Ha ha ha... guess I get to save for a little bit (or just wait until after the holidays, and after I get a DS). Still not too bad. Another system I would love to get my hands on is a Neo-Geo unit.
It isn't that I am new to games, far from it... but I never had the chance to get a Jaguar, or a Neo Geo (although I play this on emulation), or even a Lynx (even though I really wanted one when I was younger). Just trying to fill in the gaps in the console collection.

Ouch... too bad for Sony. Guess they should have planned more, and hyped less. Too bad for all the folks who really did want one though...who knows what retarded hoops they're gonna have to jump through, just to get something that they either ordered, and partially paid for, or something that they might have thrown down for outright.

To some people, the aspect of collecting is just aesthetically pleasing. Some people LIKE to set up displays, and sort of use it as a form of "art" so to speak.
I own 17-20 different game systems last time I checked, and they all have their own merits and flaws. It's great fun, and opens up a wide variety of playing styles. That's why I collect video games.
For the longest time, I was the ONLY video game "collector" that I knew of. The first time I ran across a collector the thought "bullshit" came to mind. This was out at a Funcoland, back when they were still called that. The guy came off as abrasive, and full of it. Nothing like the folks on the boards. He also labeled himself a collector, as opposed to saying that he collected video games. To me, there is a different connotation in those two phrases. He seemed more like a prospector instead... and a poor one at that.
The idea of collecting, and what makes a collector and all that jazz seems like a sensitive topic here.

Hey guys,
I was wondering what an average price for a clean, dependable Jaguar would be? I do not own a jag yet... and it would be nice to add that to my collection (along with a Lynx... one of these days). Just itching to add something NEW to my colection in terms of hardware, and wanting to see what the online community thinks is a fair price for such an item.
Any odd things I need to look out for when shopping for a Jag? Was there a CD add on for the Jag, or was it a completely new system?
Most of the questions also apply for an Atari Lynx as well. I just don't want to do two posts, asking almost the same questions, in two separate forums.

That's funny, because from what I can tell, he's not well known outside of dorky internet circles. Over-rated perhaps, but still quite funny in my opinion.

Maddox is probably one of the most hilarious guys I have ever seen. Anyone read his book (Alphabet of Manliness)? It's the funniest $15 I have ever spent. Totally checking out this rant.

For NARC, I recommend a Game Genie.

I want to apologize to the seller of this one. For some reason I was thinking Valkyrie Profile 2, and that you were just riding the fandom of Squaresoft (hence my initial reaction)... $85 for this title shipped seems fair when compared to going rates on auction. Good luck with selling it... everything I have read points to it being a solid title (I have #2, but haven't sunk a lot of time into it).

For $20 it's worth it just for the GOlden Axe stuff and the Phantasy Star sequels. I'll have to keep an eye out for this one!

Get sick of collecting for the 2600/VCS? Nah. There is soooo much out there, that if you have the time and money, it'd be hard to get bored. I have only just started to think of other region games as a viable thing to collect (thanks Ryan!). Granted, it'd be almost impossible to collect everything that is out there for the system... but one cannot fault another for trying, no? I love the aesthetics of video games as much as I do collecting them to play. Now, I just need to stumble across some of those intriguing neon coloured carts...

I have seen people with high feedback levels "slide" a bit. It happened to my brother in law once... he was out about $150... and the guy was in China of all places... and so far no closure has been given on the case. eBay doesn't give a damn about you, and apparently Paypal does only marginally.

OK, but VPII was Square-Enix..so that is where I got confused. My bad. Rant done.

I can sort of respect the different angles. I collect because I have fun with games, and I try to preserve the hobby. I like to think that I take good care of my stuff, and I have many, many different systems. This is my cause first and foremost. I have done relatively few trades, so I don't have much experience in that department. But those that I did take part in were positive experiences (with some guys on the AA forums naturally). I wish I had the ability to rip stuff to ROM and post... but there isn't anything I own in the realm of 2600 games that isn't already up.
I can also respect the business angle. I hope to open my own store. It'll be a bit more comprehensive, and will not turn down classic era or "retro" stuff. We're actually hoping to make it the focus of the shop; not sure how that will work out yet. Everything is still prelimninary. But I wouldn't want to overcharge for classic titles, since I understand the player/collector mindset, and these sorts of people are definitely the target. It's a tough angle.
Although, those who try and nail the cheapest bargains for the highest possible resale... I have a bone to pick with that one. I do not like it, and will not use such tactics. Fair is fair... and I wouldn't charge anything more than the fair going value, and would offer a fair trade value for whatever was brought in (in accordance with completeness, functionality, aesthetics, fair going value etc.). Trying to avoid the whole pawnshop mentality... that's the key.

