Atari XE vs. C64... And the winner is:
carmel_andrews replied to twh/f2's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Have you ever tried loading a c64 game from disk (without using any mod'd loaders or AR type cartridges), it's almost as fast as loading an A8 game from cassette snigger snigger -
Yes, these games have been doing the rounds FOR YEARS as 'Pirated' or Copies but not originals or in their original media format (be it disk/cart etc), with original programmers code/gfx etc) like i said, the games themselves never were officially released as such... that was the point i was trying to make

The only reason why Atari didn't release the panther is because Atari didn't have the funds to mass manufacture and market both the Panther and Jaguar, as Atari had just stopped manuf. and marketing the 8bit computers/games systems (incl. lynx) and were about to pull the plug on the ST/falcon etc platforms Suffice it to say that the hardware for panther/jaguar was designed by the same British company that also designed the hardware for MGT's Sam Coupe, this system became famous because the computer supported a built in 'emulator' that allowed you to play speecy games (it was the first system released to sport such a feature)

Albert... hello there I'm interested as to how you got the code for 'Jr Pacman' and 'Last Starfighter', as these games were never 'officially' released, did some kind sole at ATARI pity you and turn the code over to you Please... spill the heinz

Sprite Routine Development (for Atari 8bit)
carmel_andrews replied to analmux's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
i don't know if this is relevant but, there were a series of article on 'Atari Graphics' in the Database version if Atari User magazine, they even had a listing for displaying multiple sprites (PMG) on a single screen, the article claimed at least 80 sprites (PMG), the series of Articles were by Richard Vanner i thinkx.. i don't know though, if the sprites used were software or hardware generated -
the only one i remember was the midland software library, they used to advertise regularly in 'atari user' (database)

2 projects - c= sid into ATARI XL/XE
carmel_andrews replied to St(r)yker's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Are you going to try and use the Sid chip version that was going to be used in the unreleased C65, the so called 'Stereo SID' -
that's an improvement on from what i've seen, and anyway not every cartridge was released in all markets... i.e UK/EU or US, so my guess was around about right I suppose of course, as with anything relating to Atari, the US markets got the majority of cart releases out there (official releases of course)

1200 Video Upgrade or What I Did This WE
carmel_andrews replied to gcude's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
i would hardly have thought so as the AUG member that i made reference to, did the 1200 mod himself way back in the mid 80's (apparently the 1200 he had was one of the last of the production line, jammy so and so), so i guess that the 1200 mod i made reference to predates Nir Dary's efforts, not that i wish to denigrate mr dary's efforts as they are very commendable and benefits A8 users everywhere) MSG TO NIR DARY, .... WAKEY WAKEY, RISE AND SHINE, ARE YOU IN THE LAND OR THE LIVING OR IN THE LAND OF NOD -
Anyway, according to the various list for A8 carts available on the internet there dosent seem to be more then 150-175 cart's released for the A8, and not that many proto's, as after 1984 not many companies were doing A8 carts

1200 Video Upgrade or What I Did This WE
carmel_andrews replied to gcude's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I seem to remember one of the members of my old AUG telling me of a 'homebrew' tv/video mod for the 1200 series to allow it to run on PAL TV's (as 1200's were only designed to run on NTSC (US) telelvisions, unfortunately he never let on about how he did it, all i know is that it involved hacking parts from a UK/EU designed 6/800xl and sticking it in a 1200 (US), he/they didn't print any schematic/designs on how it was done, unfortunately i havent spoken to him for years... but it should be a sinch/doddle etc, for all you 'olde tyme' hardware hack dudes/dudettes out there in atariland -
Dataosft's Pacman only came about once Atari's licencing deal with namco ran it's course (circa 1984/5) Additionally datasoft's version of pacman only made it to cassette and disk (not cart) like Atari's version (datasoft's version had the 'infamous' U.S.G scrolly type advertising (where most of the titles mentioned were never going to be released anyway) Additionally there were 2 or 3 different versions of dig dug (again datasoft/atari respectively) and two versions of pole position

