    16)  ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission (PSVR)

Probably the most fun I've had with a full game in VR.  Games like Superhot and Beat Saber are perfect for those quick, frantic bits of fun perfect for showing off the tech, but this game is my favorite (to date) full, "traditional" type of game.   A nice, old school style 3D platformer that's a solid game first, and then allows the VR to enhance the overall product.

I know right!  I want more.  Either a true sequel or copycats would be fine with me.

Paddles!  I played a bunch of paddle games this week.  Drive is a homebrew that features the twitchy-racey kind of action I really like.  That one is going in my regular paddle game rotation, and I may even order a cart of it from the AA store.  Kaboom!9, Sadoom! and Sadoom!+ are hacks that essentially give you harder versions of Kaboom to play.  The best one of the group is Sadoom!+ which starts you on level 7 and lets you continue up past level 8 to 9, 10, 11, etc (if you can get there).  Secret Agent is an unreleased game from Data Age that is sort of a combo of Kaboom gameplay and Music Machine.  I wouldn't call it a great game, but I was pleasantly surprised.  They also made a neat little attempt at composing a rip-off of the James Bond theme which was enjoyable.

  3. The latest baffling move is the decision to remove the wishlist feature from the store when browsing on the web or on mobile.  What a head scratcher!  I didn't think things could get worse, but now my primary method of browsing the PS Store is eliminating features that are on every other online store.  So weird.

  4. That's it!  I was successfully speeding up and slowing the emulation though, so I guess I ended up pushing both.  Anyway, seems like something should change with this setting.  I knew what to do and thankfully noticed that there were a ton of screenshots on the desktop before explorer.exe got all borked.  Someone else who isn't quite as experienced might actually think Stella crashed Windows.

  5. I was pushing Alt+S and Alt+Shift+S because in the settings I saw that they were used to slow down and speed up the emulation.  I guess Alt+S is dual mapped by default?

Oh and as you can see, it was capturing more than one snapshot every second.

  6. I was just messing around with the release for the first time, and as I played it generated hundreds of screenshots onto my desktop.  I was changing the graphics and emulation settings heavily testing different configurations for Kaboom, so I got more Kaboom screenshots than I can count.  This is actually preventing my desktop from loading and explorer.exe from responding at all.  I had to browse the folder structure in edge to even figure out what happened.  I used the command line to del Kaboom*.* and wipe them all out.  Then logged out and back in and things are back to normal, but that was really weird.  Is it possible I have some sort of auto-screenshot setting turned on that captures every frame or something?  I just installed the software today.

No worries. You can safely buy a new display based solely on the quality of the display itself. No need to worry about the ports. There are plenty of external options to get analog into the digital domain and onto an HDMI plug.

Yeah, if you like having a 1.x second lag (or more) on your video games.  If you don't then there are actually very few options.

AND - As others have stated, just because there is a coax input for RF doesn't mean it is analog RF.  Analog RF is now even rarer to find on a new TV than Composite.  Its no wonder since there are no more analog TV broadcasts at all (in the USA).  At least I think we stopped that, right guys?

And then when one multiplies potential profit against risk*competing products?  It's dismal, unless one has a new niche, or social media type viral boost help, or a legit home run.

I know some pro game dev guys who have put serious effort into mobile several times.  There is an initial flurry of downloads, and some percentage of those buy, or pay to play.  Most don't, or will on occasion.  After that initial, "hey it's new, try it" bump, everything after that is a long grind with diminishing returns.

Because of this, it makes a lot more sense to develop multiple more shallow apps, get very broad appeal, make them sexy and addictive, tie in to some pop culture where possible, and build an income off the long tail of casual players willing to view an AD, or pay to play.  Wash, rinse, repeat for every small revenue boost, and wash again when someone else clones your stuff, and again as it all kind of fades...

The product of that today is a free sea of shitty games with some real gems mixed in there.  Many people are looking to play what their friends play too, because sorting through it, or not having a shared experience isn't worth it.  This all favors established players and those who have social media / culture tie-ins.

And here in the USA a surprising number of people are mobile only, maybe console too, and if they have a console, it's an older one, types.  Numbers on that are growing as basically flat wages up against diminishing higher wage jobs get backfilled with minimal wage type jobs.  Zoomers are particularly impacted right now and things like Covid aren't helping.  (Let's not go political.  Those are just socio economic realities in play right now that do affect gaming.)

Mobile is cheap ass when one looks at overall spends for a month, and the phone is multi-purpose.  An increasing number of people in my circle get whatever high data, unlimited plan they can find, and use their mobile for basically everything.  Attach it to the TV for viewing, game on it where ever, do Internet, pay bills, stay in touch on social media, the whole nine.

Mobile is a damn tough place to make a living right now, unless one has some cred, or other tie in as I mentioned above.

100% - here is a story that proves your point:  https://www.gdcvault.com/play/1025766/1-500-Slot-Machines-Walk

Those guys tried very hard to release a high quality mobile title and no one bit.  So, on a whim they created a system that would auto-generate terrible slot machines every day.  The story was surprising to me, but fits with your point perfectly.