Many of the good finds on here are amazing...I am surprised that you guys can dig up so much cool stuff. Most of the thrifts in my area are picked through.

Is having original audio/video such a bad thing? Sure, the toploading NES had some artifacting... but that's the way it was built. I just dunno about modding old consoles like that. Modding newer stuff that is still easier to get is one thing (like a PSX ya paid $5 for).
As far as older/vintage stuff goes, I tend to take the preservation approach... I never mess with anything unless I have it in multiples.
I have a case modded PSX and PS2...but I also have original examples in decent shape as well.
So I suppose I would say, don't mod it if it is mint in box, and your only unit.

I don't think anyone is gonna cough up that much for it.
Just because it is Squaresoft does not mean that it is a)good (although most titles are pretty fun) and b) should warrant a high price.
after FFVII was released and people went all fellatio on Square was when the price hikes happened with Squaresoft games. Not everyone is a Squaresoft whore. If you can sell it to one for that price, by all means go ahead... but I don't think you'll have much luck here.

Never mind the fact that I have fully functioning arms. I could pack a couple carts, and haul a lot more in my arms.

Atari 2600 stuff:
The rarest I have is Death Trap... rated an R8 on the AA guide. Loose though. I have a handful of R5s...King Kong, Frankenstein's Monster, Crypts of Chaors, The Earth Dies Screaming (can't remember all of them off the top of my head), and a couple R7s... Ram It! being one of my favorites.

I'm with Wester on the fact that I will pick up just about anything video game related if the price is right. I collect for the fun of it...and for the preservation of the hobby. I am even drawn to oddball little bits, like clone systems. I know it's probably regarded as weird to collect clones from time to time, but I don't care...I know I am not the only pirated item collector out there. All in all, I chalk it up to a few bucks for the perpetuation of my hobby. I have passed systems on to friends for modest prices, and sometimes for nothing at all (when I own multiples...if I only own one of something, I won't pass it off, or sell it). So, I still help perpetuate the hobby in that fashion to people who are close to me and actually give a rip.

I voted no, because I plan to get on or both after the holidays... which means it's technically next year.

I hate annoying kids who go to the electronics department and do nothing but either pllay the demo games, over and over and over again, and NOT realize that someone is waiting behind them to give the demo a brief try...or they're retarded, and beat the hell out of the thing, because they don't understand how to respect an expensive piece of equipment. I'm not surprised that the greediest company on the planet would keep the console behind glass. Hell, I wouldn't blame anyone for that. If you can't respect it, you don't deserve to paly it.
Although, this has really upped my desire a bit for the Wii... now that a few people have given feedback from playing it. I wanted one anyway...so this is adding fuel to the fire.

For $10 you got it at a steal!
I have been after one of these for a while... just trying to not resort to eBay. That, and a Neo Geo AES system... but that also has a cult following, and therefore the prices are high when you find them.
-
Yeah, I agree with the cartridges having production numbers on them (combat being 01, not sure about the others). I think those are foil labels, but as far as I know aren't represented in the guides. I have a few different combat cart variants:
the foil, light red letters, dark red letters, and then copyright/trademark symbols next to the game variants. Dont know if the light/dark text variations are due to labels or to sunlight exposure....but they look fine (as in not damaged by elements).
Edit: Oh yeah, and the picture label too.

Jaguar prices?
in Atari Jaguar
Posted
I take it Songbird is a homebrew publisher? That's freakin' sweet.
It isn't that I think that a Jag is too pricey by any means, it's just that:
the holidays are coming up, and eating what disposable I DO have, and I want to get a Nintendo DS handheld as well (I work weekend security, so it is good to stay entertained).
I know the Neo-Geo systems (AES, MVS, or CD) have a hell of a cult following, and ALWAYS go for a premium (and half the time the systems are Japanese... so hooray for step down converters).
Just have a few things going on for the immediate future... perhaps a few months down the road I can splurge for a Jag with some cool shit bundled...occasionally I have seen some on eBay that are either new in the box, or really clean w/ the box. Not a bad thing to acquire by any means.
