nice that night, as it ever has in the history of the harbor. It normally smells like rotting fish! haha...
-
Lol... too soon? I thought we could joke about it at this point.
-
Did anyone ever figure out what this system was based on? Maybe a prototype of something? Seems to have SNES controller connectors. It looks like a REALLY good "prop" for a movie, I mean... I'm surprised. Most movies, even the best ones, don't put that kind of work and effort into something that probably has less than 5 minutes total combined screen time.

? That wasn't an unprovoked pop. I was being silly. I know message boards don't properly convey inflection, but what I said should hardly be taken as a slight. Don't know what n-g.com is. But it can't be worse than the Jaguar forum at times! Hah... EDIT: I've never known anyone from UK to assume that talking about the Revolutionary War is a heated topic. Most of my UK friends like to joke we're just another one of the colonies that got away. I may be half-Argentine, but hey... I still call them the Falkland Islands. Apology implied if you thought I was being trite.
