  1. Stupid question, but in settings, what do I put for Commands and Dictionary, or do I leave those blank?

Not stupid at all. Those features aren't that intuitive to use.

The Dictionary is for custom terms you want to show up with color codes in the code editor. Click the dictionary button to see the current list of terms, edit as you choose and then save. It will create an XML file with your settings.

Commands are useful if you want to extend the list of commands which you can access from the project explorer pane on the right side. Those commands can literally be anything such as snippets of code that you reuse. You can right click from the commands pane to generate the basic commands.xml file. From there all changes will be saved to that file and reapplied every time you load Visual bB.

You can always leave them blank and use the defaults. They are only necessary if you want to make modifications.

  2. Thanks for your effort - I'll have to try this out later. I usually use a Mac but have a PC as well.

That said, do you have any plans to release the source (privately would be OK) as I wonder if it will build under Mono?

I would have to do some serious code clean up and commenting before I felt comfortable sharing the source ;)

  3. I haven't tried it yet, but I couldn't wait to say Thank You! This is much, much appreciated and it will contribute greatly to bB game creation. Everyone who develops a game using this IDE owes you one, big time. Why did you make it? Will you be releasing any bB games?

I always wanted to learn bB, but couldn't find an editor that would make it easy enough to do it quickly. The more I thought about it, the more I became obsessed with making a great bB editor. I've made some test projects, but nothing really worth sharing, mostly stuff to make sure I could get this working. I'm hoping you more creative types can use it to create better games for me to play.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  4. Here is a project that I have been working on for some time and it's finally in a shareable state. VisualbB is an integrated development environment for writing Atari 2600 programs in batariBasic. For anybody that is familiar with Microsoft Visual Studio, it has a similar look and feel. Hope somebody find this useful icon_smile.gif

    ALTERNATIVES:

    Please Pardon the Interruption :-D

While Visual bB helped many folks get started with batari BASIC, it has not had an update for many years.

A more well-maintained alternative is Atari Dev Studio for the popular (and free!) editor Visual Code.

(Besides being easy to setup it is also an alternative for Mac and Linux users!)

A kickstart for working with it can be found here.

Atari Dev Studio does not have the assortment of asset managers and editors for graphics and sound.

Some replacements (all generating ready-to-run batari Basic code) can be found at https://alienbill.com/2600/

And as always, see https://www.randomterrain.com/atari-2600-memories-batari-basic-commands.html for the most complete list of batari Basic resources.

    NOW BACK TO THE PROGRAM!

Build 568 - Update by CPUWIZ

Please click the link below for the last version of VbB that jwierer gave to Random Terrain in 2014:

    *New* Build 554 Update Notes
(Because AA limits 2MB uploads you'll need to download both files and unzip it to the same folder)

    Work in Progress
You can grab the latest from my blog. Along with changes that work with the bB1.1 beta builds there are other enhancements like a title screen wizard, integration with bblint, and a new bookmarking feature. These builds are specific to the beta versions of bB1.1 so use at your own risk. It should work fine (even better?) with the latest 1.0 release of bB.

    Previous Releases

    • Project Wizard for creating new projects
    • Code editor with Syntax Highlighting and color coding
    • Music composing and Sound Editing
    • Built in integration with bB compiler
    • Built in integration with multiple Windows Atari 2600 emulators
    • Built it in TIA Palette
    • Built in Score Table Editor
    • Quick bB Commands for rapid application development
    • Quick launch

    Online Guide available here
    Troubleshooting guide is here
Daniel Davis has started a set of video tutorial here

    Prerequisites

    • If you are not running Vista or Windows 7 then you'll need to make sure the .NET Framework 3.0 is installed
    • If you are running Vista you may need to RunAs Administrator. If you are logged in with admin privileges or have turned off UAC then it should just work
    • If you are having trouble with the music and sound editor, it's likely you don't have the .NET 1.1 runtimes installed. Older machines don't include it and I believe newer ones won't allow the install. You can just copy msvcr71.dll to your visualbB folder. msvcr71.zip

    Optional

    • If you are having trouble you may want to try a different 2600bas.bat 2600bas.zip
    • If you're using Windows 7 64-bit, you'll need to update your bB files. Here is a copy of my working bB folder bBWin7_64bit-2-26-2013.zip You can learn more by reading this thread. Updated on 2/13/2013 with RevEng's jitter fix
    • If you're having trouble using the sprite/playfield editor go here for a registry fix.

Special thanks to Random Terrain for beta testing and submitting bug reports for many, many years!

  5. If you want to include homebrews (original games made after the system no longer produced games), then include these:

    165 Adventure II

    166 Beef Drop

    167 Castle Blast

    168 Castle Crisis

    169a Combat II Advanced

169b Combat II Advanced (Super Attack Battle label)

    170 Flip and Flop

171a Haunted House II 3-D (original black label)

171b Haunted House II 3-D (revised art label)

171c Haunted House II 3-D (Scary Mansion II 3-D label)

    172 Klax

    173 Koffi: Yellow Kopter

    174 Rent Wars

ALL: If I've missed something, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Orri~

I thought Flip and Flop was actually a conversion.

