Hard Drive Installable ST Games?
DarkLord replied to Tempest's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I wish there was a WHDLoad for the ST! Didn't somebody attempt that once? I've not heard anything from it in a long time though. Anyways, I guess we could just start our own list here, with what experience each of us has had... For me the following works: Ultima 6 Space Quest series (1,2, 3). (actually, I believe that just about any Sierra game will) Hitchhikers (again, I think most Infocom games will) Bards Tale (but requires one of the CDs to be in the floppy, IIRC) There are some that will run from HD, but then don't quit out cleanly. Star Raiders does that for me here. I think I have more but I would like to double-check before I list them. Hopefully others will post some examples as well. -

I've got a Mega STe as well. As was seen in an earlier thread though, I've got to get some repair work done on it. Need a new P/S too. I agree with the other poster, the Mega STe case is the best looking (and functional) of any that Atari put out. Would have loved to have seen the original Falcon in a Mega STe/TT style case, and with the best of the TT mixed in with the best of the Falcons' features. That would have really rocked!

New ST owner with a couple of questions
DarkLord replied to Lord Thag's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Yeah, I figured that out, I've been copying games like mad. I have about a hundred on disk What I'm asking is WHAT to download in regards to productivity and programming. Most of the sites are these giant FTP repositories of abbreviated filenames. I have no idea which word processor (for example) is the one to download. There are often 30+ files in each directory, and I've spent hours downloading and copying the files, only to find that half of them are in german or written for the TT, or whatever. Could you point me to some good software to start with (i.e. names), and maybe a few links? I've found AtariArchive, LGD, the TOS Software index etc. Anything I'm missing? Thanks everyone! One download alternative might be BBSs. They usually have file description, including what hardware the software will run on.. (see sig) -
Hmm, must have missed it. Its 10:57pm here, and I'm the only one online in the chat room.
-
Wow, good stuff on that page. Thanks for the link, I bookmarked it, and will check it out more thoroughly later. (wife wants computer "right now" and she doesn't understand true computing needs [as in mine])...
-
Hey Doc. Thanks, that would be great!
-
Well, I'll be the first to admit its not the same, but people like me, and a few others (SniperStorm/Arch Mage, for example) are keeping the Atari BBS scene alive and kicking. Try us on for size! Just telnet to: darkforce-bbs.dyndns.org stguild-bbs.dyndns.org These are "true" Atari BBSs, running on real Atari hardware, and using real Atari software...
-
Thanks, I'll have to look that software up, read the docs, and see what, if anything can be done at this time...
-
Oh...hmm...what I really need is someone with "hands on" experience with the Atari software and configs used for FidoNet. I know it was done, I can remember the BBS Express! ST sysops talking about it on the Express support BBS, years ago. Thanks anyways.
-
Hey MetalGuy66. Honestly, I'm not sure if they are still doing the modem thing or not. I hope they are not limited to that. I'm doing telnet with my board. I need to find out lots more info... PS Thanks for calling DarkForce.
-
Any old Atari sysops out there (or anyone else for that matter) who had FidoNet experience back in the day? I contacted the FidoNet site, and they said they would love to have Atari BBSs back with FidoNet... FidoNet was something I never tried back when I had my BBS in the 90's so I've got no first-hand experience at all. Any comments, suggestions, etc, welcome. Thanks.

Hmm, you were talking about a Mega STe, right? If so, then it has to be either TOS v2.05 or v2.06... Mega STe's came with a new control panel with CPX's - control panel extensions. Fairly nice setup, IMHO. You can download it from just about any Atari ftp site, or the like... Try different combo's while booting up. When you see the Atari emblem on screen, hold down shift, if that doesn't work, hold down alt, or control. What it does is bypass starting your hard drive, AUTO folder programs, ACCs/CPXs, etc, so that you wind up at a flat plain TOS lo-res desktop, where theoretically, everything should work. HTHs.
-
Too bad - he's obviously a very talented guy. I talked to him on the phone once, when I upgraded my copy of Geneva/Neodesk to the last version he released. Wish he was still active.... Thanks for the reply. PS From your control panel, you can tell what version of TOS you have, as well as how much RAM... HTHs.
-
The important question is, does he still have *any* interest in things Atari...in other words, any chance he'll resume Atari work...? PS Example, will he patch Neodesk/Geneva so it works on a CT60 equipped Falcon? Thanks!
-
I hope not - too few BBSs left, as it is...

Yes, something along the lines of the Commodore story, "On The Edge, the spectacular rise and fall of Commodore". I've got that book, love to see an Atari equal... -

Thats kind of sad then... I would have liked to think that they were proud of the products that they released, and proud of how many people they affected (I know, both good and bad)... Speaking just for myself, regarding brand loyalty, nothing in any other market has ever inspired the devotion I felt towards, and with, Atari... If pressed, I doubt I could even begin to explain why... -
But valid, none-the-less... Actually no. GEM Desktop originated on the PC and had color there. I believe it was sold by itself at first. I even used to sell Amstrad PCs that included GEM desktop in the states at the time the ST came out and I'm sure the machines were available in Europe months before we got them. Also, the Amiga was in develpment long before the ST and had a working color GUI... it just shipped after the ST. But did the PC have a bit mapped display? That was part of the original claim as well.. In regards to the Amiga, perhaps the Wiki entry should say first commercially available...blah, blah, blah...

This sad message is still up on Wizztronics website
DarkLord replied to Apex's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Hmm, do I remember (still) seeing that on their website? I'll have to go look again. If its not available, they really ought to reflect that on their website...
