  1. Is it true that microsoft named a version of windows 8 after AA's 'Random Terrain' (RT)

    1. Gemintronic

      Gemintronic

Controlled Randomness is why every BSOD happens. That's all the proof I need.

  2. What i wouldn't mind knowing is the following Why didn't Atari consider plug in memory modules for the XL series (or was the XL series designed as a closed system from the word go) Weird thing is Atari did the reverse when it came to the ST/STE Lastly would it have been possible for Atari to implement an XL/XE like bank switch for the 800/400 and get more memory per bank switch (16k as opposed to 4k)
  3. Wasn't there a bit of controversy over the MD/Genesis 'easter egg' in Mortal Kombat (So much so that nintendo tried to video it just to show that it's games were not as violent)
  4. Rain....?, Remember that

    1. Fixitguy74

      Fixitguy74

No, please tell me more about this 'Rain' you speak of.

  5. Please give me this list, so i can see if I still have them books you are looking for
  6. sounds like Barnes and Noble are about to bite the dust.... http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2013/07/once-bully-barnes-noble-becomes-victim/67658/ Lets hope WATERSTONES follow suit (especially after what they did to Dillons)

  7. I guess by that token your'e a fan of the ST version of Giana Sisters (uses the same scrolling technique as Bros), and in my book the ST version was the worst of the original 3 (the amoeba and c64 versions being the other 2)
  8. One suspects that info..... wants to dig it's own grave and bury Atari along with it, in regards to Wgungfu's last post (OK so we won't get the 'viking burial' we asked for but this is the next best thing)
  9. only bring this up after seeing a fan based remake for the PC (obviously updated using modern pc gfx) http://www.oolite.org/ Seeming as though, they already have launched or programed several revisions (i think i already have 3 or 4) I am guessing that Mssrs Braben/Bell hadn't hounded them out of existence with C&D notices Even if Mark doesn't want to reboot/restart what he already did, perhaps he can hand over any work he did do to someone able to finish the job obviosly you don't call it Elite, call it something like Star Traiders that way you're hardly going to run into the likes of Braben/bell suing the arse of you
  10. I guess i am missing something here, whats the point of buying up IP if your not going to do much with it (apart from stopping other people using the IP for their own use, like fan based games) and considering that Atari has consistently lost money on whatever it's been doing since info.... took ownership, did Atari actually make any money on the modern IP's, one suspects not Since if it was making money on the modern IP's and people weren't SLATING the releases (cue STAR RAIDERS), it wouldn't need to keep relaunching it's classic IP and updating the content for mobile platforms, since it would be making franchises of the modern IP it already had
  11. Sorry if this has already been asked but do rechargeable battetries work in the lynx (never got around to using batts since i only played my lynx at home, so i just used the ac/dc adapter instead)
  12. Any chance of a PAL version (since 5200 was NTSC only) also how about an updated version that has XL/XE like bank switching, which means bigger games and also it would be a lot easier to port XL/XE specific games to the 5200, like crownland, yoomp and similar
  13. We are not worthy (Wayne's world) Thats nintendo/Microshaft for you, since if i recall rightly, Ultimate evolved into rare which nintendo partially invested in then got bought out by Microshaft Doesn't Chris Stamper (one of the co founders of rare/ultimate) have ANY interest in the classic systems (especially the speccy) or is he only in the gaming biz for the money/glory
  14. For those that don't recall APX and what it was, it was Atari's attempt at 'commercialising' PD/user written software and getting it distributed via retail (mainly Atari stockists and dealers), according to some article i saw about the beginings of APX, it evolved from a internal software acquisition program at Atari called ASAP (apparently Chris Crawford, Mr Eastern Front was one of the co founders, along with Fred Thorlin) Anyway I was reading the well known commodore history book 'Home Computer Wars' and somewhere in the book it mentioned that one of Commodore UK's management had instigated a similar software marketing/distribution program to APX for the commodore PET systems, it didn't mention if the service/system was used for Vic20 or C64, since the Manager responsible for the program got transfered to Commodore International to work on better advertising and marketing programs and also to try and replicate his software marketing and distribution program in North America/US And someone