  1. I don't remember. and I didn't check - do you remember in the C64 version if you always had to earn more money than you started with?
  2. I wrote up a little review in the "Games Beaten" thread:
  3. This thread has gone quiet, so I'll post that I recently beat Ghostbusters for both the SMS and the new Ultimate Edition homebrew for the Intellivision. Ghostbusters UE for the Intellivision is a masterwork of taking a truly classic property, putting (almost) everything that could have been in it back then into a new game and releasing it as a homebrew. The game will use Intellivoice and the ECS (if you have them) to play voice overs and enhanced music. It has more scenes from the movie, more music from the movie and adds more challenge than the classic versions did by making a few smart updates to the item selection and the debt system. They did stick to the early release endgame and omitted the stair climbing and vertical shooting level found in the NES and the SMS version, but the game is more streamlined and possibly better for it. I appreciated that it ended up actually being kind of hard to catch the ghosts in this version. Even with multiple strategies, I still miss a few here and there which adds to the replayability and challenge of what was such an impressive gaming sequence when the title released on the C64 all those years ago. On the other hand, what this version really does is show you the shortcomings of the original game. Once you've gotten used to the ups and downs of ghost extermination (and know how to use bait to stop a Marshmallow attack) you'll find a game on default settings remarkably easy. I mention that bit about the bait because when I played this game as a kid, I never knew I could reach over and press 'B' to stop the marshmallow man. It wasn't until years later that I finally read the manual and finished the C64 version of the game. As a huge Ghostbusters fan who has massive nostalgia for the original game, I am very happy with this. I'm working to win with all of the cars which is proving to be a satisfying challenge because when you continue from a previous game, you must always finish with more money than you started. So, if you buy the sports car, you've got to catch enough ghosts to pay it back before the city's PKE level reaches the critical state. I give Ghostbusters UE a 4 out 5. Without nostalgia, I might drop it down to a 3 due to the somewhat simple game loop and lack of true difficulty options, but I am still excited to keep playing it, and the little touches added make me smile whenever I catch a few ghosts. Ghostbusters for the SMS is a game that I've been meaning to really sit down and play for years. I got my vintage hardware out and even discovered that I'd acquired 2 physical copies of the game - overprepared. The game makes some interesting choices in the beginning section, giving you more options to purchase equipment some of which I believe is unique to this version. You are also given the chance to upgrade your equipment by stopping at a store on the map during gameplay. This is really cool and opens up some differences in the game, but as I played with this equipment, I discovered that it just made the game easier. It is an easy game to begin with and there are no difficulty options or post game difficulty increases, so carrying over money from a previous game makes me feel like the Monopoly man who just buys his way to victory. In the actual ghost catching sequences, the "streams" of the ghostbusters' proton packs are now pointed straight up, which means there's no way to cross the streams. It also means that it is pretty hard for the ghosts to actually escape you once you've gotten them between your laser throwing ghost cowboys. Conservative shootin Tex. Catching them in a trap rarely fails and the $$ just piles up faster than you can say I feel so funky. Which reminds me that while the music is excellent there is no speech in this version. That doesn't seem like a big deal, but as a fan of the old C64 version, I really missed the occasional computer voice encouraging me onward. The 2 sections added to the game see you climbing a staircase while shooting at/avoiding ghosts and then shooting vertically towards Gozer (misspelled in the manual and the game as Gorza). The staircase is remarkably difficult and the shooting sequence after it a little easier than expected. Since the ghostbusters didn't actually shoot lasers at Gozer to defeat him/her to end the movie, this definitely feels like an add-on. However, it does give the player a nice variety of gameplay and makes ending the game feel like more of an accomplishment than the versions released for less powerful platforms. I was pleased with this version of Ghostbusters and appreciated the extra levels at the end to give me some variety and a challenging ending to overcome. However, I spent most of my time playing as a hyper-efficient ghost catching team who could essentially upgrade my abilities at will. Extra money just made the longest section of the game borderline boring. I still enjoyed my time with the game, but I give it a somewhat disappointed 3 out of 5. In a direct comparison of both of these games, the SMS certainly has more variety and all the advantages of its hardware, but if I'm going back in for more, I'd rather play the Intellivision version.
  4. Arcade Akka Arrh 40 Atari 2600 Circus Convoy 152 HERO 2 35 Megamania 19 Atari Jaguar Cybermorph 33 Intellivision Ghostbusters UE 4 PC Battlezone (2017) 93 Slinger VR 117 SMS Columns 190 Xbox Series S/X Inkulnati 96 Pirates and Aztecs 10 I had more variety this week than I expected with a mix of emulation, classic hardware, Atari 50, VR and other modern gaming. I'm enjoying Circus Convoy more than I expected. It is really more of an adventure game where you collect items and have to figure out how to use them. The previews and release footage made it seem more like a platformer - and it does have those elements, but the moments you spend time on are really figuring out what your items can do and how to explore the convoy.
  5. I saw your post on Facebook. Thank you for sharing this here too. Will likely be easier to find again on these forums.

