  1. My only complaint is with the crash junctions. These helped make Burnout 3: Takedown a thing of beauty, but they were a bit over the top in Burnout Revenge, and they're completely ridiculous here. Other than that, Burnout Paradise is top notch.

Played Burnout 2? I LOVE the crash junctions in that. Always felt B3 relied too heavily on the multipliers. B2 was just you, an intersection and a big insurance claim.

As for Burnout Paradise, I'm afraid to say I'll be trading my copy in. Had it since release and have updated it regularly. I appreciate all the features added, but to me, the game just seemed empty, soulless. I'm given free rein in a very well realised world but it's a world I wouldn't choose to be in. Since B3, the series has gradually stripped away everything I liked about it and, well, I'm done.

  2. I've thought about Little Big Planet. Given that I am the worst platform game player on this green Earth, is there anything in it for me?

My (probably innacurate) first impression of it was that it was the unholy child of Mario and Facebook. :) But I haven't actually played it yet.

Warhawk sounds interesting. I love flying games, particularly F-18 on the Amiga. Games never seem to have a free flight mode anymore, I miss that. Ace Combat would benefit greatly from it.

  3. This is a plea for advice and guidance. Apologies in advance for being a whining old git :)

I've not found a game that I've enjoyed playing for SUCH a long time and, as I'm knocking on, I'm starting to think there are no new games left for the likes of me. I'm posting here to ask your good selves for any games you might recommend to keep me going in this hobby.

I'll try and distill what I like in a game. Here follows a very short list of the games I've actually liked:-

    • Robotron 2084 - because it's 5 minutes of high speed abstract excitement.

    • Frogger - 20 minutes of low speed abstract excitement.

    • Zak McKracken and all the Sam & Max games - because they were funny clever and you didn't die (a game mechanic that I'm sick of, apart from in Robotron where it's pretty much all you do, though with such style)

    • Ridge Racer 4, Ridge Racers 2 PSP, Outrun 2/2006 - because they're high speed escapism, not particularly challenging but such a great feeling of speed and freedom.

    • Burnout 2 - The only Burnout game for me. Just got rid of Burnout Paradise as it was just soulless.

    • Everybody's Golf World Tour - Fun, accesible gameplay.

    • Endless Ocean - which is closest to my ideal - not a game as such, impossible to 'lose', it's just another little world to play in. I love it.

    • Panzer Dragoon Saga - almost not worth mentioning as there will probably never be another game like it.

    • Katamari Damacy - as Panzer Dragoon Saga. Although I guess LocoRoco has similar charms but I've got both of those.

    • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - admittedly easy but involving RPG without grinding or heavy menu fiddling.

Really, what I'd love is something that I can just play in. I no longer have the patience/time or, really, skill to take on most titles if I'm honest. I always preferred the game worlds to the actual game per se. So, I don't really care how easy a game is, or childish for that matter. I'm not at all tempted by first person shooters or wargames in general.

I can take a bit of competition in arcade racers as I suppose I'm at least competent at those.

Crap at platform games though, bad like you wouldn't believe. Mario Galaxy made me angrier that I think I've ever been. :)

Ironically though, I'm loving the Bullet Hell shooters - surely the most difficult of games, so difficult that they're quite calming in a totally focussed, zen way.

Um, what else?... oh yeah, I've resigned from Japanese RPGs. I've spent my last hour of pointless grinding in Star Ocean: First Departure and I'm through. That's kinda what prompted this plea.

Please, is there anything left for me to play? I can't keep playing Ridge Racer for ever.

    Thanks!

  4. Don't know about systems but I've often regretted owning more than one game!

When I get a new system, I generally buy the one game I've been craving for it (Ridge Racer 7 for PS3, Crazy Taxi for DC, Rogue Leader for GC etc.) and I play it to death, loving every minute.

Then I get into the cycle of buying more games for it, not really giving each title the time it deserves, filling shelves full of half played, half loved discs.

  5. I probably missed something but where did you get a white PS3 from? They're not available in US are they? I would have loved one of those, they've got that Imperial Stormtrooper chic.

As for the headset. Make sure the Bluetooth headset is defined as the input/output device under Settings>Accessory Settings>Audio Device Settings. Failing that, check the game menus in Warhawk (don't have it so I'm unfamiliar with it's options). It may have it's own settings for the default audio device.

  6. I was really fired up about the Wii in it's first year, but it's just fell on it ass, games wise. It comes on very rarely for Endless Ocean, but that's it.

As for the 360. There have been 3 or 4 times in the past two years when I've had the money burning a hole in my pocket and I've been SO close to getting one (like, outside the store close). The massive unreliability and the high cost of getting a 'complete' system (ie. Wireless networking, controller chargers, HDMI etc) has just stayed my hand every time.

The PS3, however, is the one I loved to hate initially. Hated the PS2, couldn't wait for Sony to fail. Gave in one day and bought it for Ridge Racer and the Blu-Ray player. LOVE the system. It's probably my favourite console ever, and I'm totally surprised by that.

I especially love all the free stuff on PSN and the great cheap games (WipeOut HD for practically NO money at all). I like arcade racers and casual type games and the PS3 has those in spades. The controllers, while boringly the same as ever, are nice and charge from a regular USB cable (I'm looking at YOU Microsoft!), while the standard ports on the rear let me choose my own HDMI cable (still looking at you MS). And I LOVE the way that I can just swap the HD out for any sized notebook drive that I want (still...etc etc).

I have to grudgingly admit that Sony did it all right this time. I think it's thanks to the Wii's success really, it's forced Sony to actually try for once. They haven't done that in a while.

The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that I can't plug a Jogcon in to play Ridge Racer 4 with.

  7. Playstation Home is a horrible miscalculation marring what is, for the most part, a great console.

I can't believe they think that people are going to go for this, a 'virtual world' where you can go to stand about and be advertised to. Worse still, they're expecting real money for graphical representations of furniture.

I see what they're trying to do, building a community and all, but I think they should have built it around Little Big Planet instead. People are actually playing and contributing to that.

  8. Novastrike is probably a mistake anyway ;)

I'm really liking the PS store, there's some great stuff on it now - GTA Club+ and WipEout HD for instance.

The 'this game requires and update' thing is annoying sometimes, although you can just PS button your way back out of that and turn the wireless off. Then you can play it all you like and have the updates download later when you're done.

  9. Mine's the same as my AA name, 'Liveinabin'

    I've got:

    Ridge Racer 7

Everybody's Golf: World Tour (called Hot Shots golf in US I think)

    Wipeout HD

and I'll have GTI Club+ this week too.

I'm crap at all of the above and you will beat me :)

  10. It's not a good article, but I think the reasoning is sound. The 'standby' problem with electronics is one that really needs to be addressed. Worldwide, a lot of power is being completely wasted and it's, mostly, from non renewable sources.

It does annoy me that the Wii can't really be turned off properly (short of pulling the mains lead out). Sure, it doesn't take a lot of power, but it all adds up, especially when my TV doesn't really turn off either and, while my cinema amp will fully power down, it'll lose all it's settings in a week if not powered back on.

Bloody annoying, potentially expensive and, more importantly, a waste of electricity on what are basically toys.

At least the PS3 got it right in this regard, even if the switch is right round the back.
