  1. oops, when i was talking about the flashback, i was meaning that hardware based emulators having to compete with the likes of the free to download software based emulators...i.e pcae, stella, emu7800/prosystem or altirra/rainbow etc
  2. If i recall correctly, the original concept of the xbox was meant to soldify the pc as a gaming platform and to a certain extent it has sort of worked in some areas even if the pc as a gaming platform isn't as well supported as the 360/ps3/wiiwii etc etc Perhaps someone like Atari should invest in something along the lines of OUYA as a way and means of getting back into the hardware market (even if it is using a linux based o/s), better something along the lines of ouya then trotting out another hardware based emulator like flashback, after all you can only flog a dead horse so many times before people just get pigsick of hardware based emulators (considering that they have to compete with the free to download market where the free to download markets product is better quality (i.e the emulation of said system is more accurate or spot on)
  3. You people missed one out, i think it was done by a french publisher game was called steel or high steel, if i recall correctly it was the first game released that used the ste's enhanced capabilities
  4. I guess you could say that Mssrs Bak and Smithson 'cheated' then by using unchartered regions of the st hardware or failing that, software based hardware trickery...like the little tricks they presently do/use on the A8 and c64 as mentioned on a million and one atari/c64 sites, including this one
  5. Just noticed his post in the thread about the 'C' language welcome aboard Mr Crawford, I hope you enjoy your stay here at Atariage (i am guessing that you are THE Chris Crawford perhaps you can give us a better insight in what it was like as a programmer working for the big A And perhaps a story or two about the development of Eastern Front and a similar game using the same engine/logic, legionaire What was your opinion of the other 'star' programmers at the big A, especially those that were working on the portovers from coin op Is it also not true that you helped start up APX (which emanated from another software concept that was already existing within the big A)
  6. Well considering that most of the programmers within the atari 8bit section are mostly assembler programmers and considering and some on them and other programmers that frequent the a8 section also program in C or C++ this was largely aimed at them Going by your questioning of my post in the first place, i am guessing/assuming that you had a problem with it, therefore i suggest you contact the people behind this site and request that they move the post/thread to the appropriate section
  7. I think the people that programmed the st version of GGS1 should have hired steve bak....he knows a thing or three about smooth scrolling on a pre ste (or failing that wayne smithson, who programmed some of the st psygnosis games including anarchy) looks interesting though
  8. you probably want to mention this in the A8/atari 8bit forum (or the 5200 section), you might get a better response there, since those forums seem to be a little more 'active'
  9. Dont you mean shekana Andy...they were the first importers of the pc engine in london (if you're referring to tottenham court road that is) I think shekana also stocked the 'official' pal version of pc engine (as made by micro media with NEC's blessings apparently) And according to yell.com shekana are still going but they moved to wood green (just past tottenham) Me thinks that andymoo and tmr used to work for the likes of gremlin/usg/ocean etc or some other uk software house (seeming as though they are mostly c64 users)
  10. Seeming as though these days probably 95 or 100 percent of every game or non game program you see on the software shelves or that you download is written in c (or c++), has the end come for traditional heavyweight coding languages like assembler or ML/MC I guess though the C (or C++) will still be the hot language in say 100 years time since it pretty much pioneered the concept of 'scripting' languages, like most web based languages i.e java, asp, html, php etc) as well as the likes of python or Boo (which i also understand originated on unix/linux based systems) though i guess that compared to the likes of assmbler (or ML/MC) C/C++ does have the advantage of being totally code transferable/transportable, i.e you can run the same program (with minor changes) on say an a8 using c and transfer/transport the code and have it run (with minor changes) to say an amiga, pc, mac or that modern gaming cack, whereas with assember you would firstly need to know the equivalent instructions on the machine/system you wanted to port/convert the program over to I am guessing that the likes if C/C++ started overtaking the likes of assembler/or ML/MC etc as the games or software industries preferred programing/coding langauge at about the same time that games development/publishing had it's seismic shift away from computers to gaming/mobile gaming systems, which if i recall rightly started in the mid 90's (i.e about the same time the saturn/n64 and playstation were launched), since most of the games development prior to those systems was largely done using assembler, even if the odd jaguar or snes/md or lynx game were coded in c, the majority were still coded in assembler The question is though, is c/c++ a better development tool/system then the likes of assmbler. is it easier to learn...and i guess with better support for the likes of c/c++ compared to say assmebler, online it's a lot easier and quicker to get programming in the likes of c/c++ since there's probably a lot more material available online as well as offline for the likes of c/c++ i think the likes of assembler (or ml/mc) will be hard pushed to try and regain it's former glory and become again the preeminent programming language of choice like it once was
  11. Well, if Mr Crowther liked the A8 that much, why didn't he get of his big behind and learn to program on it....and perhaps gremlin might have had a few more games to throw at A8 owners/users Thsi thread kind of reminds me of something i think was attributed to David Braben (of elite fame) when someone claimed that he (braben) said that he wanted an atari 8bit version of elite done If that was even true then perhaps David would have programmed elite on the A8 instead of the BBC/Acorn systems (i think though his first game on the Archie was slightly better then elite...i.e Zarch (or virus if your an st/amiga user)
  12. How's progress on Elite going...or is that a 'dead project'...it's a nice demo though I see that you seem to be more interested on 5200 games or at least 5200 portovers/conversion
  13. how do i 'create an account'