  7. The Pitfall hack I was thinking of is called Jungle Jane, but I can't find a link to it. I did find this other hack though:
  8. I can't think of many. This thread may have a few: Female protagonist games - Page 3 - Classic Console Discussion - AtariAge Forums If you are including hacks, there is a Pitfall hack with a female character. Jill of the Jungle? I'll link it if I can find it.
  9. I know that I went back and played the 360 version after it was popular, but it may have been before we started time tracking for modern games. I love the series and didn't know about those mods - so thanks for that tip!
  10. I've never reached Elite status in any version, but the home computer versions almost famously has no story, plot, or ending. Find the manual here: Nintendo Entertainment System Manual | Commodore C64 Manual Find a guide here: Elite - Guide - BBC Micro
  11. Come on, you're pretending now. I remember that you beat me at Tetris: Season 20 Round 5 - Tetris - NES High Score Club - AtariAge Forums You can do this. Just get in here and finally play some Columns.
  12. It seems like game 1 is "Original" and game 2 is "Flash," but I definitely noticed an extra exploding block when playing game 1 of the "beta" rom. Here's the archive with that version: sega-master-system-romset-ultra-us directory listing (archive.org) I suppose if someone has the actual cart they can clear this up for us by telling us how it plays.
  13. 39,360 playing that version. It seems like it gave me an extra exploding block through the first 9 levels compared to the other version.
  14. Hmmm . . . Mine looks just like the first 10 seconds of this video. I was playing from a flashcart on the Genesis because I also do not have a physical copy. I will try a few things. Update - I think I found the rom you are using on Archive.org. It is labeled "Columns (USA, Europe, Brazil) (Beta)." Trying it now.
  15. Hey - what exactly do you mean by Game 1? I chose Single Player - Original - Difficulty Normal - Level 0. I did not change the type of blocks. Is that Game 1? I've never really tried to play this game, so I don't have any real strategies about how to stack things up. Mostly, I'm just trying to clump groups of 3s. Planning diagonals is really hard for me. Also, I'll say that trying to get the high score picture is incredibly stressful. I know that I scored higher at least once before, but I wasn't prepared to take a pic, so I just lost that score completely. I almost want to appeal to you to change the HSC game to be the "Double Down" game within Darts in Parlour Games. It is a bit easier to snap a pic of the final score and may just be a bit more fun. While I suppose it is possible to get a perfect score, I doubt anyone would accomplish it in this club. Consider it this time or for a future HSC. Parlour Games manual: Parlourgames_sms_us_manual.pdf (segaretro.org)
  16. I haven't figured out a good way to get a pic yet, so here's a picture from when I could sense it slipping away. This doesn't display my final score which was 29,100 And here is the evidence of me playing Parlour games. World Bingo - oof. I don't know what was happening, but waiting for a slot machine to finish spinning is something that should have gone out of video games in before 1978.
  17. Atari 2600 Circus Convoy 13 Intellivision Ghostbusters UE 72 SMS Columns 69 Parlour Games 40 Xbox Series S/X Control 165 Inkulnati 180 Star Wars Racer 54 I had almost no gameplay time until Sunday when I just sorta vegged out and did nothing but play games all day. I now own Circus Convoy which means combined with Ghostbusters UE that I've purchased 2 relatively expensive homebrews for classic systems this month - let the good times roll. SMS time is for the HSC. I dunno about Columns. I might be a "Tetris Only" kinda guy when it comes to block falling games. I can't really seem to make sense of a strategy here besides just the obvious 3 block chains. Diagonals are hard.
  18. Super hard to get a picture on the CRT. Pause only works during actual gameplay. Does it display the high score anywhere?
  19. I never got the hang of those skating events. Even getting a 6.0 seemed hard bitd, or you'd get it from pure luck just wagging the joystick around. Always felt awesome to get a 10.0 in "Hot Dog" though.
  20. It worked. It's just a problem with stupid QR codes. I hate them. In this case, it generated a string to the audacity website with a suffix. It wouldn't navigate there automatically on my phone for some reason (because QR navigation is terrible), so I took the string and typed it into a web browser on my computer. Of course, that didn't work and gave me an error. Tried again on the phone - error. On my phone, I had to manually type https:// in front of the string it generated and then tap it and choose "navigate" or "go" or whatever the fnck. Then when I logged in it didn't generate the error and registered my copy. Once your copy is registered, you go to the "manage" section of the website. From there you can click a button to email yourself a download code or click another button to "sell" your copy of the game. Why this couldn't be explained before purchasing, I don't know. I already started the game in Stella, and it works.
  21. I got the game. It does indeed come with a QR code. I tried to go to the address, but it doesn't work. It says it is registering the game, but then tells me it hit an error. There is absolutely no reference to the digital copy in any of the documents that came with the game, and no instructions on how to contact Audacity to get the digital copy.

  23. I did a little better. This game is weird. I have fun when I play it, but it is really hard to get better. I think a lot depends on memorization and starting position when engaging specific groups of enemies. 817,000