here on a thread about Apple II's seemed to infer that Apple also had a similar concept to APX, Apparently Apple dealers/stockists had a catalogue of several thousand PD/User written programs that Apple had acquired for their APX like service And to extend it slightly according to the introduction to the APX section in it's magazine, ANTIC (the people that eventually bought the rights to the APX content) mentioned that IBM had a similar concept but wasn't as successful Can anyone add anything to the APX like concept that both commodore and Apple instigated, what were the commodore/Apple services called how successful were they and did the commodore version of APX also include the Vic20 and C64 or was it limited to just the PET
  15. Nice to see a few old school crackers/hackers here (Mr Zipp, Bacardi being the only ones i've heard of) ofviously i'll have to go through my old boot menu's when I get home to see if i have anything by 'chilly willy' and co What one wouldn't give to have Rob C or yogi/Glenn 5200, NAPO or homesoft frequenting the forums
  16. Did you do any more cracks/hacks other then firebirds 'extirpator' (a so-so shooter) that is the only one of yours that i've seen
  17. Only bought this up after seeing I O (Into Oblivion) v1.0 (a remake of the classic c64 sidescroller shoot em up from firebird (who are now ATARI) and also T2002 (a remake of the classic c64/amiga run & jump shooter 'Turrican') Others I've seen and played include Boogaboo the flea (from the Quicksilva, sinclair original) Oolite (a remake of the classic Braben/Bell Acornsoft game) Gryzor/Contra (several remakes) Prototype/PrototypeII (supposedly based on the classic IREM side scroller shooter 'R-Type') Hurrican (an updated version of Turrican) Jet Set Willy/Manic Miner (Various...or should that be 'too many' remakes, I've seen about a dozen) Miner 2049r/Miner 2049r again (only played the later, not the former), a remake of Mr Hogues famous Atari/tandy platform game (apparently the first platform game available for home play not based on a coin op game, since DK was released for home play before Miner was released) Space Taxi...I do have the pc (windoze) version not played it though, apparently a remake of a v. famous c64 game Gridwars....Lovely game, a remake of some 3D arena shooter called 'geometry wars' (never heard of it) which is basically a robotron type game Privateer...a community based remake of 'wing commander' (looks interesting) Leaderboard (Apparently this has been remade for windows PC's, requires an internet connection though, not sure if this is somewhat related to the classic USG/Access c64/atari original, or if they simply just borrowed the name since it's a golf sim) oneonlinegames.com has a fairly sizeable collection of fan based super mario/sonic remakes (obviously there are more mario remakes then sonic, on that site at least) Fractulas, again i have the downloaded file just havent got around to playing it....A remake of probably Lucasfilms best Atari/c64 game (shame that the games publisher of the original is no more) I believe someone did do a remake of Ballblazer....Just haven't seen it yet Cybernoid II....a remake of one of Hewson consultant's better sinclair/c64 games (only played about 5 minutes of it, looks bloody good though) Caiman Soccer...A remake of Sensi soccer/Kick off (without a doubt 2 of the best ever soccer/footy sims ever released on computer or games machine...sorry PES and the Fifa cack just don't do it for me (they look like dressed up versions of Thorn EMI soccer) Classic retro remakes claim that someone did a remake of English software's 'Jet Boot Jack' (if your'e a long time Atari/c64 gamer this was probably their best game) Futuridium/Uridium...The later is just a PC version of the c64 graftgold original (i.e has the same gfx.sonix as the c64 version) the former is a 3Dised version of the c64 graftgold game the one i have though seems to have a bug in it (you can't fire or bomb anything)...good gfx though Conrad Dangerous...A fan based remake of Rick Dangerous Rick Dangerous I&II, going by the screenshots they seem identical to the ST/Amoeba versions (just haven't got around to playing them) Zub (a remake of an el cheapo Mastertronic sinclair game....never saw the original so can't really say much about the PC version) Xenon 2000/Xenon II Megablast, the later seems to be a full version of the classic Bitmap brothers ST/Amoeba game (with exactly the same gfx, though the sound is a little tiny (i could could just about hear it) the former was a giveaway for readers of PC format magazine (apparently written by the bitmaps themselves, not sure if it's the full game though) Matilda Castillo...A remake/fan based 'Ghouls and Ghosts'/Ghosts & Goblins type game I have seen a couple or 3 'Castlevania' remakes just can't recall the names of 2 of them, the one