  1. I like those too and find them to be good quality.  You've had problems with SNES pads?  The originals, or the newer model with the recessed logo?

    Originals.

The left/right triggers would often get knocked out of alignment, which is not surprising since they were simply two little PCB chunks held in place by thin plastic, wire and solder.

Never had the recessed one...by the time those came out I had already moved on to the Saturn (big mistake there! :ponder: )

  2. talk about a bump yeah, but I finally got this game after foxy, starscream, and adrian m told me how much I would enjoy it.. finally getting back on my feet billwise and once again spending way too much money on games. I LOVE the humor in this game, i have never felt so ENTERTAINED by entertainment... not since The Lost Vikings on the SNES at least!

Proof that games dont have to be total realism and hollywoodesque to entertain someone. Everything Brute Force SHOULD have been and much more.

Glad to hear you liked it!

Features some of the best explosions seen in any game to date as well!

I think there are some bonus levels you can download or that were included on some recent OXM demo discs as well! :)

The thing is, if I hadn't played the demo of Armed and Dangerous off the OXM disc last year, I would never have bought the game. One of those rare titles that must be experienced to get a good feeling for.

  3. I recently saw the Space Invaders and the Sega Genesis "all-in-one" controllers at a local software store.

I really wanted the SI version until I remember how poor the games are represented (skipping frames, and the changes to PHoneix as has been mentioned). Plus, it just looks cheap as in flimsy, and the buttons look to be no better than the loud chunky buttons that were featured on the NES Advantage and its ilk. Soft contact switches are no substitute for genuine microswitches. Only a mainstreamer wouldn't know the difference either!

The Genesis all in one at least resembles the old controllers, but sorry. The 6 or so games that are included on it are kind of meh. Not that the games are bad since I loved most of them on the real hardware, but by now, we've all played the hell out of Altered Beast and Kid Chameleon on various formats.

I'll go back to getting my SI fix via the NUON version. As for the Genesis controller, I'll just plug in my SG when/if the mood should strike me.

  4.

Also, does anyone remember that Hudson made controller for NES that you could plug headphones into?

I do! I do! The Sansui Joycard SSS!

Best NES controller ever, aside from the fact that it had the "simulated stereo" effect too!

Resembles the design of the original Famicom pads and has THE BEST d-pad and buttons out of all the third party NES controllers.

  5. I loved those giant walkers in Raiden 2.

The attention to detail in that game is great, I need to find a good home version of it...

There was actually a PC version of it released on CDROM back in 1999. I bought it for like $3.99 at EBGames and as far as I can tell, it's a 100% accurate port/conversion. Only problem is, I can only get it to run in a small window for some unknown reason.

And yeah, Raiden II did all the little things just right...the shrapnel from destroyed enemies was unbelievelable (it would cause ripples in the lakes and set fire to shrubbery!!), defeated enemies would crash into houses, the Giant Walkers would leave footprints in the terrain, and so forth! Viper Phase 1 also featured similar levels of destruction.

  6. I just got back from Game Stars Live event held in London and it was the first time Halo 2 has been shown and played in Europe.

I only got 1 multiplayer game which lasted 5 minutes, and it will come as no surprise to anyone that it is cool as f**k to play.

Best of all the controls are the same as before so it was instantly familiar to play.  8)

    Good to hear.

November 9 is almost upon us! :D

I'm skeptical at best. While I have always LOVED Seibu Kaihatsu's Raiden games (Raiden 1, Raiden II, Raiden DX, Raiden Fighters series, and the little seen Viper Phase 1), the news of Raiden III is both reassuring and concerning.

Reassuring because this classic series still lives. Concerning because I don't like the direction that the new generation of 2D shmups have been taking with their ridiculous "bullet hell" gameplay as seen in games like Mars Matrix, Gigawing, Esprade, and those god awful Cave shooters. The Raiden series had it right...make the game difficult but fun, and not at the expense of having the screen filled with 300 bullets to weave through.

If Raiden III does turn out to be yet another bullet hell game, ah well, at least there's Deimos Rising and Active Lancer on the Mac platform...

  8. I could've sworn that the Panasonic 3DO was the first CD based system. I believe I read it in a bit of trivia. Can anyone confirm this? :?

    No. 3D0 = 1993

    Commodore CDTV = 1991

PCEngine/TG16 had the CDROM attachment in 1989 (Capcom's Street Fighter 1, retitled "FIghting Street" was the first CDROM game for the system)., though it was an optional add-on and not the main medium.

  9. Didn't they actually code every TG-16 game, kind of like how the BSR programmed every INTV game?  Not sure about the FMV CD titles, though.

No. Other companies did make games for the PCE and TG platforms. Taito, Face, Capcom, and others all made games for the platform. In fact, Working Designs got their start on the TG side by porting some of the Japanese titles over before they sold out and went to Sega (and then Sony).

And why is MSC the worst game ever to anybody?  Granted, the ending sucks, but aside from that, it's quite good.

Who knows. The difficulty and cutesy graphics may have turned some off (there's nothing fruitier than having a boy clown who shoots magical bubbles as your main character) and the game did start out with some rather vague directions as to how one had to proceed. But after you figured it all out and got past the well, the game really began to shine.

And there should be a sequel.

    Amen to that.
