1. Anyone have experience with actually installing and using the RSVE serial port mod?

I'm looking for helpful suggestions, comments, hints, do's and don'ts, etc, etc,...

    Thanks!

    1019164

I don't even know what that is...an acrinim for?

    1024450

Honestly, I don't really know what the letters "RSVE" stand for, but I know what it does. Its a hardware based serial port enhancer for ST computers.

Using the RSVE mod and HSmodem you can get 38,400 speeds on standard STs, upwards of 115,200 on accelerated ones.

Love to have a new one installed in my Mega ST... :)

  2. What HD software are you using now? HDDriver just rules. If you don't have it, you could download the demo just to see if it does work with your setup.

    HTHs.

    1024167

My system has HDdriver AHDI 4.2 installed on it right now. That's what it came with when I got it and it's worked fine up to this point, so I thought I'd leave well enough alone.

Well, I can't seem to find the HDdriver executable for initializing&formatting anyway, so I'm going to have to download a version anyway, but I need a full program, not a demo. So, maybe there's and older version that is free, but newer than AHDI 4.2? Well, I need to get some zip disk before I worry about it much more anyway. I just thought I could at least get the drive recognized by the computer, even if it gave me a read error. So far it just says the drive does not exist. I think it might be a drive designation problem still though.

    1024181

Well, my thought behind mentioning the demo was that if you could try it and it worked, then it would be worth buying. Thats all. I'd hate to see you buy it and it not help with your problem. I've never seen an older free version of it, but who knows.

Gunstar, I'd like to contact you by e-mail, if you don't mind. :-)

  3. Since I frequent the 8bit forum the most, I will post this here and hope that word of mouth will spread it to the other forum areas.

    <snip>

I would welcome any and all suggestions to making the site the goto site for finding any and all things Atari. I will be taking the site live in 1-2 weeks. In the mean time, I will be searching compiling a good starting list of sites to link. Make sure your site is one of them.

    Let me know your thought.

    1023822

Sounds like a good idea. Check my sig for my site. :-)

BTW, I was wondering - OT, but in your sig...what is a "540STFM"?

    Thanks!

  4. I picked up this 100MB zip drive at the local thrift store today, as I know other's who have parallel or scsi zips running on their ST's. It only cost me $3 so If I can't get it working on my ST, I guess my laptop has a new toy. Anyway, I was Googling all day trying to figure out how to get this thing working, but couldn't find much info or any drivers or other formatting programs specifically for a zip drive on the ST. Do I just use an HD utility to format a zip disk? By the way, I have a Supradrive scsi which has both a scsi and dma daisy-chain ports. The supradrive's scsi controller handles the port(s) from what I understand (from what little I found out online), although I never got a manual with the Supradrive, something else I was looking for on Google with no luck. I'm plugging the zip drive into the scsi port on the Supradrive. I also know by inspecting the zip drive that it can only be set as either drive 5 or 6. But I haven't been able to get my Mega/STE to recognize it. But I'm not sure if I'm understanding the drive designations correctly or not; are partitions counted as designated drives or just the physical drive itself? I have 2 floppy drives, the Mega/STE's internal HD and the external Supradrive hooked up, and I've gone on the assumption that the floppy drives were designated as 0 and 1, and the internal HD as 2, and the external HD as 3. If this is the case, then I should be able to designate the zip drive as either 5 or 6 becuase they are open designations, right? Or are you unable to skip drive designations on the ST? Do I have to have a 4th designation in the chain first? Or do I have it all wrong? Are partitions counted and/or floppy and HD drives are counted differently since they are hooked up via the different ports? Granted, I have to pick up some zip discs tomorrow, so maybe it can't be recognized without zip disc in it? I'd appreciate any suggestions and links in getting this up and running, initialized&formatted etc.

    1024132

Hey. Well, (this is AFAIK, so don't shoot me if I'm wrong), the floppy drives have *zero* to do with your HD chain. They are A and B, and thats it. It is SCSI so the adaptor is normally ID 0, and it goes up the chain from there. I set my HD next, because the lower the SCSI LUN, the higher priority it gets, from my understanding. Then I set my CDs or in my case, a SyQuest EZ135 on my BBS hardware, and a EZ200 on my CT60 Falcon.

For my SyQuests, which should act a lot like your ZIP drive since they are external SCSI removables too, HDDriver v8.15 here recognizes them just fine. I've got a drive icon on the desktop that works just like a HD icon.

What HD software are you using now? HDDriver just rules. If you don't have it, you could download the demo just to see if it does work with your setup.

