I have this same problem with a 1050 unit, but without the Happy unit... Single density format and reads ok, but when I try to format to enhanced density, the head goes up, but doesn't come back to the initial position (gives error when the head reaches the end).

Hi,
I was told that NTSC games can not run in PAL machines, so, how I differentiate PAL/NTSC boxes or cartridges?
Thanks you in advance.
-
Thank you very much for the prompt response

I used the search, but it seems that I'm a bit... unlucky

It would be possible a hardware adapter to run 5200 games in the 8-bit line of computers?

Hi,
Thanks for the prompt response

Hi,
Can anybody point me the approximated dimensions of the Atari 520 STE unit and also the dimensions of the standard box (white with grey line out of the main unit).
Thanks in advance.

That's it, title says everything, just for curiosity...

Ok, let me see if I understand correctly... Now I'm formating disks DSDD, in a PC I'll obtain 360 kb... Do I need a especial type of disk to format in ED?
-
Sure, I use the same disks to format in Atari SD...
I tried to change all the IC on the pcb with a dead drive I have, didn't resolve the problem... (maybe both have the same problem).
-
I'm trying with double sided, doble density disk, Nashua brand...
-
No help available?
The drive almost works well with single density disk, format, writes and reads with no problem... But I don't have any enhanced density disk to test if I can read and write to it...
Also I noticed, that when the drive it just powered on, doesn't read well, or read any at all. Normally, it reads the second disk...
-
I forgot to say that the drive pass all the test in the diskdiag test, except for the Head Step/Settle test.
-
Finally I managed to get working this drive, it seems to be only a speed problem which I solved with diskdiag, a 1050-2-PC cable and ARFD utility... But I'm unable to format disk in enhanced format, altough I can read-write-format single density disk.
I've been watching the drive's head, and when formatting single density disk, it moves down to the end and then come backs to the start. When I try to format enhanced density disk, when it reach the end, doesn't move anymore. When I format from ARFD, I get the error number 144, and when I format from DOS 2.5, it keeps trying again and again.
Where is the problem?

That's my next step

I measured the drive speed with a "mechanical" method to confirm this. I have made a little modification in the small hole to make some periodicall noise, and I recorded it with a computer. Then I have counted the number of "clicks" and divided into the total time. And the speed is something similar to 288, so the problem would be something related to the communication between the drive and the atari, or a electronic problem in the drive or atari, or both...

-
Ok, I think I formatted a disk with that before doing the test, and the disk is double density, not high density.
When I said I entered a few lines, because takes a long time, is because both the short and long version of the program doesn't display anything until the counter I reaches R, so I introduced a print line, to display in which point of the iteration is running.
-
Yes, I'm sure that the program is entered correctly. Also, I entered a few lines to make sure the program is running, because it takes a lot of time.
-
With the drive's speed test I get 10.5337078 which I think is not normal. I'm sure that the drive spins near 288... What could be the problem?
-
-
And how about trying to access the drive from BASIC, without DOS loaded?
-
Is there any way to send commands to the disk drive without DOS loaded? I'm trying to test the drive because I don't know if it's ok or is broken.
Thanks in advance!

I think I clean the head about few years ago, when I start trying to repair it, but I'll do it again

I've tried to change every ic, not only the ones under the shield, between both units, to see wich is causing the non-working condition, but it's seems that all the components are ok. So, maybe the problem is in the analog section...
I want to build the 1050-2-pc, because I don't know if the disk I have are ok (about ten years old

Hi,
I have two 1050 units, and both are in not working condition. One of them power on, but no activity is detected on the drive, no spin up or head movement. The other, powers on, and spin ups, and move the head. With this unit I tried to boot my Atari 800 XL, but I get BOOT ERROR, on the screen all the time. The unit have activity all the time, and spends some time between every "BOOT ERROR", but the head dosn't move at all.
I've searched on internet for usual problems on this drives, and I found two. Problems with the sensor of the head park position. I tested the second drive for this problem, but seems that the drive has a working sensor.
The second problem I found in internet, is a problem with the speed the floppy is working at. It should be 288 rpm, and I tested again the second drive, and I measured, recording the noise that the inner floppy hole makes, and then, with an audio application, counted the number of "noisy clicks" and divided between the time... But I adjusted the pot until I reached 288 rpm, and the problem persisted.
Later I make a XFormer cable (cheap and fast assembling), but I only get it working once, and I don't know why. I almost succeded on formating a disk and copy a disk, altough there were some error on the end of both processes.
I want to make a 1050-2-PC, but if I can't get it working I'll always be in doubt of which component is not working, the cable or the unit...
So, I want to know if someone has any tips for me

Can someone buy an item from eBay for me?

I'm from Spain, and the seller has configured eBay not to allow questions, so I understand that he will never ship to Spain
So, maybe someone can buy it for me, of course, I pay in advance...
