I know that you can add certain suffixes to your ROM to tell the emulator what to do, or change the joystick port but I don't have the time nor the inclination to do all that to play a game.

Yeah, that's probably one of the biggest annoyances I see. Needing to add a bunch of values to the end of an image name on a per-game basis to get it to work properly?  Nope.

I really wish someone would start a project to make new mechanical keyboard replacements. I just installed one into my CoCo 3....and now this computer has the best keyboard of any vintage computer I own ;) Funny how the C64 is so much more popular but still has nothing like this to date.

I think he's taking a break from making more at the moment. I have one, but it's not quite the slam dunk you would hope for, given the cost. It required adding keycap adapters to fit the original keycaps to the Cherry MX switches - a frustrating process, which (at least in my case) leaves the keys looking and feeling a bit uneven/unstable. My F7 key kept popping off until I trimmed down the adapter a bit. And if I ever want to change out the keycaps, I'll need to obtain a new set of adapters.  That said, it is very nice to type on.

    2) Sony PlayStation 3, 2006. An absolute beast of a system. It's Cell processor was so powerful that it still beats out many traditional processors today. A Blu-Ray drive way back in 2006 that worked as a great player as well, and fully 1080p! It was made to compete for 10 years, and it did!

Eh. It was marginally more powerful than the 360, and the difficulty in developing for it compared to the 360 pretty much negated any advantage it  possessed, unless you had a truly crackerjack team developing specifically for the hardware (e.g. Naughty Dog).  Even then it wasn't leaps and bounds beyond the competition.

  4. Started collecting 2600/5200/7800 carts and hardware around 2002-2003. Branched out into Commodore 64/128 territory, as well as Atari 8-Bit hardware.

It subsided for a while after getting married and having a couple of kids. I still collected, but it was pretty low-key. Collecting physical games fell by the wayside, as multi-carts are far more convenient.

Around 2013-14 I started modding OG Xboxes with a bajillion emulators/roms.

In 2015 I picked up Retrogamer's Amiga bookazine, and we were off to the races again. Got deep into the whole Amiga thing - which unfortunately also led me into CRT territory. I currently have about a dozen lying around the house, which is frankly, dumb.

With the advent of nice FPGA devices like the Analogue products, the Ultimate 64, and MiST/MiSTer - and filters that are decent at reproducing scanline effects - I can see myself getting rid of a lot of the old stuff before too long.

    How is the game?

I'm enjoying it (The Outer Worlds) so far. It most resembles Fallout 3/4/NV, with a dash of Mass Effect and Bioshock (among other games), which are some of my favorite franchises of the past 10+ years.  So it's scratching me where I itch. It's a bit more focused and compact compared to Fallout, though I'm still on the first planet - I'm not sure if it opens up more as you progress.

  6. I like Analogue's products, I like the MiST and MiSTer projects.  But I'm not sure why the MiSTer folks are getting bent out of shape over some of that work potentially being ported over to the Pocket. It's a defining characteristic of OSS. If you release code to the public and say anyone can use it (within the terms of the license), you can't really get upset when others do just that.

  7. I got my first 64 in late 83; I think I went through three of them in the span of as many months before I got a stable one.

That one lasted for a decade despite daily heavy use.  Its replacement is still going strong - though I have modded it pretty heavily in recent years to eliminate the more vulnerable components.

Then they can get a Harmony cart to supplement it.  In the end I'd like a cart that can do both, but if that's going to hold up development I'd settle for a 7800 only cart.

Same here - there are several ways to play 2600 games without needing individual carts. Far fewer options for the 7800.