    HTHs.

  5. My friend installed it in his MEGA long time ago, but there were some troubles with it and I do not remember how it ended. So any info is welcome.

    1022352

I'd love to know what problems he had. Any chance of finding out?

    Thanks!

  6. Hello guys, there are few changes in this project 22 fev 2006:

Now we want to know who is interested by an IDE hard drive adapter for STE, BUT NOW FOR STF, MEGA ST, MEGA STE too ! (internal , no with cartridge port)

In fews days, I received more than 35 email and If we are 100 (minimum) , Rodolphe Czuba (CT60 creator) will be ready for looking this project so if you are REALLY REALLY interested (only serious guys please), send your (valid) email address to this email [email protected] with this message (it’s an example)

    - Yes, I am really interested by an IDE adapter for my favourite STE (or STF, or Mega ST or Mega STE)

    - If we want to add a "TOS flash switcher(ex:1,06/2,06)" it is necessary to solder. So is it a problem if you must to solder in your Atari for adding this adapter?

    ---  Yes it's a problem, i don't want or i can't to solder.

---  No it's good i can to solder or with my friend.

Don’t ask any info about price, size, tech, etc… it’s just for starting the project

DON’T post your answer on this forum.

    thanks

    bastien

    1018457

    Define "soldering". :-)

Seriously, I mean if its a couple of wires, no problem. If its multiple wires, cutting traces on the MB, desocketing chips 'n stuff...well, thats a whole 'nother ball game.

    Thanks!

  7. aha so you mean the part  which is inside of your space case? But as I wrote before I have Desktopper so I am not sure it is the same, but I think it should

    post-2769-1138556182_thumb.jpg

    1 - white

    2 - blue

    3 - black

    4 - red

    5 - not connected

4 wire is enough - ground, Ucc, data in and data out

    1009051

Krupkaj, do you know if anyone still says the Freekeys kit? Or at least that 5 pin connecter? (DIN?)

    Thanks.

  8. Anyone got, or know where I can find, pin info on the MFP (multi-function-peripheral) chip?

I really need to know the numbers for the pins. I tried googling, but couldn't find anything helpful.

    Don't google "MFP". Google 68901.

In the worst case go to the Freescale (formerly Motorola) web site. The data sheet is available there.

    1021316

You're right. Odd how search engines work sometimes.

    Thanks much! :-)

  9. DUde, I owned an original falcon 030 for a month, couldnt find jack-sh*t as far as network software for it, the OS was clunky crap compared to even AMIGA OS 1.3. ANd to top it all off, a stock A1200 020 blew it's doors off performance-wise. I traded it for a bunch of ATARI 8-bit stuff (most of it in very marginal condition) to an atari freak, who just "had to have" a falcon.

ANd your right, the scope of this discussion is far too indepth to go into hear, especially being off-topic as it is. So I wont. But its not my preference. heh. Its plain fact. I mean I guess you could prefer a TRS-80 to a Pentium IV.. But in reality, one is clearly superior, and from every possible aspect of hardware design, as well as OS functionality, nothing atari ever made even comes close to measuring up to the AMIGA.

Theres countless comparissons on the web, and all you have to do is read and compare features.

Now, like I said, as far as what you can "hack" something into.. Heh. The limits are your patience, your pocketbook, and willingness to run something that has very limited support.

All the hardware Ive got was supported by an entire industry for a long time. Machines with almost identicle configuration to mine rendered and animated all the space scenes in Babylon 5, because there was no other combination of equipment and software that could do it at the time.

SO like I said. I totally admire you for making THAT falcon what it is.  And I own several STs for the same reason that I own an Apple II, and a Commodore 128. There IS software that runs on them that I happen to like.  But to say that it's purely a matter of preference as far as which platform is superior is rediculous.

Anywayze, heres a few more pictures:

Excuse the "grafted together" nature of this last pic, but I couldnt get far enough away from it to get it all in one pic.

    1019764

    <snipped pics>

Owned an A1200. Did not outperform my stock Falcon 030. Especially with sound.

Didn't have a DSP chip either. On/off switch down on the external power supply? Some engineering.

This is my last post here though on this subject - its seriously in the wrong forum. If you want to try to debate this further, try the ST/Falcon forum. I roam there as well. Or comp.sys.atari.st.

    See ya.

