It's doing just fine in Europe (as is the PS3) and it's regularly outsold anything else in Japan.

Sony patents PS2 chip emulation technology for Cell
liveinabin replied to cimerians's topic in Sony Playstation 3
If they can give me the first two Katamari games on PSN, then I can ditch the PS2 for ever. C'mon Sony, make it happen. -
I really loathe the whole Mario/Luigi thing. Always have. Actually, to be fair, I hate all platform game avatars (post videogame crash). He's just so damn annoying and the only Mario games I've really liked have been despite the lead characters (SMB1, Super Mario Land, Mario Galaxy and Luigi's Mansion). It's not that I like gritty urban realism in my on-screen platformer avatars, but I prefer a middle ground - something like the original Prince of Persia or Burning Rangers. In the case of the Mario games, the slavish fan-service irks me too. How many times do they need to wheel out those chomping things on chains?

You really need Fallout. I'm not going to need to buy another game for a very long time, it's pretty much perfect.

Michael Jackson: The Video Game?
liveinabin replied to Lynxer2007's topic in Modern Console Discussion
He's already had two. Apart from the obvious Moonwalker, he co-starred in Space Channel 5 II. -
anybody else play games on "easy" difficulty?
liveinabin replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I often stick the game on easy. Fallout 3 is great on easy, while there's still a challenge, you don't have to worry about getting pasted all the time - the trade off being you level up slower. That's how it should be done. -
I like look of the Wii version. In UK, the only one available right now is the PS3 game. Although I have a PS3, I'm not real keen on the visuals (especially when the 360 version looks more polished - weird given that this was apparently developed on the PS3 and ported). No console can adequately do humans yet, so I'm drawn to the intentional unrealism of the Nintendo game. Anyone got both versions? Any preference?

Oh, I'm sure SOME fail, but not a lot, considering what that little box is powering out.

Don't worry too much about reliability. PS3's are very well made, you'll almost certainly be fine. Just keep the side with the air vents unblocked, but that goes for anything with a fan.

PS3 Slim- why is no one talking about this?
liveinabin replied to godslabrat's topic in Sony Playstation 3
Sure, the point is that while your Playstation works great, it was a timely price reduction - the 7000 series was cheaply available when the components that make up the Playstation were cheaply available because they weren't cutting edge(and your Saturn was just Sega losing money sadly). What I don't want is cut corners on something like the PS3 at this point in it's life where it still costs a hell of a lot to make. There are little or no legitimate savings to pass on to the buyer right now. A $200- PS3 would have to have some inferior bits somewhere I think. The BC thing is really an issue for some, certainly. Probably mostly on sites like this (where we're more likely to play older games). I'm just not a fan. I'd rather play older games on the original system (or a handheld). I'm all for a new system being the best thorobred machine it can be for playing the latest games. I like that the Gamecube didn't play N64 games, that the DC didn't play Saturn games. Every component in these machines was solely dedicated to doing the one job. I think incorporating BC diffuses the vision. It's like Microsoft Windows - if they didn't have to run programs and files from much older versions, MS could actually make (maybe) a really streamlined efficient OS. -

Although I've not been a Sony fan in the past (loathed the PS2 in all it's forms), I like the way that Sony is going. They're not comprimising the quality or getting into a price war with the other two (the 360, here, is now cheaper than the DS - that concerns me). They've got an astonishing piece of kit that, frankly, eclipses anything else available and the only concession they've made to market forces was to release a non BC version when the PS2 became an irrelevance. The PS3 may not be making too many waves in US right now but it's going really well in Europe (especially UK, which is the second biggest videogame market in the world - yes, we've overtaken Japan). Yeah, it's more expensive but you get what you pay for. I'd rather pay more up front and own a great console for years and years than save initially and be using some second rate gear made of cheap components that tanks after a couple of years (while I'm not actually citing the 360s ongoing reliability issues in that comparison, it would be valid). A cut down, slim, cheaper version is an inevitability but I'm glad Sony have resisted as long as they have. -

