  1. That's pretty cool, didn't realize there were demos on the VIC! Looks like they were doing raster interrupts in it, but the VIC doesn't have raster interrupts... :ponder: Probably doing timer interrupts to simulate raster interrupts.

EDIT: Yep, VIC raster interrupts are simulated by using interrupts on 2 timers - Making stable raster routines (C64 and VIC-20)

On the VIC-20, there is no Raster interrupt feature in the video chip. All you can do is to use a timer for generating raster interrupts. And if you use two timers running at a constant phase difference, you can get full synchronization. The first timer generates the raster interrupt, and the second timer, the auxiliary timer, tells the raster routine where it is running.

This is probably as advanced as simulated raster interrupts gets on the VIC-20, based on Marko Makela's routine(!), runs fine in winvice in unexpanded mode: happyhour.zip (Slightly off topic maybe, but I still find it interesting to compare demos between the VCS and VIC-20...)

  2. To my limited music/sound capabilities, this sounds pretty good. I do recall a thread about the sound somewhere; I will have to find it and see what was done back then. Does this music kit only require one call per frame?

    Cheers

    A

Yes, it's one call per frame only. SpiceWare specified the memory requirements much better than I could, I only remembered the three persistent bytes part of it. I'm not a very good 6502 programmer (I program both C and PL/SQL professionally, though) but my feeling is that Paul Slocum's music driver deserves much more attention than it has received so far.

  3. Hi! It was some time ago, but this was my attempt (back in 2005) using Paul Slocums music kit v2.0.

I think I'd really like to go with original music for Atari 2600 Boulder Dash®. I know this has been discussed on threads earlier, but I'd like to start this thread to call for anyone interested in contributing to the music and sound side of this project to contact me, or post examples here. What I'd be looking for is someone to independantly implement the Boulder Dash theme on the '2600 as close as possible to the original.

The conditions are that the music must be a single call per frame, not be prohibitively time-using. More limits to be posted if/when they show up and/or I remember them.

Reward, as such, would be credit for sound and music in the final package (onscreen if this is done for programmers), at the very least in the manuals, and two production cartridges (if it ever gets this far).

I'd like to open up this thread to discussions/opinions on the music side of things -- including sound effects.

  4. Sounds more in tune than anything else before on the 2600!

Not that it could do anything about First Star's copyright policy, but it would nonetheless be interesting to hear what the Boulder Dash title tune would sound like using this technique. (If I remember right, Andrew Davie really wanted it to be implemented in a 'softsynth' version...)

This was my attempt at a chip version:

Another version. This one has different options for the difficulty switches and for color/BW. Have fun, and let me know what switch combinations you like best.

  5. You mean this song?

    Hi,

great musics! My first hope was that it was the music of "Druid II", because that one always reminds me of my old days being a member of the C64 group FAIRLIGHT. Maybe someone remembers that old intro with the classic music...

I'm always searching for additional music for my new 2600 games... but I'd prefer original and dedicated music instead of conversions of copyrighted tunes.

Thanks and keep up the good work,

    Simon

  6. Thanks for the positive comments! Here's a third one that I made when I was up to it. Some of you might remember Silkworm (a minor hit on the Amiga, among other platforms). Also, I'd like to add, this wouldn't have been possible without Paul Slocums excellent Music Kit v2.0.

  7. Being an old fan of Thrust I just had to download it and try it out. While Thrust Xtreme indeed has good visuals making the Atari 2600 version look really blocky when you switch between the two I still find that the Atari 2600 version is far better in terms of playability. The controls are much tighter and that matters in a game like this. (Also, I find the sound more suitable to the game in the Atari 2600 version.)

  8. I would buy one or more units straight away! (Don't care about the FB3). Build quality is important, though. I would prefer a FB2 portable with a really high quality game pad (like the original NES controller for example) to a cheaper unit of lower quality. Maybe there could be a special Deluxe version?

Have a question for everyone -

Would everyone be happy if there were a FB2 Portable handheld with 2.5" TFT and a USB connection to a PC to d/l games into it and perhaps push the FB3 back as a later release?

    Curt

  9. The Gameboy Color version of Asteroids is not that bad either, especially not the first zone... The B/W hack (called "Asteroids Arcade") for the 2600 is up there in the top league too...

    Regards,

    Moderntimes99

The 7800 version is by far the best official home port of Asteroids, in my humble opinion.

However, I think the best raster Asteroids-ish game period is a little one for classic MacOS called Maelstrom.

  10. Hi!

Just stumbled across an article mentioning the "Ratoc CompactFlash USB 1.1 Host Card For PDAs" on Tomshardware.com. (This card obviously adds a USB interface to a Pocket PC.)

Is there anyone having an idea how far off it would be to connect the Stelladaptor to such an interface? Would special drivers be required or is there any chance that it would work straight away being recognised as a "human interface input device"? And if there are drivers for it, how much work would it be to modify the PocketPC version of Stella to detect that it is present?

My Dell x50v + Stella + a joypad would make a very nice portable gaming platform...

    Moderntimes99

  11. Man Goes Down - Seems finished to me, maybe there is some debugging left to the AtariVox part??? (Don't have the AtariVox myself, but otherwise it seems 100% OK! Release candidate?)

Reflex - Seems finished as well!

NotBD - looked *very* promising... sad if copyright issues would stop it!

Conquest of Mars - Would love to see a PAL60 version of it...

    Regards,

    Moderntimes99

    EDIT Cybergoth: Pointless Fullquote deleted.

  12. I'll second Thrust+. I've been playing that like a fiend since I got it.

    Best... 2600... game... ever.

You can never get tired of discussing this topic, can you? :)

My "core" collection of "really" good 2600 games includes (in ranked order)...

    Thrust

    Klax

    Hero

    Real Sports Tennis

    Pitfall2

    Edtris

    Midnight Magic

    My Golf

    Defender2/Stargate

    JR Pac Man

  13. Moderntimes99, I'm in the process of writing a very thorough review of the GP2X. The problem is that the emulators are updated so frequently, that every time I get a good set of notes together, they are immediately obsolete. :)

Thanks for your very exhaustive review! The firmware and joypad issues makes me hesitate a bit. Installing software on the other hand does not make me afraid though... :-) If it only had a joypad just like the classic NES controller - then I would most likely go out and buy one straight ahead! Now it seems as if the best thing is to sit back and wait a little bit longer. Are there any news and/or rumours about future hardware revisions of the GP2X?

    Moderntimes99
