1. It really isn't a problem - you can still play if you're not connected. I used to play HL2 offline all the time (dial-up hell). Unless you want to play online multiplayer, but then your PC isn't connected to the internet, is it? Seriously, it's a non-issue. If for whatever reason you don't want to have Steam connect while you're on broadband, just disable the network connection temporarily.
2. I'm not sure why convenience is a bad thing. It also keeps everyone on a level playing field to help curb OMG CH34TERZ!!!
3 & 5. Can't say I've ever experienced random crashes. But that's just me.
