  1. Still, I would think for anyone not absolutely rabid about C64 usage, that $60 Brain device is probably the bee's knees :)

It's taken everything I've ever thrown at it game wise, including multi-load games (again, be sure it's set to Device 8) and the JiffyDOS chip loves it too :)

Does it only handle ide fixed games or can it accept software fastloaders? I was under the impression that it was not emulating the cpu or ram in the 1541 and would only work with games that did not use either of those.

  2. UPDATE: For people who paid Tuesday through this morning, I have sent out those carts an hour ago.

I still have both versions available (not many though)....if interested, please PM me.

For those who have not paid, please submit payments ASAP. I want to close this chapter and start the new "BBB" chapter (if you know what I mean.... ;) )

Thanks again for all of the people that not only bought the game but assisted in the production. :)

Just pulled the game out of my mailbox. This is easily one of the nicest reproductions I've ever bought! Is the rom going to be made available? I'd like to keep this sealed if at all possible.

Are you only interested in other 3DO games or are there games for other systems you would take in trade?

  4. The uIEC sounds like a really good solution. I have no problem seeking out cracked images to play with. Googling around a bit and I'm a little confused, what's the difference between the uIEC and sd2IEC?

It's not just a matter of finding cracked images to work with the uIEC. You have to find images that are cracked and don't have fast loader code, which most cracking groups added or left intact when they cracked the games. What you need to look for are images that are IDE compatible (I belive it's called IDE compatible, basically they need to be able to run from a hard drive). If you go with the 1541u, it will run the images even if they have fast loader code in them as it fully emulates the 1541, which is a "smart" device (has it's own CPU/RAM/etc).

I believe the sd2IEC is an earlier attempt and what the uIEC is doing. From my understanding, the uIEC is the best of the dumb devices. The 1541u is really the only one that will give you a huge amount of compatibility, but at a much greater cost. If you can afford it though, it's worth every penny and then some!

  5. UIEC is the way to go. I have 5.

I also have a 1541 ultimate, but have no real need to use it as all my c64 disk images are of cracked games. you only need 1541 emulation if you are playing d64s that are not cracked or g64s. The uiec can do disk swapping, I played phantasie 1 just the other day on it.

Juffydos should be a prerequisite so you are not typing long commands to change directories.

As far as not comparable to what the atari has, I'd say false. you can put your disk images on the uiec and change diretory to the file name and it opens as if you were loading the floppy.

    pretty cool and useful stuff.

Does the uIEC handle software fast loaders or does it still require that any fast loader be stripped from the .d64 before it will work? I'm guessing not as it doesn't emulate the CPU in the 1541, so there's no way for it to cope with having special loader code pushed to it.

  6. I agree with Mimo.

Radek, could you make an sdrive.atr (control program) version without OPTION key selection?

And while you are at it, issue that Poke that kills the loading beep from the computer. Maybe make it configurable for those that like it?

  7. As any one seen a good Super Off Road lately I have not seen one since high school.

Yeah, I pretty much see one everyday...

    You too?

Mine works although the monitor is a little dim. It's a big hit when the boys come over.

Glad you are still enjoying it! BTW, I finally ran across the box with my spare opto boards for it. I'll get them to you the next time we get together.

  8. Yea, I bought it. I'll fire it up once it gets here and will report back what all it has. I just love oddball stuff like this, so I'm really looking forward to playing with it!

  9. My money would be an old school Williams set of sticks, ala Robotron. That way you have the real deal. Leaf springs and centering grommets are available, so you just need a good set of sticks. My .25.

Microswitches on Robotron...? Just sounds wrong.

    CN

QFT. Nothing besides a nice set of Wico ball tops with leafs will feel right. I know at some point, there was a repro run of the long shafts to match the Robotron originals. They may still be out there somewhere. In fact, I still need a set for the pair of sticks going into my Multi Williams.

  10. FAT32 or just FAT? I did it as FAT.

FAT32 works for sure by my testing. I didn't do any other special prep to the card or anything. I do make sure to boot with it in the PCMCIA slot. Also remember, your accelerator is one that has issues with PCMCIA devices. Maybe it's causing it to not be able to read somehow? I know that it usually disables the RAM on the accelerator if there is a conflict, but maybe it's the opposite here?

  11. AARRGGH! I'm about ready to rip this CF out of the Amiga. I can't get the PCMCIA to CF adapter to recognize the card! I've installed the drivers from Amigakit, CF0 is mounted under the DOSDRIVERS folder, and I've even formatted the CF card as a hard drive under WINUAE (so WINUAE sees it now), but nothing on the real Amiga. EasyADF just says that there's no disk in CF0 and I see nothing on the desktop. PREPCARD detects the card though, so I'm pretty sure that the adapter and card work. Any ideas?

    Tempest

I don't think you want this CF formatted as an Amiga HD. For the PCMCIA to CF, you should just format it FAT32 from a PC. Nothing really fancy required for this.

  12. It's not feedback really. It can be turned off, I'd have to look up the necessary poke. It is possibly more annoying since the SDrive doesn't need to seek or wait for the sector to be ready, so the gap between sectors is very small. Using the higher speed modes, it becomes like a solid tone.

Oh, I apologize. I didn't know that. I thought it it was something unintentional, considered acceptable noise in the design.

No, not at all. I'm beyond happy with the Nuxx and it's performance! I wish there were more people that would make complete package projects like this.

My only complaint was more from a general Atari use standpoint. I'm coming from a different world of classic computing and don't have the same level of nostalgia as some do for the beeping on drive access. I understand why it's there, but would kill to turn it off just due to it driving me nuts to listen to it. Nothing at all to do with the Nuxx! In fact, the Nuxx makes it better since it loads the programs so much quicker and I don't have to listen to it as long!

  13. The long file name option just prints the long file name at the bottom of the screen. The file names in the list still display as 8.3, which is generated off of the long file name on the SD card.

As this probably illustrated, you do not need to use 8.3 filenames on the SD card itself. FAT16 does not require 8.3 filenames; you can use long file names with it. I suggest reading this article for more information and using long filenames on the SD card, and leaving the long file name display option on. I think that the convenience of this will come at the expense of more time to parse each directory listing, but I haven't tested this enough to be sure.

Thanks for the info. I'll play around with this a bit more when I get a couple of free minutes. I never thought to look anywhere else on the screen.

  14. Not sure about the long filenames but to stop the beeping you can turn the TV volume down :D

Hehe! Yea, that's been my solution so far. Hoping for a nice HW mod to eliminate it completely. Even a rom swap or something would be fine.

It was the soundtrack to my youth, still love the sound of an 8bit Atari loading

I guess I have the same feeling when it comes to the computers of my youth, only mine was the grinding of a 1541 being pounded out of alignment by copy protection. Funny how I'm willing to hook speakers up to my 1541u to hear the simulated drive sounds but on the XL, I can't stand to hear it's signature sound. I spent way too much time in front of my Commodores apparently!
