The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
madhatter667 replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Haven't pulled much out in the way of games lately... though yesterday I did find a Coleco Expansion Module, with its box at Goodwill.... got it for $3. Needs a dusting off, but doesn't seem busted. Gotta go dig out my Colecovision. -
Flashcart and Multicart List - All systems
madhatter667 replied to PsychedelicShaman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
If you made it as a wiki, and pointed the right folks towards it, the thing would explode with all kinds of info and examples. I am sure those who live in the regions where a lot of this stuff gets developed could add a ton of insight. -
I have to agree with with Ghost Soldier. For a TG16 starter, I'd pay up to $50. Do bear in mind that you could also get a Japanese system too... LOTS of games for it. However, they won't play each other region's games (cards) without modding. I think the Duo has no region lock on the CD portion.

Flashcart and Multicart List - All systems
madhatter667 replied to PsychedelicShaman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wow, I totally MISSED that part! Sorry, I must not have been entirely awake. There ARE tons of pirate Famicom carts. Though there are some that are unlicensed multis, like the Action 52, and the Maxi-15. Once again, my bad, I really should have noticed that first time through. -
Flashcart and Multicart List - All systems
madhatter667 replied to PsychedelicShaman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Actually the title of thread includes multicarts in the title, not just flashcarts. Also, he didn't mention anything about this not including pirate carts, just that this isn't the place to make an argument for, or against piracy. Unless that part about not making an argument for or against was in relation to someone loading ROMS onto their flashcart.... I may have interpreted that part wrong. Just trying to contribute as a whole. Perhaps I am being more liberal with my interpretation of the wording than others have been. There is the R4 for the DS, the Ninja DS, and likely a ton of other DS flashcarts/flash media readers. There is a ROM device for the SNES... ROM Dr. or Disk Dr... something like that. It allowed you to load ROMS on your SNES. It's not exactly a cartridge, but might be worth a mention? -
Controlling our collections in the age of emulators
madhatter667 replied to Ransom's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wait.... you guys CONTROL your collections? Ha ha ha! Mine needs some cleaning up. Most of my stuff lives in relatively organized Rubbermaid containers, and are stored out in the garage. Space is very limited where I live. Even at that rate, I have a lot of games, and consoles chilling out in my room/space, and even they are starting to pile up. I didn't buy a large enough container (yes, most of my games live in containers, even indoors) for all my Famicom games, and some of them are stacked outside their tub.... SNES/SFC are almost out of room. I have no container for my PC Engine stuff, and my NES stuff is partly out of containers because I don't have enough at the moment, nor are they large enough to hold all the carts at the moment. -

Just a general FYI, there are many more multicarts for the NES/Famicom. Yes, the PP is a cool piece of work, you'll get no argument there. BUT There have been pirate multicarts for the NES/Fami for quite some time. More for the Famicom than the NES, but they are out there. I could post some pics if wanted/needed. Plus there are some tems like the Maxi-15 and the Spectravision, and the Action 52, and there is an even more rare one, but I cannot remember who makes it at the moment. I have about 3 Famicom multis (111-in1, 300-in-1, 110-in-1... but there are repeats and hacks in there). For the NES, all I have is a 260-in-1. -
Ripping apart a PSX is easy to replace bits. I have done it many times. If you can find one, and the aesthetics suit you, plop it in a cool colored case. Be careful with the optical block cable... they get damaged easy... I accidentally trashed one once. Otherwise, it's a snap. Just make sure that you get a block from a similar series motherboard, or the cable might not reach its socket. If you get an aftermarket block, that is not a concern, it's made with a longer cable to accommodate all revisions.
-
Keep it. You can always mod chip it for cheap. Also, if the unit is having a hard time reading games, it could be that the runners on your optical block are worn out... that's a $25 part last time I checked, and that was new... you could probably find a good deck in a second hand shop for less than $5. Also, there are some games that don't quite run 100% on the PS2. If you have a copy of Thrill Kill, that would be an example of one.

Famicom & Super Famicom Japan - US adaptors
madhatter667 replied to Elvis8Atari's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Plenty of options out there. I rip out the lock out tabs on my SNES and clone consoles. This makes life easier for playing SFC. As far as Famicom goes... I own a Famicom, some clones, and an adapter (Honeybee), which often gets plugged into a clone. I would like to get another Famicom... one of the AV units... since that has a nicer output, and it would save wear and tear on my Sharp, which still has its box and inserts. If you keep your eyes open, you can probably find a pirate multicart with an adapter to plug Famicom games into the 72pin top loader. I DON'T think you need to clip your pin for the lockout on the toaster... but I could be very wrong about that. I am thinking it's NTSC, so I do not know how the region encoding works with Jap games. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Jap units never had any lockout, which would equate to needing the locout clipped on a US unit. -
Questions to those that collect video games
madhatter667 replied to ddaniels's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Are they label variations? Ports? Updates? These are all logically justifiable... that should work as a justification without too many hitches. -
Mario Adventure IN CART FORM! Yay!
madhatter667 replied to A2600's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Awesome. I've been meaning to get some games off of NES Reproductions for a while. Looks like I get another one to add to the list. -
The Rules of Video Game Collecting
madhatter667 replied to Ransom's topic in Classic Console Discussion
1) I don't worry so much about being CIB. I like to collect carts, and I like to play them. I do get a bit picky over labels and overall condition. 2) If it strikes my fancy, it's game. Sometimes, I'll talk myself out of buying something though. It's just a matter of "is it good?" "Is it rare enough to be interesting?" "Is it for a system that gets collecting priority?" 3) The system has to have enough good games to justify it being in the collection. 4) I use MAME for arcade emulation because collecting real cabs is expensive, and very space intensive. 5) Aside from a quick game fix on the go, I don't really emulate except for the above. Emulation isn't a subsitute for the real experience. 6) If the price is low enough, I'll buy something that is untested. 7) I try to spend as little as possible on the hobby. This means that I surf auction sites, and scrounge thrift stores. There will be times I'll over spend a little to get something I am really after, but as a general rule, the less I can spend the better off I am. 8)One exception is import games. For some reason I find this aspect really fun, but only for a handful of systems. I still try to keep the costs lower by surfing around to find the better deal on something...but acknowledge that this is a niche gaming area, and therefore also carries a higher price tag. 9)Give every console or cart you are going to buy a shake, and listen for anything rattling around inside. -
It does make me a little sad. I know that most of us on here are player/collectors. I always imagine that when someone is selling a large lot of games/systems from their collection, that they have fallen on hard times. People who are into this hobby I think, love what they are doing. Hard to give up something like that. And yes, I think I would have a HARD time rebuilding my stash if something bad happened. If that happened, I would probably stick to NES/Famicom, SNES/SFC, PS2/PSX, Atari 7800 (for cart compatibility), and Atari 8 bit computers. As it sits I have MUCH more than that, but those aforementioned systems get most of the love in my collecting habits.