i have played was called 'CastlevaniaDC' and one that i saw a video of seems to be a 3Dised version set in a forward scrolling world Ghouls and Ghosts remix...remake and looks exactly as it played on the PC engine (the best of the home versions, computer or gaming system)...same goes for the other game Ghosts and Goblins (just slightly retouched with modern gfx) Bruce Lee, haven't seen it but a remake of a Datasoft Atari/c64 game Giana sisters, giana returns....Fan based remakes/updates of the 'naughty' RA mario clone/rip off (naughty, since RA were forced into removing the game from the market due to similarities with a certain nintendo game) Horace goes skiing and others of the Horace series (a remake of beam software's seires of Sinclair games) .....Anyone with any more
  18. The only game i've heard of in that list is battlezone...,most of that IP i am guessing is what can only be regard as 'modern gaming content', so in essense, if that was the 'bulk' of atari's modern gaming content IP, then I guess most of it has gone to new homes If what someone else said here is true (i.e. the classic/retro IP sale is still to happen), what will that leave Atari with exactly, unless Atari are yet again going to get into new markets, produce new content etc
  19. I did post my collection of books i was selling some time ago here....got no replies, let me know if you see anything your'e looking for (can't find the linky buty it should still be there)
  20. Have a nice sleep Mr Price....any chance though (since you've obviously re-found some enthusiasm for classic computing in the A8) that you could do some sort of continuation or reboot of A.R (after all, it seemed to have worked for Dr. Who, so why not A.R) In regards to Tail of beta Lyrae though, was that released before or After English Software's 'Air Strike' which was also one of the first 'scramble' clones, though your scramble clone seems a bit more polished
  21. Does Atari count as American (even though a french company ultimately owns it)
  22. I didn't buy the game but I saw an Atari ST version of 'Great Giana Sisters' in original box/packaging in a second hand (used) games shop in Notting Hill for 20 GBP (If only I'd recalled that RA had been forced by Nintendo to remove ALL versions of the game from the market) Thats probably the closest i've ever come to owning a 'rarity' (apart from the fact that my older brother had an original c64 disk version)
  23. Did CV and Co. help out (as in provide technical info/documentation to assist with programming the patch) with patching the MESS 7800 emulation to work with XM
  24. Welcome to AtariAge Mr Price, nice to see another famous 'old school' game coder/designer joining in the fun at AtariAge (assuming ofcourse you are THE Philip Price) Just one question though, according to various sources (the Wikip being one of them) claimed that there was a 'falling out' between you and Datasoft (who marketed/published Alternate reality) because you wanted all six parts of the alternate reality series packaged as one game whereas Datasoft saw things differently and wanted the 6 parts of the game to be packaged as separate games/programs (which is why the city and the dungeon are packaged as two seperate games) Any chance you could clear this one up once and of all and also possibly if you still have the source code or disks, release the other 4 parts that Datasoft passed up on
  25. Linky only http://uk.news.yahoo.com/ouya-launch-second-kickstarter-campaign-time-encourage-games-132500550.html#hAlekbR Question is, why didn't they do this when they did the original kickstarter thing, surely they would have known that people will only buy a games system if it's well supported with good quality games or non games software Or perhaps the simply assumed that since Android is Linux, people will just jump at the chance of developing games/non games content for a 'viable' games system I think the people behind Ouya just didn't learn from history, remember 3DO, they had lots of interest from the developers and publishers BEFORE the console launched, but when it got onto the market projects were cancelled or simply the devs/publishers switched tracks to support the likes of Sega/nintendo/Sony etc The point being that 10000 people downloading some SDK, doesn't equate to 10000 people pledging software support for the system, after all, how many people have say downloaded free versions of Unity3d or blender or Unreal DK and equate that to how many good quality games have actually reached the market or been released that were designed using these game design/dev kits My guess is, out of the 10000 people that downloaded the SDK, i'd say just over 1 percent are actually doing something or anything with it....if those figures are anything to go by that ain't going to help the console or the company in the long run
