Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: 542 minutes

    Star Wars Squadrons: 133 minutes

What Remains of Edith Finch: 112 minutes

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (The Telltale Series): 45 minutes

    Surviving Mars: 10 minutes

    iOS

    Microsoft Solitaire Collection: 28 minutes

I've played both Edith and Guardians in the last year (or so).  I liked them both well enough.  Guardians was a nice story and the soundtrack was cool.  However, I think some of the songs were removed in the version I played (on Steam).

That sounds very similar to the SNES version, but that one had passwords. Still, those rope-jumping sequences pretty much ruin the game, which is otherwise fun and very nice-looking (at least on the SNES).

And the physics also made no sense, because the enemies scrolled with the screen, rather than with the game world -- a lot like the ghosts in the famously disastrous staircase sequence in Ghostbusters NES.

I don't know why, or how, a game with so much obvious TLC allowed something so fundamentally joyless to be part of the final build.

There is a password system that allows you to start at the beginning of a level.  So, if you hit a "game over" you can at least begin at the start of level X.  However, it still isn't enough because you have to go through and collect all the treasures and THEN start the ropes (where you will never succeed on your first try).  I think at one point on level 6 I lost 20-24 men, and after each "game over," I had to play the whole level again.  What makes it worse is that (I mentioned before) the Phoenix won't display correctly on my TVs.  I was running it through an HDMI to composite converter which was adding enough delay that it made the ropes section almost impossible.  So to get through level 6, I had to connect directly with HDMI, but that means no sound - <hrmph>

BUT . . . as you say, the rest of the game seems SO well put together.  I was genuinely enjoying running around and finding the various treasures.  After the first three or so levels, I was ready to declare this the greatest Coleco game of all time.  But then . . . it got harder and decided it hated me.

Picked back up with RE7.  It's a nice update to the RE formula, and I am really enjoying playing it in VR.  I'm not sure how great a game it would be without the VR though.

    Edit: Updated!

I finished the main story and the free DLC that lets you play as Chris Redfield.  I really had some fun with this one.  Good game for Halloween season too (if there is such a season).

I think I'm done with this game.  I made it to level 7 of 10, but every level ends with a sequence where you have to jump from vertical ropes while lava rises below.  The controls are extremely precise and it is incredibly easy to NOT catch the ropes (and die).  Plus, the sequences require you to memorize the layout and enemies to be successful.  That combination of being forced to repeat and memorize while a core game mechanic is extremely touchy makes for some very unenjoyable gameplay.  I just don't think I can make myself do it anymore.

You may well be right but by the same token, my known audience already know what the book is about so the title becomes somewhat irrelevant to them anyway.

I will buy a digital copy just to support you Mike.  This thing pretty much crashed me listening to the RGR podcast, and I miss hearing you there.  Saying that - I will likely never read a digital copy.  I'd prefer a physical copy, and I would be willing to pay $30 or more to secure it.

I really enjoyed Black Widow as well. The funny thing is after I played the game, I wondered what the original control mapping for this game was. Are you saying for the Atari 2600 they use two controllers? One joystick on the first controller to move, and the other joystick and the second controller to shoot the weapon in whatever direction you pointed it in?

Its also funny that you pointed out the soundtrack, because that was one of the first things I noticed while playing Moonsweeper. I thought the track playing was really good and it instantly gave an 80's feel to the game. Thanks for the other suggestions, I will try some of them out this week.

That is good to know. So should I list it as (PS1) Atari Anniversary Edition Redux - (black widow), or should I have just listed it as Atari 2600 - Black widow? I just want to make it easier on you to tally the total game times for the week. Thanks for adding up the game minutes for the week, I really appreciate it.

From what I could tell, the Atari Anniversary Edition Redux (PS1) actually plays the Atari arcade versions of the included games, not the Atari 2600 versions so if you want to list minutes separately, you would divide those 25 min into the arcade versions of Black Widow, Centipede and Pong.

