  1. Trip - I don't know if I would say tarnish, but I certainly can understand why you would think I would from my post.

You forgot Space Invaders, and I thought that all the Pac spin offs were done (without asking) by Namco's American sister company.

I recognize Japan's early contribution to gaming, but before the crash they were only making contributions in our market. After the crash, they just about became the market.

I also find it interesting that the Japanese domination of the American console market closely parallels the rise of Eastern fiction elements in mainstream American culture. Interesting in a "If I have to watch one more Power Rangers I'll . . ." kinda way.

Goochman - What was the VAX mail?

  2. Probably has been discussed over and over so forgive me.

    But . . .

Does anyone else out there resent the fact that after the introduction of the NES, we had to replace refined western (American) fiction icons with corny Japanese characters that, frankly, have never appealed to me.

I never liked SMBros. Sure I played it and appreciated the ressurection of the console market at the time, but my feelings were always dilluted by the fact that I just thought Mario was a stupid character. Not to mention the species ambiguous villians and laughable character names for almost all NES games.

Zelda was brilliant but fell victim to the same problems that SMB did. The NES versions of the Final Fantasy games revealed these problems at their worst (and continue to IMO). Even the incredibly addictive Tecmo Bowl was played in spite of its obvious Japanese origins.

Which leads to my question/dream. If the 7800 had been able to come out a year earlier (beating the NES to the market) could Atari ever have dominated in Nintendo's place. Would we have been able to play side scrollers with villans that actually looked villanous? Would we have had RPGs with characters that were more like Frodo than Hello Kitty? Could the sports game craze have been kicked off without a 4th down "Punt Kick"?

Even with some competition in the marketplace, Japanese game developers might have considered toning down the overtly Japanese nuances of their games (and hired an American editor).

But alas - NES was the IT. Now I am just left to wonder and dream.

BTW no offense to UK and European (Aussie) developers you guys were definitely NOT part of the problem.

  3. I NEED A MENTOR

Now before everyone hits the back button on their browser, I want to point out that I am a 28 year old college graduate and working professional who is successful in his field (advertising). Additionally, I want to work for free.

That should put me in a slightly different category than the 15 year old over-excited kids that just want to re-make FFVII. In contrast, I want to bring back Pitfall and Summer Games (Wipes Egg Off Face).

I need someone who can give me some guidance and take an interest in my developing (programming) skills. I, like many others, have tried to get into game dev. before, but have had a hard time setting realistic goals for myself and don´t know what key areas to work on.

Honestly, it is as simple as that. Feel free to contact me with any constructive comments you might have; especially if you´re interested or experienced as a game dev. mentor.

    Many Thanks
