What's the Worst Console You Ever Played?
wongojack replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Hey this thread is back! I think about this post all the time . . . teaching me everything I didn't know I hated about the PS3 launch edition - LOL. As I mentioned earlier, the Guitar Hero point definitely rings true for me, but I waited a long time before buying a PS3 and got my GH fix elsewhere. Fast Forward to 2020 and the PS3 is probably the least useful "modern" console that I own. I kept the library small and only ever bought 1 controller for it (I do have a PS2 adapter though). I've got a few games for it still that I don't have for any other console, but that number is smaller than any other console that I own (from any era). Also, I wouldn't have guessed this at launch, but playing Blu Rays just isn't as useful as it once was. It came in handy back then though. Bottom line - I think I'm converted and willing to put a vote in for the PS3 as the "worst console I've ever played" even though that is waaay too extreme of a statement to actually describe my experience with it. -
Way to transfer files from a PC to Commodore Computers?

Interesting, I read the description . . . It says you just need a regular serial cable, but it clearly shows the 15xx cable in the picture. -

I can't imagine that an RPi4 project with everything included is really all THAT much cheaper than 140Eu. Is it? -
I voted for the rest of the world. Here's where I stand on this. I don't care where a game is from, but usually when I can tell it came from Japan, I don't like it as much. If I were to list out my top games of all time it might look like this: Pitfall! Pirates! The Legend of Zelda Wing Commander Tomb Raider Resident Evil Madden NFL 200x God of War Mass Effect Batman Arkham xyz So, I think 2 of those are Japanese games, but none of them are from genres that Japan seems to specialize in. I play everything, but my genre preference tends to lead me away from side-scrollers, 1v1 fighters, shmups, and jrpgs. I kinda think that I've played enough games in those genres already, so anything I missed and didn't play because it wasn't good enough to be localized for me seems ok to just let go. Besides genre, where Japanese games start to dip for me is in the story department which has become more important in the last 20 years. Japan produces a lot of fiction and some of it like the critically acclaimed film "Shoplifters" is excellent. However most of it seems very culturally distant and doesn't really ever hold my attention.

Neat! I bet you could use those unpopulated PCBs as something to help clean out dirty cart slots (if they can't be used for homebrews).

I haven't touched my RPi since I started this thread, but I did some more thinking about it and plenty of reading on retropie.org.uk. Note that since I started this thread, it seems the wiki on GitHub has been officially moved to retropie.org.uk. You can still read the wiki articles in the docs subfolder, but the wiki is no longer in use. Here's a question - is there any rival or other project besides Retropie to build these images? What are the alternatives? If for example, I only wanted a specific version of MAME, or I wanted to experiment with beta versions of individual emulators. Are there any non-Retropie instructions out there that I could read?

Best Nintendo System(s) (In Your Opinion)

Yeah, I've heard reports here on AtariAge of brand new games having a problem. Thread: Besides that thread, I have heard other reports on Facebook groups and stuff of people with A LOT of Wii U games that fail. I'm not sure how many are actually certified as brand new, but it is definitely more than just a coincidence.

NES Wii "Game of Advance" For me, the whole 16-bit era just feels like a repeat of the 8-bit with more color. I own systems and flashcarts for that whole era, and I can rarely ever make my self actually play those games. Even the arcade stuff just kinda feels uninteresting. -
I can sometimes sit on used game purchases and not play them for a long time. In the case of Wii U games though, you should test them. Wii U disks have a very high failure rate.

I Destroyed a Nes Game......
wongojack replied to 2600Ibarelyknewher's topic in Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) / Famicom
If it works, it doesn't matter how it looks. Some general advice would be to "heat the work not the solder." So you put components in place then push your iron against and wait. When the work gets hot, you can apply solder and everything should fuse together in a smooth liquidy pool that cools as soon as you remove your iron. It looks like you probably could have waited a little longer before applying solder. -

Glad to hear that it is working. Post a picture of your repair! -

This is totally fixable, but you won't get perfect step by step instructions from anyone. Here's my advice - don't take any advice without testing it yourself. Step 0 - Get a different copy of the same cartridge Step 1 - Buy a Multimeter Step 2 - Do a conductivity test (aka short; aka "beep") around the missing components and compare to the "good" copy Figure out how they were supposed to connect before this thing got ripped outta there. Your job is now to essentially restore the connections that were there before. As Keatah says, it will take work on both sides of the board. The advice you've been given is A. Install a battery holder - this should cover the gaping wounds on the top side of the board <- this is on the front B. Hook it to the next component in line - aka restore the connections that were there before <- this is likely on the back Only someone with the thing in their hands inspecting the current damage will know exactly how to put this back together. You can figure it out if you take a breath and do some inspection before, during, and after your work. About diodes - they are used to restrict polarity to a specific charge in a circuit. Basically, they only let electrons flow in one direction. They are usually there to prevent some sort of accidental reverse polarity from flowing to components. In this case, I would assume the positive voltage from the battery would be connected to the positive end of the diode and then current would flow from there to the rest of the board. Diodes are marked with a dark band near the far edge of one side of their cylinder. This is called the "cathode terminal." Connect positive voltage to the terminal farthest from the dark band. In this case, I think if you got the connection reversed, it would just mean you'd be bypassing the diode and send the battery voltage straight to the board. It would probably work both ways. BUT - I would test everything I am saying for yourself because I'm just a doofus on a website multi-tasking and nothing happens to me if your game is damaged even more. -
Wii U Games To Be Ported To The Switch
wongojack replied to Oldschool80skid's topic in Nintendo Switch
I own a physical copy of Pikmin 3 for Wii U, and I don't own a Switch. I've actually never played it, but I own it - LOL -
If soldering is really the problem then you can probably repair it or have it repaired easily. Someone like @-^CrossBow^- may be able to help.

Are you impressed by the PS5 or the XSX so far?
wongojack replied to IntelliMission's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I usually buy a $60 game like once every NEVER. I made a rule years ago that I can't buy a game for more than $25 because I never play it until it is that cheap anyway. The way they got me was with the $1 upgrade. Then as I used Gamepass, I realized that it was eliminating Steam purchases for me. I keep a running list of stuff that comes to Steam first and wait for it to go on sale. This isn't usually AAA stuff, just like Undertale, Bloodstained, and other stuff like that. Well, Gamepass started to add a bunch of things that were on that list. So now, they've got some stuff I want that is AAA, and some stuff I want that is lower tier. Plus the other games I already own (which is a lot). Basically it gives me access to more games than I can possibly play, and while the selection doesn't quite hit everything I want, I was surprised about how good it really is. With the $1 upgrade offer, it is definitely saving me some money and has stopped some rando digital purchases. At $15 a month, I agree that it could be a bit of a stretch. For someone who buys multiple new AAA games a year it is absolutely a good deal to buy it a year at a time. $180 is 3 AAA games. Oh and then there's the whole - "you get it on PC too" thing that is especially nice for those lower tier games. -
The seller sent you a return shipping label . . . where is it?
wongojack replied to wongojack's topic in Auction Central
Yep, eBay. I'm not on mobile.
