Unicorns season: Prince of Persia for the A8!
Jetboot Jack replied to rensoup's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Lots of feedback here 😛 - my 10c it's your game you make all the calls. If anyone want's something different, they should boot up those tools and make it. I think what you have looks and plays brilliantly. sTeVE P.S. I wouldn't even have the optional sound bank, decide on one and go with it, strong direction always wins out over compromise... -
Unicorns season: Prince of Persia for the A8!

Jordan released a FANTASTIC book back in 2011 all about POP - bought it and read it digitally when it came out then - I wonder if it's the same material? sTeVE -
Plastron Source did anyone down load it?
Jetboot Jack replied to Plastron's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I never thought to preserve anything - it was just work then, and many people I know have likewise many lost/fabled projects that I see regularly asked about. I share when I find stuff (like the 7800 games my friend Amy had worked on) and always wish I had not lost things. I know there are many games or pieces of games floating around, like Winter Games for the A8 (which I saw alongside UFO at Atari UK)... sTeVE -
Plastron Source did anyone down load it?

Last Ninja II - like some other announced never shown games was signed with the respective UK publishers (System III etc), but never got further than a basic proof of concept demo. Unfortunately the assets are now lost to the mists of time, along with various other demos/software like Trap and Psygnosis Barbarian)... The agreements (I still have a few of the signed contracts) are only concerned with my/and or Harlequin's rights and responsibilities under fixed term publishing and development agreements. So nothing to prevent my discussion of this ancient material 🙂 Orall did some lovely music for Beast for me, but that track xxl is not one I commissioned for that game AFAIK, but it may have been one I had received, or was it from Richard? sTeVE -

Yeah - my bad, I lost a lot of the files from my old site sadly... sTeVE -
Most famous to gamers because of: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarian:_The_Ultimate_Warrior and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarian_II:_The_Dungeon_of_Drax Done by my good friend Steve Brown... sTeVE

To be honest making games always has been more fun than playing them - that's why I still do it as the day job... sTeVE

Super Pac Man Prototype Cart - Atari XE

Video 61 sold those... -
I loved GAD - despite it's mode 7 only functionality it's tools were awesome! I always liked your artwork! sTeVE

I found Hoxs64 a bit variable, particularly with audio - video was good (although the default palette is pretty off) - I used it for a year or so, but now have returned to VICE as a more accurate sound wise. Not tired the latest (Nov '19) version of Hoxs - is it worth a look, does it do anything better than Vice? sTeVE P.S. I have finally given up with Atari800 and now use Altirra for A8 emulation, despite it liking to drop out of full screen mode occasionally 🙂

Absolutely valid idea, I used to love working with EPYX Fun With Art - very powerful compared with other tools at the time. But very limiting and stopped the exploration of the target platforms's full power as image creation tools and techniques easily exceed the working RAM and storage abilities of 8bit machines even when the machine can display the images created - hence why cross development tools are used for games development rather than on hardware tools... Did anyone creating commercial artwork for games ever use the native tools on the target platform after about '83/'84? As soon as possible I started using ST/PC/Amiga or other cross development tools to create stuff for the 8bit platforms - I think my first non native art package was MacPaint and Prism on the Amiga development kits. sTeVE

Not seen one - but the "original" was on MegaDrive - Works well under the usual emulators like Retroarch... sTeVE

The speech quality might vary slightly depending on the SID revision you have in your system, mine is very clear. If you run under emulation try different SID settings in VICE to hear the variances... I would urge you to play it, very reminiscent of the arcade games of the time, and a lovely homage to a great movie IMHO. I suspect you would find it no more kiddie than all the similar arcade games like DK, Dig Dug, Q*Bert etc - it's very much in the Donkey Kong feeling mould, if that's not your thing I get it, but it's no more juvenile than 80% of 80's arcade fare... Take a look at some of the in game screens, I can't see how the A8 would mange so much color density and variation plus the number of moving objects with detail as shown here, but love to be shown to be wrong... sTeVE

That is very cool - thanks for the extra information, that's a game I was not aware of! sTeVE

Outstanding! That is REALLY rather spiffing, and NICE speech!!!! PURCHASED immediately! sTeVE

SDL (Silica's distribution company) was one of my main suppliers when I ran Computer Cavern in Reading. The store started out as ORDEM and were Atari only for the first couple of years (up until 87)... sTeVE

Really nice find! I love that cat/tiger sprite - using a single wider missile to extend the creature size to 20 pixels is a lovely use of slim resources! sTeVE

Yes green-ish brown, like slimy mud - mine looks NASTY! sTeVE P.S. Nice collection! -

It was in a sealed, opaque, plastic storage box, not touching the sides, kept indoors away from any direct sunlight and sat on a cotton pad, not much else I could do really to protect it 😞 Interestingly I have an STE that has in one area gone completely brown - not the areas in contact with the foam packing (it is in an original box) - but along the leading edge of the unit - looks very strange! I figure you have old equipment, it won't look new after nearly 40 years... sTeVE -
Favorite keyboard-only Atari 8-bit games
Jetboot Jack replied to pusakat's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Are any action games truly playable with the keyboard - I find that for instance Lode Runner is near unplayable compared with using a joystick. It's one key at a time that kills them compared to other 8bit machines. What am I doing wrong? sTeVE -

I have a few remaining bits of A8/ST kit that did not get disposed of with my big purge last year, one of which (an 800) I cleaned up the retrobrite way about 18 month ago. BUT I have found it has started to yellow again - and it has been in a sealed box since I cleaned it 😞 sTeVE