Regarding Black Widow - it was never released for the 2600, 5200, 8-bit computers, Colecovision, 7800, or any other home system that I know about.  I've only ever played it as an arcade game.  The original control scheme was like Robotron where the left stick controlled movement and the right stick allowed you to fire in 8 directions.  I've had a lot of fun playing it in MAME with a real arcade control panel and in the Xbox 360 Gameroom where you can use the twin sticks on the 360 controller.

If it was me, I would have just listed that time individually for the games maybe like:

    Arcade

    Black Widow 15

    Centipede 10

    Pong N

    Road Blasters N

    Atari 2600

    Moonsweeper N

I didn't play much this week, but like I stated last week, I wanted to try out some atari games on the compilation discs I have.

    PS1

Atari Anniversary Edition Redux -                                                   25 minutes         I played black widow, which I really enjoyed. This game is a fun shooter, that I used a PS2 controller with, where you press the buttons to shoot in different directions.  I also played Centipede, another shooter which I really enjoyed  but I was not good at this game and found it pretty difficult as well. Lastly I played pong, which I really got into, and can understand how people could get  into the competitiveness of this game when it was first released.

Midway Presents Arcades Greatest Hits The Atari Collection 2 -   10 minutes  I played Roadblasters which is a really fun game where you drive around shooting cars and trying to obtain gasoline to keep progressing through the levels. This game kind of reminded me of Spyhunter, another game that I really enjoy, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Doesnt Count, but I also played the PS2 Activision Anothology for     10 minutes.  I played Moonsweeper which is on the Atari 2600, and I really enjoyed this game. This was a really fun game that I wish I found a long time ago, and I will definitely be revisiting this game.

With compilations like this where they are emulating (or attempting to emulate) the original system, we usually just log the time for the original game and the original platform.

BTW Black Widow is brilliant if you can play it as a twin stick game.  It is an overlooked classic.  Centipede on the other hand is a classic that NOT underrated - very well known.

The Activision Anthology for PS2 is pretty awesomesauce.  I love the soundtrack that plays during that one, and the game selection is great.  I still go back and play it every once in a while even though the emulation is a bit outdated now.  If you have that collection, you should definitely try more of the Activision classics for the 2600.  Some of my top games are HERO, Megamania, Seaquest, Pitfall!, Pitfall II, Frostbite, Beamrider, and Chopper Command, but there are a ton of great games on there including some of the other Imagic classics like Demon Attack, Atlantis, Cosmic Arc and . . . well Moonsweeper.

Thanks! that did help me get through the ropes on lvl 5, but sadly I just lost what must be 20 or even 24 men on the ropes on level 6.  My problem with this game is that it is way too easy to just miss one of the ropes.  Unlike any other game I've ever played, you can't press up or grab too early or it seems to be an instant miss.  The timing to grab the ropes in mid-air is way too precise.  It could also be that because I have to play on my Phoenix with an HDMI to composite adapter that I am getting some delay.

sigh . . . Its a good game, but the rope sections make me completely forget about the fun I was having exploring around and collecting treasures.  I may just write down the codes from that video and skip every rope section.

Update - I have one TV where I can plug directly in with HDMI, but the sound doesn't work.  Anyway, when plugged directly in with HDMI, I was able to complete the problematic section on lvl 6 in short order.  I guess the converter is adding enough lag to give me problems.

    Antarctic Adventure 51

Front Line (Standard Controller Edition) 24

    JETPAC 8

    King & Balloon 14

    Monkey Academy 34

    Moonsweeper 25

    Pacar 9

    River Raid 9

    Skiing 3

    Smurf Gargamel's Castle 13

    Subroc Super Game 7

Sydney Hunter Caverns of Death 117

    Sydney Hunter Sacred Tribe 36

    Threshold 30

    Time Pilot 33

    Txupinazo! 15

    Zaxxon Super Game 67

Lots of time in SHCOD, but I got to one part where the jumps off of ropes with a rising lava floor was really hard.  I guess I may try again someday, but I also might go looking for a code to just skip that level.  A surprise in this list was Monkey Academy.  It is a game that combines arithmetic and platforming.  I was skeptical, but I really kind of enjoyed doing division problems and simultaneously playing a simplistic version of DK Jr.

