Collecting Manuals, Path to Satisfaction? Or Disappointment?
RamrodHare replied to MeatWithGravy's topic in Atari 2600
For me, collecting is like an addiction. I give myself two choices, either I get a complete collection or I get rid of what I have. I've learned from years of experience that once I complete a collection, I lose interest in it. Since I have very little money to spend, I find it better to sell partial collections of things, than to save up and hunt down more things I really don't need. I find I can part with most items I have, provided I don't have some emotional connection to them. I got a lot of 2600 manuals when I got most of my Atari stuff. It was nice having them, but knowing that I can download digital copies of them, it seemed crazy to have the physical ones taking up space when there were people out there who would appreciate them. I'd like to think that one day I'll get over the need for material things, but that's just wishful thinking. The reality is that one day I may no longer have any material things, but it won't be by choice. -
yeah, all you have to do is contact Albert.

If you are feeling generous, you can mail me the crappy joysticks. I have a lot of spare parts and I enjoy fixing up random joysticks. Worst case scenario, I might be able to salvage a few more parts from them. Edit: Just saw these are the Cirka77 Joysticks. I'd seriously like to have them if you are thinking of throwing them away.

It sounds like your cartridge connector and carts might just need cleaning. It could still be a chip issue though. If they are socketed, go ahead and try reseating them. While you have it apart, check the board for bad solder joints too. If you can afford it, you might want to look into getting a spare 2600, just in case this one ends up needing repairs down the road. Your issues probably aren't related to the voltage regulator or the caps, but if those haven't been replaced, that's something you might consider, since those parts all have a limited life span. If you are familiar with soldering, it's really easy to replace those and they don't cost hardly anything.
-
That's going to depend on your model and the board revision. Some are socketed, some aren't. Best way to find out is to take it apart.

I'm gonna go with what others have said. It looks like there's an issue with your Atari. I've seen consoles that would only act up on one game, but get worse over time until one of the chips had to be replaced.

From the sounds of it, your game is going to be different enough. There's no need to worry. What you are basically doing is creating an original game, inspired by Ram It. you aren't infringing on any intellectual rights by doing so.

Very interesting indeed...

Looking for some info from the emulation experts here.
RamrodHare replied to RamrodHare's topic in Emulation
This thread is a little old, but I thought it might be best to revive it than to start another one that would be almost identical. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a newer version of Stella, ported to the Android. The one that's availible doesn't support some games and I didn't know if there was a better version floating around that I hadn't found or not. -

Will a 2600 Jr short rainbow motherboard fit in a long rainbow case?
RamrodHare replied to azure's topic in Atari 2600
I can't say I'm 100% sure, but I think the rainbow on the nameplate is the only difference. -
It's free and I already called dibs!

OK, In your other topic, you said- "I recently snagged an original wood grain 2600 at an estate sale, with box, manual, tv box, etc." Now you say you found it in the attic? You also say you have a Vader, but in your other thread you said you only have Activision Hockey. So, what do you play on your Vader? I was thinking about trying to come up with the money to buy this, after our PMs about it, but, these discrepancies worry me. I wish you luck on your sale, but I'm no longer interested.

Since you are giving it away, I'll take it. Also, nice first post.

I have a great idea. The cart should also be able to make Tacos!

I'll be keeping an eye on this. It looks cool so far.

$30 sounds like a good price to me.

Fishing Derby. If there was one game I'd like to see have a decent AI, it's Combat. I love playing it, but it's very rare for me to ever have anyone willing to play against me. Not that I'm good, it's just there's never anyone else here.

atari181 may be right. It's possible that he just doesn't understand how the Harmony works. However, I've been seeing a lot of posts on game forums where people are too lazy to hunt down the games they want. Like they are somehow entitled to have everything handed to them without having to do anything on their own. I'm not saying that's what's happening in this case, but it has become more common lately.

So, it's too much "work" to download a full rom set and put it on a micro SD card to play on the Harmony Encore? If that's the case, how do you even manage to get out of bed in the morning? As far as the legality, If it worries you that much, then just buy all the games on actual carts. Once the card is loaded with all the roms, it's not a big deal to add a new homebrew when it comes out. I feel like you are trying to reinvent the wheel and that's not going to happen. People are perfectly happy with the Harmony Encore and there's no reason why they shouldn't be. You're trying to convince people there's a problem when there isn't one.

I wanted to come back to this thread and post some news. Firmware 2.05 is out. There have been quite a few improvements made since 1.77, which is what I was running. Now games are actually drag & drop. The save patching takes place on the cart now. From what I can tell, it also seems to patch the games that use the RTC. There's also hotkeys for soft and hard resets, and a sleep mode. I won't be able to test out the new firmware for a few days, since I have to go through my GBA files and get rid of duplicates and pre-patched games. I don't know how long that will take. Now that I don't need the EZ-client program, I can put my GBA files on my tablet and work on them in my spare time. I had planned on adding the entire GBA library to a micro SD card, but the thought of patching and renaming was holding me back. The thought of having new and improved firmware has me motivated. Once I get my GBA library organized, I can also transfer it straight to my PSP too. I'll post again once I get it finished to let everyone know my thoughts on the new firmware.

The Harmony Encore already has all the games availible at once. You just download a complete set and put them on the SD card and there they are, ready to play.

Porting the newest version of Stella to the PSP.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't considered the hardware limitations of the PSP. Now I can stop wondering why no one had updated it. -
Porting the newest version of Stella to the PSP.
RamrodHare replied to RamrodHare's topic in Emulation
That's what I'm using right now too. I've ran into probably 10 games that don't work. It wouldn't be much of an issue if it weren't that half of those were games I really love. I know there's been a massive amount of progress made on Stella since then. So, if there was a way to just update PSP2600 to the newest version of Stella, compatibility would be a lot better for some of the homebrews made since 2009. I'm guessing there's a lot of work involved and that's the reason no one has done it yet. It reminds me of the situation with the Gameboy Color emulators for PSP. The most sought after GBC game is Shantae, but every emulator has an issue with the graphics getting scrambled up when the screen changes. I feel like someone would have fixed that by now, but no one has. That makes me think there's something going on that must be pretty hard to fix. I can play Shantae on my Gameboy Micro, so it's not a big deal, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I browsed through some PSP forums and some emulator forums last night looking to any info that might be helpful as far as PSP2600 updates or source code, but I came up empty handed.