Questions to those that collect video games
madhatter667 replied to ddaniels's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Hmmm... find a signinficant other who also enjoys video games. Perfect solution. Just make sure that you aren't into ALL the same stuff... that way you don't squabble over the consoles or cabinets! -
The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
madhatter667 replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
"Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete (psx, complete) for $13.99" This is worth way more than the $14 sticker price. If you were so inclined you could probably flip it for 4 times that much. I paid $50 for my Lunar SSSC on PSX, and thought it was an ok price. Last copy I saw of it was running more than that, by a fair chunk of change. My latest 2nd hand finds were Wing Commander and Super R-Type for the SNES. -
FC Mobile 2, coming soon...
madhatter667 replied to StoneAgeGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
If I can find the container with my FC Mobile in it, I can test out a converter with it, and report back. Depends on how far in the converter sits too... doesn't do much good if you can't get the whole unit back out. -
What about getting an A/V Famicom with a cart converter? You'll have the A/V out, and can play a ton of games, obviously including ones that were not released over here. I've thought about doing this a number of times... but I have NES, and Famicom already...so it's hard to justify dropping down for the A/V unit on a personal level. For someone who doesn't have such set ups already, it might be an option.

FC Mobile 2, coming soon...
madhatter667 replied to StoneAgeGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'd get in line for this as well. I liked the FC Mobile, if the 2nd incarnation is better than the first, why not? -
Word! I am an advocate of playing games on the original hardware too. I have emuators, I even use them from time to time... they just aren't the same. The experience might improve with a USB controller, but there is still a void left there. About the only thing I emulate on a regular basis is arcade stuff, and the reason for that is pretty obvious.

NES: The REAL Super Mario 2
madhatter667 replied to eyg2181's topic in Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) / Famicom
Man, does this bring up heat or what? Both games are good, and for different reasons. Both are legitimate Mario titles. I naturally was eposed to SMB2 USA first, since, well, that was the market I was living in at the time of release. Very fun game! Different feel, new mechanics, and the difficulty isn't through the roof. I picked up a port of SMB2 J for the GBA... had to import it of course. I also have a multi somewhere that has it... or it's built in on one of my clone systems. A lot of people just call it a graphics hack. Ha ha ha! This game is also very fun, but oh man.... it is soooooo much harder. I can't quite get through the first world yet, as I don't spend a lot of time trying to play it, since my time is eaten up by a handful of other very demanding priorities. -
What draws you to collecting classic video games?
madhatter667 replied to Ransom's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Like everyone else on here, I do it partially for nostalgia, and partly because I still find the games fun to play. I also dig the variety aspect... getting consoles I would have gotten when I was younger, if we could have afforded them. It's also neat to view how gaming has developed over the years, even within a similar hardware generation. I grew up playing the Atari 2600, NES, and SNES. Once I had my own income, and started seeing a lot of older stuff pop up in thrift stores I started collecting actively. The fun thing, I think is when you can actually focus the collection though. I haven't exactly done this yet.... But The 2600, NES, and PSX definitely hold the highest game library counts. -
Hey, what good am I if I cannot toot my own horn? I suppose SMB set the stage for the running action platformer. I just thought that SMB3 was a refinement on this formula. In terms of actual influence, I would agree that SMB is the better choice. Castlevania... more of a sprawling action/adventure for its time, I figure any game that hit in large numbers left an impact. Legend of Zelda... Neutopia, Neutopia 2, Alundra, just about any top down RPG... but then again, Dragon Warrior... I think my list was more an example of how I didn't agree with their list, as opposed to solid recommendations that should replace their titles.

World Heroes, man that was a fun one! When I moved out here back in like 1993, there was a World Heroes cab at the mom and pop deli where one of my sisters worked. Used to toss quarters into it often. I have a couple new items on my list for the Famicom Shin Megami Tensei Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti a Honeybee 300-in-1 pirate cart a Master Figher: World Warrior pirate cart and for the NES: a 260-in-1 pirate cart. I don't see these too often. I also have about 11 PC Engine titles now. Momotarou Densetsu Momotarou Densetsu II Super Momotarou Densetsu Kato and Ken Chan Wonder Momo War of the Dead Nectaris Double Dungeon Kaizen BeBall Rastan Saga II I really want to up the PCE collection as I get more money. BUT I wanted to get Splatterhouse for the Famicom first...since the guy I know who has a copy is closing up shop in a couple months (he doesn't have time to work full time, have a kid, AND run a small time game shop on the side).