    1. Austin

      Austin

Click that big red "X" at the top-right corner of your browser. That should do the trick.

      MrAtari2600

;O Alt F4 works too that is the keyboard shortcut to new account page!

And, if you don't want to have to re-register, be sure not to open AtariAge again until you get the e-mail saying that your account is active.

  14. griever, if you want to use joypads with vj, get the program called 'joy2key' or a similar program called 'xpadder', and just map the relevant keys to the joypad movements/buttons All you have to do firstly is remap (within vj) the best key setup for the emulator, i use the arrow keys p o and c x z then program a new config into joy2key with vj's keymap, so i can use proper joypads with vj joy2key is easier and friendlier to use then xpadder (could never quite figure out xpadder), only thing is the last english version of joy2key was version 3.79, everything since then is either in japanese or chinese
  15. Ziggy, what version of guantlet did you base the 5200 one on, the a8 or another version (if i remember rightly though the a8 version does use xl/xe bankswitching)
  16. [email protected] me, team GB just beat THE BRAZILIANS at football (and there wasn't a single man on the field, shows how crap the men play the game), bring on canada

    1. HatefulGravey

      HatefulGravey

They plan football in the Olympics? Freaking A, I have been missing out!

  17. link only http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcforum/showthread.php?31057-Ataritel-LUMA-Video-Phone-by-the-Atari-offshoot-have-two-nearly-new-in-the-box Shame that atari didn't have the wherefor all to get these into the market Can't think of one good reason why atari bothered selling the division to mitsubishi, since when had mitsubishi had anything to do with telecommunications, probably would have done better if they'd sold ataritel to someone like AT&T or bell labs or failing that DT or BT
  18. well i guess it will be kicking of in a few hours over in stratford (just east of me) apparently they had part of the olympic torch relay running past upper street and rosebery avenue, just 5/10 minutes from me....how nice

  19. interesting, i thought the 2600 used a cutdown version of the 6502 namely the 6507 (which is also in the 1050 drive) and unless i am muistaken the NES used a 3rd party variant of the 6502 (the 2a03 or 2a07 i believe) which ran slightly slower then the atari versions of 6502 and 6502c proccessors Wan't it said that the 6502 was the risc processor of it's day, compared to the likes of z80 or 8080/8086/8
  20. I just came face to face with part of the 'infamous' (depending on your perspective) 'olympic lanes' (or part of the ORN/Olympic route network), it runs just outside hotel russell in russell square here in town, just as well the olympics are on during the school summer hols

    1. Dr Do

      Dr Do

Fortunately there's none of that olympic lane tomfoolery up here where the football is. I don't envy you Londoners though, it's hard enough driving round the city as it is!

  21. chris, does real joypad support mean you don't need that upjoy proggie, since i recall the original rainbow emu (v1.36) required upjoy if you wanted to use joypads
  22. c'mon bradley wiggins, the TDF is yours