nothing personal andy/plastron, but i'd rather not go anywhere near ebay, thanks all the same, looks like i'll be sticking to using pc emulators and lot my LOVERLY a8 gear
-
Yes!, but it means finding some one in the UK that knows how to fit happy upgrades, which is why i rather have a drive with one built in, so that i'm not paying to have it fitted and also travel expenses on top (which add's to the price of the drive essentially), as i know of no one in london that services or repairs A8 gear In regards to the 2 in 1 or 3 in 1 pc-atari interfaces/cables, that, i will definately be int. in, but only once i've got my 1050's in hand and up and running Steve, it would be nice if you forwarded me your email address so as to contact you as and when i get me hand's on a 1050 or 2 (not really interested in a 551), so as to acquiring the above pc-atari interfaces/cables that you say do build/supply (is the software you supply with the cable/interfaces the full and latest versions, or is it shareware/crippled version)
-
Point taken... however as you probably realize, i'm not going thru ebay, and therefore paying their over inflated prices, that's why i'm going direct, easier and cheaper, and less chance of getting stung (unlike the experiences that quite a few people have had on ebay)

Ah.. I see, But did the 1200 have the old 4/800 bank switch (d800 if mem. serves me right) or the xl/xe bank switch at d301, and were the 1200 o/s changes purely cosmetic (compared to the other xl's) or were the other xl o/s's changed wholesale

Warners Atari didn't have the money to mass produce the 7800 on demand, as Warners themselves apparently were getting a lot of heat from their shareholders and basically initially decided to stop bank rolling Atari (even though Atari's revenues during the inital stages of the video game crash, totalled more then the entire income/revenues from warners other divisions (put together) and then some, and that's not including Atari's properties and assets, in addition shareholders hads basically given the warners managment an ultimatum of 'getting shot ' of Atari or else We all know what happened there on in The tramiel Atari simply had no interest in the 7800, suffice it to say, they where even threatening to 'somehow' incorporate the 7800 hardware into the A8 (atari 8bit), tramiel only went back to the 7800 when he and his cronies ballsed up or [email protected]**** up on the Amiga deal, which is why the Warner's and tramiel versions of the 7800 are different, tramiel only wanted the 7800 hardware as a 'basic' games system that could'nt be upgraded, completely different to the Warners/GCC 7800 design Essentially, the 7800 died before it come to market initially (in 1983/4)

so, no atari's or atari dd's used then... just an old PC

Ah!!! Attack of the aussies, or is he a kiwi (dressed up as an aussie) Only joking shawn... being watching too much neighbours (on the bbc), looks as though australia is taking over the US when it comes to selling down market or low end soap opera's to british tv broadcasters (i'm sure that you remember the term 'couch potato', although that in no way describes my particular disposition) And lastly, a prediction for the forthcoming ashes series, england to win 2-1, 1 drawn and one cancelled due to the rain (not that it's raining at the mo)
-
do you have the atari connected to this sio-pc thru the pc/mac (if that's possible), or just an atari dd

45, according to Yahoo UK & I, looks as though i was right, something to do with Al-Qaeda

I'm perfectly OK and i'm located between Kings cross and Russell Square, yes i did here a few fire engines and police sirens sounding off but nothing more then usual Just as well it didn't happen yesterday during the olympics decision, that would have put a damp squib on things I'm trying to sratch my head because if this has something to do with the G8 thing, then why are them bombing/attacking london (apart from the fact that it represents a more high profile target) why aren't they attacking/bombing edinburgh/gleneagles, thats essentially near to the location where the event (the G8) is being held... surely it would make more sense (not that i'd want edinburgh/gleneagles to be attacked in this fashion) the alternative scenario being that this is the work of some disparate terrorist group with some affiliation/association with Al Qaeda, or that Al Qaeda is rearing their ugly head again, or of course some disparate islamic extremist group is waging Iraq's war in London

Would i be right in saying that 16k carts very rarely used bank switching anyway, as pitfall 2 was only 16k if mem. serves me right, i suppose a better question would be, how many 16k cart's used bank switching? I do remember when i tried to convert the original cart to binary file, i think it had some s/w protection that detected if a cartridge was inserted , and that it wouldn't display the graphics properly, all you got was a blank screen,
