Hi! question about the Atari - Jr. Pac-Man discovered!
jwierer replied to FrauBlucha's topic in Atari 7800
1. You don't require Google Chrome to download. 2. Excessive use of emoticons is not necessary. 3. These maps are pretty good, but these should really be *moved* into the 7800 Hacks forum. -Jeff -
I just use an existing 7800 cart and put it on an EPROM. You can find a tutorial I wrote here. -Jeff

Post the bin you're using. It should work fine with the original Ms. Pacman and Bob's updated hack. [update] Just tested and it seems to work fine. If you go to Help->Download Roms->Ms Pacman, you'll get the same binary I was using for testing. The original Ms. Pacman should be a 16K rom. -Jeff

Very cool. Was attempted before in this thread, but this is much better. The only thing I like about the previous hack is the SELMA in the title screen was changed to ATARI. -Jeff

Congratulations on your first, interesting, yet confusing, and non-productive post. At least I guess you bumped this thread. -Jeff
-
Looks fine to me? Did you just try copying all the files from your older computer? -Jeff
-
That seems to make it compile better. Now the score isn't screwed up. Does it compile fine outside of vbb? I'm guessing not, and it's a configuration issue with your bB setup. default.bas.bin -Jeff

It is compiling fine for me? Compile started at 10/3/2009 8:45:20 PM Compiling c:\Emulation\VisualbB\Default\testing8k.bas 2600 Basic compilation completed. It's the DataGridViewControl. -Jeff OK, I thought it might be something like that. Thank you very much. No problem, PM me if you have trouble understanding the events. -Jeff

Do you get the same result if you just try to compile using the batch file outside of VbB? I haven't upgrade to Windows 7 yet to test myself. -Jeff

Batari did create a space invaders clone in bB that might be worth taking a look at first. Original thread is here. -Jeff

Here is a little more action for the Smurf lovers. Papa Smurf , Pacland 2 is a hack of Jr. Pacman. Changed most of the graphics and the levels are all different, upside down actually which completely changes the game play. Only thing I didn't change was the fruits. Maybe somebody more creative can do better? papasmurf_in_pacland_ii.a78 PapaSmurf_in_Pacland_II.bin Enjoy, Jeff

Vbb has a concept of projects, which will create a project folder and then from there you create .bas files for the code, .pla for playfields, and .spr for sprites. So the first thing you want to do is create a new project, or you can use the default one. From the Project Explorer on the right you can right click and add an new item (code, playfield, or sprite) and then you can open up any of the files and depending on what type the correct editor will open. It's a more sophisticated management system, but it's easier once you figure it out. -Jeff

From the bB readme. "This version of bB requires that an environment variable and path are set so that you can compile your source files no matter where they are located. So before you run bB, you need to set the "bB" environment variable and path to your bB folder. There are several ways to do this. The easiest way is to just type in the commands below. This will be active for the duration of your session, but only in the window where you define it. e.g.: set bB=c:\Atari2600\bB path=%path%;c:\Atari2600\bB If you want this set permanently every time you start DOS or the Windows command prompt, you may add the two above lines to the autoexec.nt (Windows NT/2k/XP) or autoexec.bat (DOS/Windows 95/98/Me) file. autoexec.nt is typically located either in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32, and autoexec.bat is in the root directory. If the files don't exist, create them" You can also 1. Right-click the "My Computer" icon (Computer in Vista) 2. Choose "Properties" from the context menu 3. Click the "Advanced" tab ("Advanced system settings" link in Vista) 4. Click the "Environment Variables" button 5. Under the "User variables" section, click new 6. Enter the hotstring in the "Variable name" field and the path in the "Variable value" field 7. Click OK Of course VisualbB does this for you. -Jeff

It works for me, but I did notice that my latest build is a bit faster so try this one. If this doesn't work perhaps it's the specific image you're using? In which case, PM it to me so I can see why it doesn't work. ImgToCode.zip Thanks, Jeff

The ghosts share a single set of sprites, though they have their own individual colors that can be set. You have to set the in game colors and the intermission colors separately. -Jeff Ah, that's too bad they all share same set of sprites. I would've been great if each had their own set of sprites. I had an idea of Gargamel head being chased by smurf heads. Smurfs all look the same anyway, blue face, white hat, right? Go for it! -Jeff
-
Thanks! I'm eager to see what other games folks dream up. -Jeff

Not to get off-topic, but it sounds like your environment variables are not setup. The bB readme covers how to set these and if you're using VisualbB there is an option to handle this for you. Also directory names with spaces are problematic. I would recommend keeping bB in root directory with no spaces to rule out those issues. -Jeff

Here's another hack for all the Smurf fans, "Papa Smurf in Pacland". This one has all new levels, title screen, graphics, and even the intermission graphics are different. The only thing I really don't like is the 3rd pacman color for the hat is shared with the hidden side border so you see the "red" zones on the left and right hand side. It's possible you need one of the various updates that have come out over time. I think there is a roll up of different updates here. -Jeff

You can now grab it from here. -Jeff

For anybody following my blog, you'll know I've been working on an easy to use tool to hack the 7800 series of Pacman games. I've finally posted the first release here.

I am proud to make publicly available an Atari 7800 PacmanConstruction Set. For those who previously tried my Beef Drop Construction Set, I tried to get to make it as simple as possible to hack Pacman. With this tool you'll beable to many changes to most aspects of the Pacman series of games such as:Pacman, Ms. Pacman, and Jr. Pacman to create custom hacks of Pacman. Since you can change most aspects of the game, aside from the actual game play, you can create entirely new versions for this classic game. Here's a list of the things you can change: Mazes Dot pattern Energy Dot locations Maze order Fruit Locations (Ms Pacman) Game Colors Sprites Title Screen Graphics Game Text Number of lives Before you begin you need to make sure you're systems meetsthe minimum requirements. Prerequisites Operating System: Windows XP, Vista, Windows7. Might work on older versions of Windows, but I haven't tried it. .NET Framework 3.0 ( if running XP you can download here) Ram about 20-25MB of free ram 1MB of free disk Download Latest PCS1.031.zip Older pcs1.030.zip pcs1.029.zip pcs1.027.zip pcs1.026.zip.zip There is very little you need to do after downloading and running. Basically make sure that pacman constructionset.exe and A78SIGN.exe, included in the download below) are in the same directory. After that everything is optional, but will make your life easier. The first thing you'll want to do is set an emulator to use using the Debug menu and selecting "Set Emulator". I tested this with ProSystem during development, but you can choose whatever you want. You can find some emulators here. The other thing you might want to do is load an external editor such as a hex editor or bit editor like Hack-o-matic 3 so you can make additional modifications, not available from the editor itself. Once set you can test in an emulator by hitting F8 or opening in an editor using F9. Menu items and buttons are also available. Screenshots Here are some hacks I've posted previously in my blog Snow Day Jr. Pacman Upside Down Pacman Upside Down Ms Pacman Jr Ms Pacman Special thanks to Bob DeCrescenzo for creating the 7800 Pacman series and providing me with all the technical information necessary to create this and Gambler172 for tirelessly testing the last couple months!