    Quite simply, wire as following:

    Keypad 1 - 4/5 & 6/5

    Keypad 2 - 4/5 & 7/5

    Keypad 3 - 4/5 & 8/5

    Keypad 4 - 3/5 & 6/5

    Keypad 5 - 3/5 & 7/5

    Keypad 6 - 3/5 & 8/5

    Keypad 7 - 2/5 & 6/5

    Keypad 8 - 2/5 & 7/5

    Keypad 9 - 2/5 & 8/5

    Keypad Clear - 1/5 & 6/5

    Keypad 0 - 1/5 & 7/5

    Keypad Enter - 1/5 & 8/5

    Button 1 - Upper (both sides) - 6/5 & 8/5

    Button 2 - Lower (left side) - 7/5 & 8/5

    Button 3 - Lower (right side) - 6/5 & 7/5

    Joystick Up - 2/5

    Joystick Right - 3/5

    Joystick Down - 4/5

    Joystick Left - 1/5

...then add a secondary set of (4) micro-switches, only hit far into the diagonals, so that

    Joystick Up/Right - 2/5 & 3/5 (from the factory Up and Right micro-switches), plus additionally 9/5 from the added Up/Right micro-switch

    Joystick Down/Right - 4/5 & 3/5 (from the factory Down and Right micro-switches), plus additionally 9/5 from the added Up/Right micro-switch

    Joystick Down/Left - 4/5 & 1/5 (from the factory Down and Left micro-switches), plus additionally 9/5 from the added Up/Right micro-switch

    Joystick Up/Left - 2/5 & 1/5 (from the factory Up and Left micro-switches), plus additionally 9/5 from the added Up/Right micro-switch

It works here, and achieves the "pure diagonal angles": of 45, 135, 225 & 315 degrees, tested with Tennis:

    yAYIF5.jpg

When removing the "added" (4) micro-switches (or simply not installing them), then the diagonal angles achieved are 67.5, 157.5, 247.5, & 337.5 degrees.

And @wongojack the "stock" photo from my website was simply posted as an example of what such an Intellivision controller built by me would look like...i.e. housing style, control layout, and the likes.

I like this picture much better :)

The problem with making a new Intellivision controller is quite simply the 16-way joystick...which doesn't exit outside of Intellivision controllers.  When people reference simply "adding diodes," usually they are referring to either making a pinout/wiring adapter that allows for the use of some existing controller (Atari or SEGA or the likes) with an Intellivision, or in reference to using single pole push-button switches for the 12 keypad buttons and/or the 3 side buttons on a custom controller, versus using double-pole switches (which wouldn't require any diodes), as in how the existing Intellivision controllers work, and are wired.

So I had a chance to look into the Intellivision's controller wiring tonight, and after some actual physical and electrical testing here, I've determined that it would be no problem to create a custom arcade quality controller, with actual arcade components...that is completely passive (requiring no power, electronics, or witchcraft) with either a 4-way or 8-way joystick, 12 button keypad, and 3 buttons...but to create a 16-way joystick...that's a whole different animal.

It could look something like this:

    xJS0bJ.png

...but with 1 less button, different artwork, and with different colored components.

Nice stock photo.  You are great at "Internet!"  Also, you know your Sh!+ based on all your other designs, but rein it in a bit.  Maybe you are right about a passive controller, but you need to account for the 3 buttons AND directions.  Build one yourself for real and then show us what can be done.  Mine was certainly no innovation.  It required power for the gate to handle the signals for directions.  I chose a design that already incorporated batteries to compensate.

  11. I built one once.  It was a PITA.  I still play with it.  My advice is to abandon the 16 directions.  If you want 16 then play with the original controller.

This thing is awesome for Dreadnaught Factor and some others.  I've thought about making more, but I don't know if the effort to cost ratio really makes sense.  I believe @grips03 has made more than a few and perhaps could be persuaded to make more.  Send him a message to find out.  I probably couldn't be bothered to make one for less than a ridiculous amount of like $200.  You'd probably hate it at that price too.

I had forgotten about that. She really enjoyed Seawolf but just moved and fired like crazy. I remember her playing one incredibly long game and getting an unheard of score while I was working on something and not really paying attention. Turns out she died twice with only one ship left which rolled the counter backwards to the maximum number of ships instead of zero. Fun times. She's 21 and a senior in college now. Time flies.

Now THAT is the type of story to show up for.  Brilliant!  You just made my day, week, year!

    A 6-month update:

6 months?  The thread is from 2016

Buying patterns for modern systems have changed in the last 4 years as GamePass is paid for and dominates my modern gaming.  My Steam purchases have tailed off because so much is readily available on GamePass.  Vintage purchases are about the same as 2016.  However COVID has spiked prices and interest for vintage stuff.  I buy homebrews for old systems and make the occasional hardware purchase.  It probably evens out, but I'm trending modern at the moment.  Steam gets confusing because there is more and more vintage stuff there.  I recently purchased the Genesis collection for example.

I've tested just over 20 carts so far. It's kind of a drag to have to press the reset button every time I insert a new cart and turn the power on, but the system works fine otherwise. I love the nice, crisp image.  :D

Does that work?  I've been unplugging the HDMI cord every time.

I could swear that I watched a video of your interview.  I was talking to someone from Brazil recently and thought about it.  Went to find it and came up empty.  Is a video of this interview "out there" somewhere?

I was inspired by @Nintendo64 and got out Kaboom and some other paddle games.  I got a new personal best on Kaboom, but I was going for 30k, so I fell a little short.

Tac-Scan and L-5 are recent acquisitions, and although I had played them before, they are nice carts to have.  Tac-Scan especially is such a nice and unique game for the era, and the 2600 version is a great port.

I like to play Circus Atari on game 4.  The rounds are long and you can kinda chill out and just play.

  17. I finished the story in Resident Evil 7 for PSVR.  I also played through the free DLC.  I had a lot of fun with this game.  It was a great update to the RE formula and a very enjoyable game to play in VR.  The free DLC was pretty awesome too.  It was the perfect little topper to play after the end of the main story.

    Edit - Corrected to RE7

  18. You guys should consider a Windows port of this for Steam.  I know you'd have to drop the licensed characters, but the sheer rarity of being able to play this game at home would definitely help sell it even if it didn't have the Pac-Man licensed attached.
