I own an Original Cartridge of H.E.R.O. It's one of my favorite games. An Excellent Title. Good Call Heaven.
-
The 8-bit version is exactly the same at the 5200 version.

I got My three bare units yesterday. have one word, AWESOME! These Work Great. I even went so far as to pull the Ram Chips out of my XL. Pretty Cool. The System works Fine. I'm not quite sure what demos to throw at it. I'm using an NTSC XL. All of Fandals Big game Conversions Work fine, Commando, Mario XE, Etc. Although "The Eidolon" Doesn't Work. I'm Wondering if that's the File or the Upgrade tha is the problem. I have been exceptionally sick, so I haven't had the chance to try any more. Would Someone post some good demos to try that will work on NTSC?

I wasn't taking pot shots at the game at all. You said that it couldn't fit into the constraints of the 5200 system. I compared it against 7800 Tempest (which is the same style of game) and which might fit into those constraints given the resources it uses at the moment. Well, I would agree that the 7800 version that you are working on would probably be capable of being done on the 5200. Tempest Xtreem is Very Big though. 16k alone is taken up by the digital sounds that have to be stored in RAM Because they get used on the fly during gameplay. Not To mention the custom line drawing routines, Multiplexing routines, and combination of PMG's and Software Sprites. There is a lot of Game Going on there. Consequently the DLI's are Overloaded as it is. =) If I took your Statement the wrong way, I apologize. =)

It's also not finished! Best not to call GroovyBee out like that when he's working on something ... I didn't call him out. He made a comment concerning our game and I responded. We are very proud of "Tempest Xtreem" and I will always come to the Defense of it when someone takes pot shots at it. We Worked very hard for 2 years on that game and Crammed That 128k Cart to the absolute Limit.
-
Interesting! The 7800 version of Tempest uses 15K for its video buffer (160B) in the cart's RAM and just less than 1K internal RAM for the game. Maybe I should do a 5200 cross port? The 7800 Version of tempest Doesn't have 7 Music Tracks, 5 Digital sounds and 64 levels.

But you can have graphics like this on the 7800 with 1/4 the amount of RAM :- Hardware collision detection isn't an advantage if the game diosn't use it. I think the 7800 Would have been a wonderful machine if they has at least put a Pokey chip in it for sound. I Can't Stand to play a game with sound so atrocious as that. Graphics mean Very little in respect to overall Playability of a Game. Some of the best playing game I've every seen had terrible graphics. Take Pitfall II for Example. The Graphics weren't anything to write home about. The 8bit version was just a slight upgrade from the 2600 version (Although that extra cavern was awesome). but the good control and Fun little adventure soundtrack was what sold me and it's what keeps me playing it. Also, Is it just me or does the 7800's Color Palette always look Dull. The Colors were just never quite as bright and resilient as the 8-bit. The hardware collision detection in the 8-bit/5200 was a big advantage for about 50% of the games out there. it was great for games that needed that fast detailed detection. But you had the choice to use PMG's, Bounding boxes, Or Both if you knew what you were doing and you had a Sound chip that to this day people love hearing. That alone is enough to make the 8-bit/5200 chipset out shine the 7800. =) BTW: just because a game Doesn't use the Hardware collision detection doesn't mean that it's not an advantage of the chipset. It's like having 4 wheel drive in a car, just because I have never used the 4 wheel drive in my car doesn't mean it's not an advantage that I might want to use someday.

