I went ahead and bought the Official Astrocity pad. It's surprisingly more comfortable than it looks, the D-pad has classic SEGA feel. Although, I still haven't given up trying to study how the lockout works.

Cool.  Do you need two pads for multiplayer on a tv?  Or can player one use the stick on the unit itself?

I picked up the arcade stick with the cabinet.  The stick is solidly made, hard to say 'well worth the money' as it is expensive, but I am still glad I bought it.  When the system was first announced I pre-ordered with the pad, as soon as the stick was announced about a month later it was a no brainer really, I cancelled the pad an stumped for the stick.  I left it a while before doing the exchange rate from yen to £, didn't need the fright.

When connected to a TV, can one player use the controls on the unit itself, and the 2nd player use the arcade stick?

Anyone have any luck finding a USB controller that works with the SEGA Astro City Mini cabinet?

So far, I've tested: Several wired official Nintendo Switch controllers, Wii-U pro (using USB cable), Sega Genesis Mini (3 button USA), Turbo Grafx 16 Mini, Playstation Classic, various 8BitDo controllers (via USB dongle), RetroFlag (SNES & Megadrive both using D-input & X-input modes), RetroBit SEGA Genesis 6 button (two wired [blue/pink], & one wireless [black] via dongle), Mocute, and a few other generic Chinese USB SNES/NES controllers ("Next" branding). None of them appear to be compatible. I also tried a couple Powerpoint style wireless USB pointers, & a Logitech keyboard (just for the shell of it).

As you can see from the extensive list above, I have quite a collection of USB controllers, and don't want to have to buy another if I can find an alternative. I also would prefer a SEGA Megadrive style over the Astro City controller for confort. I saw a YouTube video of someone using the Japanese Megadrive Mini 6 button USB controller, but seems suspicious to me as to why the North American 3 button or officially licensed 6 button controllers from RetroBit would not also be compatible.

I've also thought about disassembling my Astro cab to test the USB power/data lines to see if they receive proper voltage & such. I know this was the case with the Playstation Classic, (A resistor had to be swapped). Curious to me why no other controller is being recognized at all.

Sadly, from what I've read, the only controllers that work are:

    • The Official Astrocity Mini Pads
    • The Official Astrocity Mini Pads Sticks
    • The JP Megadrive Mini 6 button pads

Well I costed out a single device I got $23.03 That includes shipping from two different suppliers (digi-key and Jameco) (the third Aliexpress was free) Includes the cost for printing the two printed parts (case + sio plug) but doesn't include any cost for time or markup.

Ordering in bulk will reduce the shipping cost per unit but even then I don't think it's going to work out. I'd have to charge for all the labour to make it worth my while and that will bring the cost up to more than I think most people would be willing to pay.

Yeah what price would make sense?  Also what about selling a KIT with instructions, to reduce labor?  At a certain price point it could make more sense to go the FujiNet route, depending on what other stuff a user might want to do.

It’s not really plug and play at all via 850’s. MIDI Maze is written expecting MIDI-based networking, something the 850 cannot do. However, building your own modern MIDI Mate-equivalent device is really simple - @mytek’s website, which you’ve linked above - has the board design files, the schematic, the code and the bill of materials, which is pretty inexpensive.

Alternately, you can use a FujiNet device on each computer for the networking - these modern devices can emulate a MIDI Mate in their code.

Ah, so I am barking up the wrong tree.  Thanks!

  6. Hello and sorry if this has been answered before (I could not find this particular question answered via search).

Having tooled around in MIDI Maze with bots, it seems like live players would be much more fun, yet MIDI Mate interfaces are expensive, or require some DIY assembly beyond my skill set:

https://ataribits.weebly.com/midi.html (These seems really cool though!)

Considering Atari 850s are much less sought after, how hard is it to network two Atari 8-bits using two Atari 850s and an RS-232 cable for playing MIDI Maze?

Has anyone gotten it working, and -- assuming the various hardware is in working order -- is it as "plug and play" as it sounds?

    Thanks!

    Ben

  7. EDIT:  LOWER PRICES

Hi!  I need to cull my collection some!  Most items are in very good shape.  I’ve tried to describe any major blemishes, but please check the photos too.

Minimum order of $5. First come, first serve.  Shipping not included in price.

Please PM, if you see anything you want and thanks for looking!

    Cheers,
    Ben

  8. Amazing work Omega!  I always found the 2600 version of Venture to be kind of meh, but you've transformed the game into one of my favorite arcade conversions.  I'm really excited this is getting a cart release, it's a DAY ONE purchase for me!

    Cheers,

    Ben