  10. I've always thought of SG-1000 HERO as a sort of re-design experiment.  He wears a jetpack instead of a helicopter to start with.  There must have been at least some creative discussion about how to make it look like an updated version.  I suspect all of the reasons already listed were (even if briefly) taken into account.

Stuff like this probably all mattered

    • Audience
    • Skill of the development team (or individual)
    • Personal preference of developers
    • Fit with the platform
    • Estimated cost

I think the approach to being creative with a port is a positive one, and today I appreciate the variation that is offered by the SG-1000.  For example, Coleco HERO looks almost the same as the C64 HERO, but SG-1000 HERO is something new to discover.  That Congo Bongo makes me think about how they re-designed Zaxxon for the 2600.  Looks totally different, but perhaps the gameplay is better for it?

However, when you stack them all up like that, the approach they took definitely looks like a disadvantage for the SG-1000.  Of course, there were no consumers actually given the realistic option of choosing between purchasing a Coleco/Adam or SG-1000 right?  Were both of them readily available in any region?

I have to admit I'm intrigued, despite the price and lack of analog outs. I noticed that it plays Atari 2600 games as well -- does it do that through the native cartridge slot, or require an adapter? A zero-lag, HDMI-capable system that plays Atari would be an interesting thing to have.

It only accepts Colecovision carts natively, and it does not currently accept Atari 2600 carts.  It has a built in SD slot that lets you load roms for any core you want which is the current method of playing 2600 titles.  They have announced plans to sell a cart adapter.  I actually haven't tried the 2600 core at all since the first week I got the thing.  It was ok, not as good as the current version of Stella, but certainly more than passable.  There have been several updates to the core since then too.

I'm not sure if it is a choice anyway as it seems that pre-orders are now officially closed (thread below).  And honestly, I think I would give the thing a C+ anyway.  A big problem for me is that it won't display correctly on either of my main HDMI displays.  One of them just says something like "invalid format" and the other makes this harsh clicking noise behind the gameplay.  There's also a problem where it won't switch off properly and you have to unplug the HDMI cable each time you power it down.  I use it with an HDMI to composite adapter.  Don't get me wrong, there is A LOT of good in there, and I'm not going to return it or anything, but it isn't the answer to all your classic gaming needs or anything like that.

    Very impressive.

I love the amount of respect and care that's put into this collection.

You can see this man takes good care of his games.

Noticed a boxed Sears Cannon Man and Math Gran Prix in there too.

    Many thanks for sharing.

I noticed the Sears stuff too.  And of course the S. American items are unusual to see.  Great collection!

The vid also made me go hunt down that KC Munchkin Supercharger homebrew by Mr SQL.

Yeah, we choose to let the pre-orders opened so we could try to hit 200 copies

If you are pre-ordering Dead Tomb, a email will be sent to you when the game is ready to ship so you can pay the remaining amount.

Welp, I did my part and placed a deposit.  Hope that the game ships soon-ish.

This is a fun game, I actually just finished it in the past year for the first time.

It seems like the both you of really like to play the Atari 2600 allot. I really need to try to play some of the Atari compilation games I have this week.

This week I will also try to play some of the Colecovision as well on the compilation discs I own . I have never heard of the Collectervision Phoenix, is that a console or a compilation of Colecovision games?

I have never heard of these systems before, is the Inerton pre NES as well?

Also thanks for doing these lists I really appreciate you putting in the effort to track all the game times.

The Collectorvision Phoenix is a homebrew console!  Pretty amazing right?  It plays original Coleco carts as well as homebrews that require the Super Game Module or the FA18 upgrade chip.  You can order a Phoenix if you want to from the Collectorvision website.  They are going to do another run of Xhundred consoles to give another set of people to have access.
