  1. I'm just wondering what the majority of 2600 fans think is the best variant of Pacman for the 2600 VCS. I myself love Pac-Man Jr, followed by Ms. Pac-Man as a close second.

The reason I like Pac-Man Jr is due to the speed. THe little Jr. Pac-Man is so fast and agile, it makes the game a joy to play, despite the large mazes!

Ms. Pac-Man is also a great game and one that will keep me hooked for hours, but the speed of the game is slower and your on-screen character just doesn't feel very "nimble."

As for the original Pac-Man, I loved it as a kid in 1983, but I have no idea what possessed me to play through the same maze over and over for hours at a time!

  2. I also happen to think that the Jag's pads are very solid and well built.

Sometimes the fire buttons can feel "mushy" but I found that this can vary from controller to controller. As it stands now, I own 3 Jag controllers and only one has mushy fire buttons...the other two have a nice tactile click which is a plus.

  3. Your site worked fine for me. How and where did you get your Computer Space arcade machine?!?! How much did it cost you?

Great collection by the way! I like how you have taken the time and effort to build shelving and storage units to house all of your gaming items.

I will make sure to do that if and when I do finish it.

  5. I originally got this game back in 1983 and I do remember the occassional glitch that you mention. It only happened a few times...the game would sometimes freeze or your little guy would fail to move in certain directions.

If I recall correctly, the game tended to freeze when the evil guy at the top of the playfield went into his divebomb sequence.

  6. Good game, but INCREDIBLY difficult!

Make sure you have a good joystick or better yet, a new Genesis pad with a crisp D-pad since you're often faced with situations where lightning quick reflexes are required.

Those damn bats can be tough!

  7. That's what I love about the 2600 games...many are tough, but never to the point of controller-throwing frustration! You are generally rewarded if you persevere!

Secret Quest, while tough, feels like a game that can be mastered, after you invest some time in it. Addictive to say the least!

I usually take screenshots using the Windows version (StellaX), but it crashes often on me and will only play the games full-screen. Can you also play full-screen on the Mac (for those times when you don't want to see the Mac desktop?) Also, have you tried it in OS X?

    ..Al

I haven't tried the OSX version, but to answer your question, yes you can certainly play in full screen mode simply by selecting the Full Screen option in the menu bar or with command-F.

The Mac version is also very stable. I've experienced NO crashes or glitches which is a necessity when playing through a game in one sitting like the infamous Dark Chambers!

I highly recommend the Mac version if at all posible! You can even configure the keyboard keys to your liking at any point! Can't do that in the NT version of Stella!!

  9. Last time I checked, Ames department stores were liquidating their inventory of Sega Pico units. Ames is a discount store franchise that has many stores in the Northeast U.S.

It's really not that hard to come across. It's essentially a Sega Master System posing as an educational machine. I also think that www.VGLQ.com may actually sell the unit and games/modules. It's really not that rare of an item...

  10. I actually received my 2600 on Easter in 1983. I still have it and it's the Black Vader model.

My parents bought it and 3 games: E.T., Star Voyager, and PAC-MAN (Pacman was the only game I really played---aside from Combat).

  11. Either that or it came out in 1983 for some sort of PC or home computer...either a C64/Vic20/Atari800/Sinclair/etc.

Dark Chambers does seem like a early 80's PC-oriented game, at least that's my observation after playing through the game last week.