    -Jeff

It may be; I've been waiting for confirmation on Flip & Flop and Rent Wars for a while now (in a different thread), but haven't gotten an answer.

I think it's a conversion, and that Rent Wars is a homebrew.

    Can anyone confirm?

Also, I'm missing some Atari, Corp re-releases, so I'll add those as well.

    Thanks,

    Orri~

Flip and Flop existed in '83

    http://www.atarimania.com/detail_soft.php?...VERSION_ID=2021

From the Rent Wars announce it was also written in '83, but never released. No mention if it was originally written for 5200 or not.

  7. level 2 is all set up now. I added a screen for it. It's supposed to be a desert level, so I added what I think is appropriate music. Warning: the background isn't black, and there might be some bugs, and if there are, tell me about them.

    Source?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  8. Here's a binary with the new sprites. I had to change the jumping one a little bit, but I think Raccoon Lad definitely did a good job with these sprites.

Did you mean for this sprite to be short one row of colors? There are 21 rows of pixels, but only 20 colors.

  9. Do you know who convertered the rom images to run on the 5200? (and when?)

I've never heard of the Sean Kelly cart before either - cool.

Great labels - how do you go about making your own carts?

    - PJ

DK and DK Jr were converted by Ken Siders.

    -Jeff

  10. A couple of the roms are available here.

Well, some of the games are available for sale there, but not for download, which is what I assume the original question was asking.

I believe the programmer requested the ROMs not be distributed which is probably why you can't find them. I believe he did release demo versions of Combat 2 and Haunted House 3d, though.

    Mitch

yes, the question was about the roms

I would like to try them before paying 40 or 60 $ for them

They are Atari 8-bit computer conversions. All those already exist on the web if you want to try them on an emulator. They would be exactly the same if you used them on a 5200 emulator.

  11. Give this one a shot. It ain't perfect, but I've changed much of the title screen along with all three aerial enemies. I hate the way the red guys look, but this was as close as I could get to the arcade game without animation or multiple colors.

I like yours sooo much better. It's slightly over 32K though? It looks like there is 3 bytes of garbage at the end. I trimmed it so it fits on an eprom.

  12. Both sets of boxes look mighty sweet, guys. :)

This reminds me of a question I've always wanted to get an answer to: Has anyone ever bothered to fix the title screen and "unhack" the other things (like the flying brassieres) in Matt Patrol, to revert it to its "intended original state"?

Fixing the "bra" alien wasn't too tough, although I'm sure somebody can do better? The title screen is a bit more involved.

  13. Again if the .bins aren't signed they won't work on standard US released 7800s. Is this latest one signed already?

*UPDATE* - Doesn't appear to be signed for the US NTSC 7800's encryption. On Prosystem the 7800 bios screen just loops with the latest .bin posted here.

Just have to wait for Mitch or someone with the program to encypt the .bin for US NTSC 7800s.

    Give this one a shot.

  14. I know, but you can fix it :D though your probably right nobodys interested in a pong game.

I'm pretty sure there is a fixed version of this around, I've played it on a real 5200 at one point.

    Steve

Jum Pong v2 should work. There is a thread along with a control hack here

    -Jeff

  15. Do people still use HOM3 or should I try and find another program like Bit Hacker or whatever it was called?!

I downloaded and ran the latest version of this and get an error. It won't even open. I have Windows XP. It says "This application has failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.

XP came out before the .NET FX 2.0 so you have to make sure you've installed that prior to using HOM3.

    -Jeff

  16. Here it is... I don't know what everything is, and may use the wrong terminology, but I hope someone can understand me enough to answer.

On the motherboard, there are four large chips in the middle of the board. My question is about the one on the front right of the board, when looking at it from the front, where the joystick ports are.

I've got a board where on the front of that front right chip, pin number 10, when counting from right to left, is stuck out. Is this a problem?

I've tried several games on it and they all seem to work just fine. I've tried PacMan, Pengo, Dig Dug, Qix, Pitfall, River Raid, Star Wars Arcade, Ms. PacMan and Berzerk.

That's the G.T.I.A Graphics Television Interface Adapter and that pin is always disconnected on any 5200 I've opened up so you're fine.

    -Jeff

  17. Anybody try putting this on a cart and running it on a 7800? I've tried twice and both just hang after going a few seconds into the attaract mode. Finally tried the same carts on a 2600 and they works fine.

After reading this I realized that I never ran the finished cart on my 7800 just my 2600 and Video Arcade II.

I gave my cart a try tonight on my 7800 and it plays fine without hanging.

Must be my 7800 then. Odd that it works with everything else. Oh well, at least I can play it on my 2600.

    Thanks,

    Jeff