  10. Uhh. Yeah.. Mines all factory. Never been soldered on, and everything in it was produced by a major commercial company BACK when the machine was still being sold.  If you wanna see some HACKED-UP AMigas, I can point you to some sites where guys have 233mhz 604e accelerators, voodoo 3 graphics cards, GIGS of ram, god knows what in drives..  My argument is not that people didnt EVENTUALLY make add-ons for the falcon/st/tt line that made it capable of competing spec-wise with AMIGAs.. My argument is that when the AMIGAs & ATARIs were still being  produced, each successive model of AMIGA was so far ahead of anything ATARI had even dreamed of at the time, it was rediculous. ANd this holds true right up until Commodore folded in 93. The current trend in the AMIGA freak world is building G4 based machines, with AGP graphics cards, and support for any hardware they decide to write drivers for. I dont agree with this, because why in the hell not get a powermac and just code an OS for it? Anywayze, Im glad to see youve hacked your falcon up to something that could compete with a mid-late 90s pentium class machine. Nice work. You must really LOVE that ATARI name. Because the machine/OS has never held a freakin candle to whats been available on the AMIGA.

    1019743

Actually I've seen those Amigas - used to own a couple myself. Never saw 10 Amigas yet that I'd trade 1 Atari for. :-)

I understand the point you were making. No problem there. Just wanted to point out that there are a considerable number of CT60/63 owners who aren't a bit upset about your Amiga. :-)

As for your preference for the Amiga thats fine. I, and many other Atari owners don't though.

Anyways, this is waaaaaaay OT for this forum, so lets just leave it at that, okay? I really shouldn't have responded in the first place. My bad.

    See ya!

PS Your 800XL looks nice. I am envious of that. :-)

  11. I think I'm the only one here with a 400.

    1019748

My apologies. I should have respected the forum and ignored the bait.

I promise, I won't let it happen again.

I'd show my stock 800XL and 1050 drive but I'm afraid it pales compared to what most of this crowd has going! :-)

    You guys are just awesome.

  12. Well, I really WOULD.. But this is an ATARI forum and I don't wanna get accused of starting a huge "off topic" thread.

Heheh. and besides.. I dont wanna make the ST/FLACON guys any madder than I already have.

    1019719

    Doesn't bother me a bit! :-)

Atari Falcon CT60 accelerator running at 95mhz, CTcm (clock module) lets me adjust the CPU speed "on the fly". 16 megs ST RAM, 256 megs SDRAM, DSP, Videl, and main bus are all boosted to 40/50mhz and 25mhz respectively. 80 Gig Maxtor IDE HD, Plextor SCSI CDRW, powered by a 425 watt ATX power supply, sitting in a Wizztronics rack case. Stock ATari Falcon keyboard with the "TT-Touch" upgrade, in a FreeKeys case.

    Running MINT/Thing... 'Nix rules... :-)

  13. Strange:

system solutions clearly report in their history as being Atari related (I well remember the times BEFORE AtariWorkshop), and then list the link to the actual Atari 'branch' in the homepage, left column.

The website that appears in place of AW seems to be its webhost, that's why I assume they are down for manteinance or similar

    1018978

Gosh, I hope you're right. They sure did have a lot of great Atari stuff the last time I did manage to get through.

    Here's hoping! :)

  14. Don't know...

I just find a webhost, so I assume they are down for manteinance.

I checked System Solutions, just to be sure they weren't out of business, and they are alive and kicking, and they have a link to atari workshop.

    1018911

But that link doesn't work either. I tried it before I posted here. It takes you to some strange, very non-Atari website.

Further, Uwe Seimet, author of HDDriver has posted this message in comp.sys.atari.st:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Hello,

As the Atari Workshop website has vanished and I have not been able to

reach Atari Workshop by email I have decided to offer the English

version of HDDRIVER *including the English manual* myself.

I am currently revising and updating the English manual. Users ordering

HDDRIVER 8.1 can now choose between the German, English and French

manual. The French manual only covers HDDRIVER 7, though.

For registered users of HDDRIVER 8.1 the current English manual is also

    available separately. Please refer to

    http://www.seimet.de/hddriverprices_english.html for details.

Remember that you can pay with PayPal, which ensures that HDDRIVER can

also be ordered conveniently from countries outside the EU without

having to pay high fees for bank transfers or sending the money in cash.

    Best regards, Uwe

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

So apparently, he can't reach them as well. Sure would hate to see them quit - they had a large inventory online last time I visited there. :-(

  15. Hey guys. I was just wondering, is the Atari Workshop in the UK still open? I know I browsed there a few months ago, and they still had quite a bit of Atari equipment listed.

I went back last night, or tried to. I couldn't find anything "Atari" at their site.

    Thanks! :-)
