  1. Cool! Can I use one of those shots for my Atari On Film article?

Sure, go ahead and use them. I'll see what other movies I have that you don't have picks for and I'll try to get some shots for you.

Cool deal. I prefer non-zoomed in shots if possible.

    Thanks!

  2. Here's an unofficial conte....I mean.....challenge! Sorry, no prizes other than the pride of knowing you did. OK, The challenge is for all you Photoshop experts out there. Who can recreate the 5200 Cloak & Dagger cart and/or box from the movie to share with all the 5200 fans out there. Here's the best pictures I can get from my video tape.

  3. To be fair, some kids do appreciate older gaming systems.  Nearly a year ago in a topic on this same issue I posted the following:
Tonight a friend came over with her sons, ages 12 and 9. When my friend and I were planning the get-together, she suggested watching some of my DVDs, and I counterproposed playing some “antique” video games, since the boys had previously expressed some curiosity about them. I was surprised when they showed up: the nine-year-old kept crying out “video games” with much enthusiasm in anticipation of the experience. After pizza and some other activities, I broke out the 7800 and my VCS cartridges. They loved it! Not once did the graphics deter them from enjoying the games, and they kept poring through my collection in search of more gems. When they left for the evening, they expressed interest in playing more with my antique games soon. And yes, at home they have a PlayStation and their own GameBoy Colors. So, here are two more lads on whom the charms of the classical era are not lost.
These two boys have played on my Atari systems many times since, still enjoy it, and still ask to play again.

In addition, AtariAge itself has a number of classical gamers from the younger set.

I think there are a couple of factors that will cause a younger player to like Atari or not.

    1. Their age. I think if they're over 15, forget it. They've already spent a lot of time with their friends who have GameCubes, PS2s, & Xboxes.

    2. Have they played games before? If they've NEVER seen a video game before (this links with age too) they will go for whatever they see. My 5 year old nephew has one of those all-in-one NES games that has 54 crappy games on it. He loves it. It's his first video game experience.

There are several other factors too, but I'm not awake enough to put much more thought into it right now.

  4. Hi: I'm new to this system. Are the game carts the same for Lynx and Lynx II? Is there a list of games that were released? thanks

Yes. The Lynx II is basically the same hardware as the Lynx I only spiffier. All Lynx carts work in either system.

  5. 7800 Rampage is one of my fav versions...that reviewer is insane.

Why? The review is quite favorable and it got a final score of 85%. I think he probably just never noticed the blimp before.

  6. I guess I thought there was no blimp in the 7800 version because of Brian Rittmeyer's review over at TAT.

But I guess it does if your character walks off the screen completely and then you restart.

BTW, anyone know Brian's email address thesedays?

  7. However the big problem with the Jag was that there was no real quality control. Nintendo for example had a great quality control (you'll never find a nintendo game with the quality seal that is bad).

However Atari just cared about a high game count, that made them release also those bad ports and crappy 3d games like supercross 3d.

Obviously they didn't understand that it is better to have few good games than many of crap games.

As one who has programmed the Jaguar, wouldn't you say another reason not all Jaguar games are not A++ games is because the programming tools were not up to snuff? Or that the hardware was buggy? Or that just a few small additions to the hardware would have helped a lot?

John Carmac wrote: If the Jaguar had dumped the 68k and offered a dynamic cache on the risc processors and had a tiny bit of buffering on the blitter, it could have put up a reasonable fight against Sony.

  8. PS1 is 32 bits.  Dreamcast is 128 bits.  Xbox is 32 bits.  More bits does not necessarily mean more raw platforming power.  Certianly having a 32-bit data and address bus allows for bigger data manipulation and larger address space over what an 8-bit CPU will give you but it's not the whole story.

That's right. Because the Jaguar is really 240-bit! (64+64+32+32+16!)

    :P

  9. With the Atari in Revenge of the Nerds - I saw it on AMC yesterday and noticed the 2600 - any idea what game he was playing, or if even was a particular game?

I believe it was Spacemaster X-7.

I was taping it yesterday to get screenshots for my Atari on Film page.

  10. I've begun some early work on the CTF map...

The red maze (White Castle) is gone as is the Black Maze (Black Castle). Also the rooms where the cartridges and the magnet are gone. (Wait until you see where I've placed the cartridges!)

I'll probably limit the weapons to the RL, GL, railgun, & shotgun. No real need for the lightning gun or plasma gun.

Also, no powerups aside from the mega health, still located in the Gold Castle.

Oh, and I raised the ceiling in the Orange maze so now you can RJ over it.

Surprisingly, with the Blue and Orange mazes between the castles, the map is looking quite symetrical, and I'm happy that the bots can get from one castle to the other with the help of two bridges. ;)

  11. If you do wanna get some help, though, I'd recommend laying out a pretty detailed design document, within which you clearly describe all aspects of gameplay (weapons, maps, items, abilities, etc.) as well as you can.  A design document will be invaluable to your team, and moreso, to the coder who has to implement everything.

That's good advice. Something I should know to do by default since I'm studying to be a technical writer!

If I can make the time to help, I'll e-mail you, if you'd still be willing to accept my assistance.

Definitely! I'm no coding expert, even though I was going to force myself to learn it with this project. Any assistance you could provide would be invaluable to me. My email is [email protected]

  12. Thanks for making such a cool mod!  I'm one of the /. viewers just reading the posts for the first time, but too cool!

It's been fun working on it. Try and visit the servers running it. I'll be there around 9pm EST.

I've always wanted to re-create the Combat series using the Quake engine, just never had the time or the motivation.  But you may have changed that!

It's been done, and it looks very cool too!

(Now I just need to get those guys to help me out with the Adventure full mod!)

  13. On Wednesday, when I released the map there were a total of 70,500 visitors to TAT. There were also 1.79 million hits to the site that day. This was mostly thanks to slashdot.

But I was wondering... Does the number 1.79 ring any bells for anyone? :)

  14. Fun map to play, the mazes are a little crowded for DM or CTF but they should be great in the full mod.  We only had 3 humans and a few bots, we need some more Q3 players to test it out next time  8)

The nature of the map, I'm afraid. Teaches you to NOT use the RL in close quarters!
