Ah, nihilist postmodern philosophy - you must be French
There's always room for discussion. That's what keeps us going. Otherwise, we might as well close this messageboard

This topic has been discussed many, many times, but what the heck, here's my two cents...
It's hard to draw a line. To me, even NES enthusiasts are "today's gamers". I always frown when people call NES a classic console. There's only one true classic, and it's the Atari 2600. No other console comes close to it. Of course, others appeared earlier or had better graphics, but no other console has had so much impact.
Maybe in 10 years time, it turns out there are lots of highly collectable PSX protos and the total number of PSX games and variations is 3000+. But even then, the 2600 will be the first to ever accomplish that feat. That makes it the King of Consoles.
However, that does not mean that Atari 2600 games have the best gameplay ever. Or, put another way, that modern games always have bad gameplay. Sure, some of the classic hits are still great to play today. But of course, they don't stand a chance against the original games that are available for, say, Sega's Dreamcast. Those are just as much about gameplay as the good 2600 games were.
When discussing innovations in games, it's also very hard to draw lines. One could argue GT3 for PS2 can be traced back to Pole Position, so there's nothing new about it. Frames of reference like that might not be good enough to allow for a fair discussion.
Also, don't forget, the library of bad games for the Atari 2600 and the likes is much bigger than the one of good games. We classic gamers shouldn't be blind for that, while worshipping our woodgrains c.s.

Hi,
Can you make some scans of these? If you can, I think I will be able to tell you what they are.

Not the same, just similar. I think it's safe to say that all Video Gems games are originals. Unlike some of the other companies that entered the scene just before the crash, Video Gems appears to have been in it to indeed produce good games.

Hey fish,
You are absolutely right, these are common as hell. Though "rarity" alone doesn't determine the value of an item, desireability is very important as well. And strangly, these sex games are very appealing to people

Hey San, how come you're so much into these limited releases now?

Hi Albert,
I won't be there.. will you still take my picture?

Hey San,
How about picking up gems like these from an Ebay auction nobody else has noticed? I mean, that's like beating all your professional peers vs. just beating some fleamarket guy that does not have a clue abour the rarity they're holding in their hands
But I guess this is why you are going to Brazil, to find the new gold yourself

Thanks guys!
I have no idea yet how I will ship this baby to me, but I'll figure something out. My girlfriend went berzerk, but I guess she's just jealous I got myself a new friend

I'd say it's too much. With all the supply that Ebay has generated, Waterworld isn't that rare anymore... $100-$110 appears to be a fair price at the moment.

Homevision rules: nice, original games, lovely cases and great boxes. It really is too bad these games are so incredibly hard to find. Strangly, you are more likely to find a Taiwanese pirate that didn't even bother to remove the Homevision name fro the screen than the real thing.
There are 40 or so titles out there, but they must have had a real limited release.
You hardly ever see them, loose, let alone boxed, which kinda surprises me - I mean, those big plastic boxes are not the ones you'd throw out right away? I'm still dreaming of finding an old Belgian warehouse with a couple of complete Homevision sets some day...

Hi all,
I dug up al my Video Gems games and took a picture of the carts - Alex/Albert, hope you can use it
Steeplechase turns out to be a very nice game. It has a split screen, top side showing top view, bottom side showing side view. You move your horse up and down on the top part of the screen, while you jump on the bottom part of the screen. Very clever. You race on a set track, trying to beat the best time, which is kept in memory.
Treasure Below is a bit of a disappointment. You dive from a little boat into the sea, hunting for two treasures on the bottom, while avoiding three sea creatures. Here too, the high scores are kept.

Hmm... vacation....
only a week-and-a-half and I'll be in Southern Spain for three weeks...
No AtariAge, no Ebay, no auctions, no trades... only sun, beaches, tapas, tinto, and Andalusian beauties... oh yeah!

Originally posted by Russ Perry Jr:But with these old games, the originator has no rights concerning the ROM itself. They could potentially sue for infringement over the likeness of the game graphics, but I think this is unlikely. They would have no right to complain if the graphics were changed enough so that the game no longer appeared similar to the licensed work(s), and the title/documentation was also changed.
Is this the very reason there are so many weird Taiwanese pirates out there with slightly altered graphics and the coolest names and "instructions"?

Trust me, that too will show up again, eventually. There's only a couple of really one/two/three-of-a-kind items out there. When you think of it, the collectors community is really, really small. Only a handful of people are in the market for the items you're talking about.

Hehehehe, I know what you're talking about. It's better to relax though. If you're patient enough almost every single game will be available mulitiple times.
After being frustrated many times, I've found that the frustration of not being able to get a game only lasts that long. In fact, I'd say that not being able to get everything you want is one of the fun parts of collecting. If you could just go out and get everything... there's no fun in that!

If you have a screenshot of Video Gems' Steeplechase, maybe you can post it here, so that we can compare it? BTW, how did you get the screenshot, if you don't have the game? Were there any catalogs included with the other Video Gems games?
I have the game (just the cart though). It's a one-player game, for use with the joystick controller (at least, that's what the label says).

I agree, but having respect for each other's opinions does not mean anything goes, i.e. any opinion is as good as any other...