Specifically Moon Patrol...the number one reason I can't ignore the 5200. Second reason being the super sweet Trak-Ball... Moon Patrol on the 5200 and 8-bit is a great game, but the XL/XE will always out do (in my opinion) the 5200 because of the controller issue. no amount of "Fixing" the 5200 Controllers will ever make the 5200 superior. Here are some Points in response to the 5200 vs 8-bit discussion that seems to have developed here. 1 - what good is a system that you have to go and immediately buy a different controller just to make it playable. 2 - don't tell me the original controllers are playable. anything that doesn't self center is a poor excuse as a controller when it's being used for playing classic arcade games. 3 - Don't bother mentioning Centipede or missile command. There are good track ball versions of those out there for the 8-bit. as for Pole Position, it had great control on the 8-bit. there are a great many 5200 people that have said so themselves. 4 - Not To Mention the Ram Differences (8-bit,48k vs 5200,16k) and cart Size limitations (8-bit,128k vs 5200,32k). The Numbers Speak for themselves in that category. (These Cart size and RAM issues are the Main Reasons that we never did Tempest Xtreem for the 5200. It just couldn't handle it.) Bottom line is that the 5200 takes quite a hit when it comes to the controllers. Most 5200's that are for sale DO NOT come with a good 3rd party controller (like the wico). when one wants to buy one of those controllers, it usually ends up costing more than the person paid for the unit itself and that's just wrong. Now after saying all this I must interject that I DO own a 5200 and have the Best Gold Joysticks. They do work decently. the system is fun. but, unless you're a Hard Core collector like I am, it hardly justifies paying for all the junk necessary to enjoy the system. my 5200 system sits in storage in favor of my 8-bit being hooked up. The only game that is NOT available for the 8-bit from the 5200 Library is adventure II. I personally Don't think that game is reason enough to spend all that money on a console with that many flaws like the 5200.

In order of importance colour depth and resolution come before either of those. Err, Gyruss was implemented with lower resolution on purpose to get the faster and smoother motion. That's not really true. The lower resolution was really Parker Brothers Cheap attitude at the time (time of the Game Crash) because of their money losses on their marketing (Ex: the heavy duty boxes that the games were sold in and Artwork they had to pay through the nose for). When you think about it, they were kinda stupid to not sink the money into the game it self and worry so much about the cover material and Artwork. They had a version that was much smother than the version that was released (that version is pictured on the back of the boxes, LOL) but they scrapped it so they didn't have to pay an outside developer for the work.

In the Arcade you could get hit at the end of the girders, but not in the middle. the atari version was a little too sensitive to marios head getting hit. The Picture here shows an example of an area Circled in yellow where mario can get hit in the head and the purple is an area where we fixed it. Just like the Arcade.

New Video Adapter for S-Video On Atari ST/TT Systems
Kjmann replied to Kjmann's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I give up - here at work we are forced/beaten into using IE8 and I tried everything, and after about 20 attempts I surrender. Microsoft Products - they may be bloated, but gosh they're hard to use! Perhaps someone can e-mail me the highlights of this forum. for anyone having difficulty making a new account, Send me an email ( [email protected] ) and I will create an account for you on my end. =) -

Exactly, once again. I never saw any flamewars. This entire thread is because of someone's unrealistic expectaions, inability to ignore what they should be ignoring, and obvious hypersensitivity. Please seek help. I don't know that it's unrealistic to expect people to act in a civil manner in a public place. This is of course no different than someone going to a pub/bar or a party and being expected to act in an adult manner. I myself have let a couple of people bring me down to a low level and "bash them back" so to speak (something that I'm not proud of doing). In defense of that, it is hard to NOT want to bash someone that keep hammering on you. It's easy to tell someone to turn the other cheek, but sometimes hard to actually do it. None the less, it's still inappropriate for someone to keep slapping people with insults and tirades because others don't see things their way. By the way, the "please seek help" comment is a good example of this. it was kind of an uncalled for comment on this mans opinion and makes it seem like you're calling him mentally unstable just because he wants a place to chat without rude comments. this was not an attack on you, wood_jl. If you didn't mean it in that manner, I apologize. that is, however, the way it came across.

There was no reason for that comment, dude. if you have a legitimate comment or statement to make here in reference to the discussion, then make it. otherwise you should move on. there is no need for insults in this discussion. we don't need to start a flame war.

R54 Does not need to be changed. You should put it back. =)
