Awesome... I am very much looking to getting my hands on the mini NT and going to town. Curious about the 5200; seems somewhat conspicuously absent considering the rest of its contemporaries are on the list. Are there technical challenges/reasons it's not in the works? Edit: Nevermind, I saw someone else already addressed this!

Can't believe I just dropped nearly $500 on this... oy

I bought a german keyboard as a replacement for my wonky US keyboard; swapped the keycaps and it works fine. However, what's wrong with the existing one? Have you checked the ribbon cable connection? Is it frayed or torn? I've seen examples of that issue being fixed with a silver conductive pen/paint (there are videos on youtube). Might be worth looking into.

Individual Computers A1200 accelerator cards - thoughts?
Laner replied to oracle_jedi's topic in Commodore Amiga
I bought an A1200 a couple of years ago with a 1231 (predecessor to the 1233) as part of the package. Runs at 42Mhz, with 64MB of RAM. Between that and an 8GB CF card for WHDLoad-enabled games, it's fantastic. Haven't run into any noticeable issues. -
Looks like I missed the boat. If there's ever another run of these, I'm interested.

The Amiga: Why did it fail so hard in the United States?
Laner replied to empsolo's topic in Commodore Amiga
The Amiga had a marginal retail presence in the US, at least where I lived. Despite being a die-hard Commodore fan and seriously lusting after the A1000 during the run up to and after it's launch, I *never* saw an Amiga in the wild - never. Same for the Atari ST. I had one friend with an Apple IIGS, but that was it. I briefly worked in a mom and pop computer sales/repair shop in 1990 - we didn't sell or service those platforms. I don't think I ever saw one come in for repair either. Everyone seemed to hang on to their 8-bit computers until replacing them with PCs or Macs in the early 90s. Whereas during the 8-bit era you could buy home computers virtually everywhere - C64s in K-Mart, Atari 800XLs in Sears, Tandy CoCos in Radio Shack, etc. While I recall seeing software for the 16-bit platforms here and there, the actual hardware seemed to be virtually nonexistent. -
New C64 ULTIMA style RPG for PC...and C64 (kickstarter)
Laner replied to cimerians's topic in Commodore 8-bit Computers
The cheapest way to get the C64 version is to splash out $154? hooo boy. -
Yes - one of my favorites!

Ultimate SD Cart run, US source, Nov 30 ship date, 25 in run
Laner replied to MacRorie's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
No, seems to be plenty of clearance. If I hit the system reset button, the menu comes up, so it's not a huge deal - just weird that it doesn't come up the first time. -
Ultimate SD Cart run, US source, Nov 30 ship date, 25 in run
Laner replied to MacRorie's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Got mine last night - thanks again MacRorie! I did have a question about the behavior of it; I'm using it in an 800, and about 50-60% of the time I'll get the Ultimate Cart interface, but no games are listed. I have to restart the computer, which usually does the trick, but not always. Any ideas? -
It's not the 4K, it's the HDR. I have my fingers crossed that HDR will allow someone to do proper vector monitor emulation; I played a couple of vector arcade games last month and was astonished at how bright the brightest elements were (your shots in Asteroids for example) - it's something that I simply didn't remember after decades of only playing MAME versions. That effect cannot be properly emulated on non-HDR screens. I don't know if HDR is up to the task either, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

I don't have any experience with the Gotek/HxC drives, but they seem to be pretty popular. They all work about the same as far as I can tell. The IDE/Compact Flash adapter is a must-have. Much faster, and silent compared to the stock hard drives. Not sure about making the current floppy drive an external drive. You can get a Kickstart 3.1 ROM from eBay or Amigakit ( http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=96). Just make sure you get the A600 version. If you do decide to sell it, shoot me a PM

I've got an A600 with a wonky audio channel. I took a look at the caps and they all appear intact, but beyond that I have no idea what might be wrong. I see that Amigakit offers a repair service, but that would mean shipping it overseas. There's also a guy (Chicago-based) on ebay with a 100% rating who provides these services, but after the whole Swampfox debacle I'm hesitant to ship my stuff to someone I don't know from Adam*. Any recommendations? TIA**. -- *The biblical figure, not the Coleco home computer. ** Thanks In Advance, not the 2600 component. (Sometimes I think I'm in too deep...)

Anyone have experience with a Sony PVM-1953ST
Laner replied to SteveFlash's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Chiming in as well... just purchased one of these locally; looks great, though there are minor geometry issues that need to be addressed. Glad to hear it can be accessed via the service menu. -
Apollo Team Vampire boards for A500 now available for pre-order
Laner replied to Sinphaltimus's topic in Commodore Amiga
The latest core has limited ECS support through HDMI; about 160-170 games are currently support. Hopefully it will improve over time. -
Thanks for the update; I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a preorder from Solaris.
-
Ah. I wasn't aware of Solaris - thanks!

Speaking of the Framemeister, what's going on with the prices? They seem to have doubled over the past month on eBay and Amazon.

I read On The Edge from cover to cover last week during my vacation; while I knew Commodore's history in broad strokes, it really was an enlightening and compelling read - at least through the 8-bit era. I felt like the Amiga story got a short shrift largely due to his reliance on Chuck Peddle and BIll Herd's stories, but with "The Amiga Years" coming soon, hopefully that will be rectified. Brian certainly had a specific story he wanted to tell, but he makes that clear from the beginning - that history is written by the victors. Commodore/MOS played a huge role in shaping the current technological landscape that has been virtually forgotten in the intervening years. I wish he was able to interview Jack or any of the Tramiel sons - that would have made it a much more balanced read. But overall it was a great book, and I look forward to his upcoming book.

The one that didn't work is a Transcend 4GB SDHC card; the one that did is a Kingston 2GB SD card. I don't think I have any more plain SD cards lying around, but I'll check my other SDHC cards and see if any of them work.
-
It did for me... the first card I tried did not work at all; the second worked fine.
-
I haven't done extensive testing, but the handful of 7800 titles I tried from the GoodMerge set (Xevious, Ballblazer, Pole Position II, One on One, Asteroids) worked fine. Haven't tried any homebrews yet. Pitfall II won't load, but I assume that's due to it being a special case.

I'm definitely interested if any are left over.

While I'm on the Vampire waiting list along with hundreds of others, I'm wondering if the Furia accelerator might be more of what I'm looking for. I don't need my 600 to run at supersonic speeds; I just want to be able to run games from WHDLoad at a decent clip. Any experiences with this board, good or bad?