There is no way the PS3 is getting backwards compatibility ever. PS2s are practically free and making every PS3 purchaser pay for support for a Dreamcast era console is fairly pointless. I think BC is only really an important consideration at launch (and Sony, of course, delivered it then). The PS3 has more than enough of it's own AAA games to stand on it's own now. Sure, it'd be nice enough not to have to have two consoles plugged in, but it's just not realistic. As for this slim model. I'm fairly sure it's real but I don't think we've seen the complete unit. I think the fit and finish will change, given that the new PSP still looks more like the current PS3 than this 'new' one, I'm expecting more chrome and piano black elements to match. Not entirely convinced about the box though. That logo looks totally off. They're not going to change the typeface now, that would cause a disparity in style between the machine and the game boxes. I reckon it'll be called the PS3 (as opposed to the Playstation 3) and the logo will reflect this. In fact, at the end of the video trailer for the new WipEout HD Fury add on, we see that exact logo - PS3 in the same Playstation3 'Spiderman' font. -
Well it's a MMORPG so it's going to be a lot of wandering around killing the Star Wars equivalent of rats (Womp rats?) while other female avatars of male kids stand about in silence because their players have gone to the bathroom. That's as good as a MMORPG can be. I'm a bit surprised at the content of this demo too. The ships in this are not Old Republic style, they're more in the line of Episode III. When the heck is this game supposed to be set? Actually, that was a rhetorical question.

Cool. It's definitely getting better. That said, I'm playing Xenogears and Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete on my PSP now Ripping is the way forward.

Anybody else playing Phantasy Star portable? (PSP)
liveinabin replied to Crazy Climber's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Really enjoying it so far but damn, it holds your hand a bit doesn't it? I'm fairly early on, running with 3 NPCs who slaughter pretty much everything in the room. It's a fight to get any XP for myself. -

Heh. Mine's kinda on hold too. Fallout 3 is rendering all other videogames obsolete. Once I've got that out of my system I can enjoy other titles. -
Terrible news. Sucks about your Fallout save too, although I recommend using the opportunity to play through it again differently. Someone stole your console, you're entirely justified in playing again as a bad guy I think.
-
Careful. I don't think these work on the DSi. As far as I know, it hasn't been cracked yet.

liveinabin replied to Crazy Climber's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I've just started playing it. I loved Phantasy Star Online on the DC, but that was a hell of a long time ago. This is actually a port of an expansion disc (Ambition of the Illuminus) for the PS2 Phantasy Star Universe though luckily knowledge of that game is not required. (the 360 game was a PS2 port, a lazy one at that) Enjoying it so far. Like it's Dreamcast ancestor, it's basically just sci-fi Gauntlet which, if anything, suits the pick-up-and-play format of a handheld all the better. -
Just modded my PSP. Ridge Racer 4 on a handheld is AWESOME. The PS1 emulation on this thing is brilliant. Only downside is that there's no Analog. You can use the thumbstick but it's just digital. Gonna dump Ace Combat 3 on it next.

Picked the game up last weekend. Normally not my type of game but damn it's good. Liking it more than Oblivion, seems more focussed and more true to it's own laws. I'm level 6 but I'm taking my time, I've only just left the GNR radio station building. Just itching to try out my missile launcher. I am on Easy setting though, mainly because I'm the worlds worst first-person shooter player. Seriously, as soon as my AP runs out and I can't pause and target, I just equip the flamer and go berzerk - only way I ever hit anything. Vault 106 was very cool in an 'Eternal Darkness' kind of way. Incidentally, I'm getting a fair few lock-ups but I kinda expect them. There's just no way you could make a game this varied and massive and not have it crap out now and then. It's still not as bad as KOTOR 2, that thing was practically on rails and it still managed to crash all the time.

Nah, in greatness order: Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds (or Everybody's Golf: World Tour everywhere but US) Zany Golf Ninja Golf Add some Ninja action between holes in this new Tiger Woods game and I'll concede it's greatness. Or a hole under a massive jumping hamburger.

I'm officially sick of waiting. Modding my PSP and ripping my PS1 games to it is the next step. Ridge Racer 4 to go - yay!
