  1. that's OK, but I didn't suggest 15khz mode, just 1.79 mhz on one voice (choose from voice 1 or 3), and NOT in 16bit mode. Yup, that's the standard problem with gen. C/E: They both are Pokey-generator C, be it that gen. E uses a different table. Generator C uses the 5-step periodic part of the 4bit polycounter and generator E uses the 15-step part (which sounds more metallic). C and E modes are not mutually compatible in the sense that they can sound together in a harmonic way. Also they give a problem with tuning-compatibility with the gen. A melody part, though indeed gen. E is the more tone-pure bass. ah, yes now that i reread your post i see where you were going. unfortunately i would have to practicly rewrite the entire song to make that work <1.79/gen 2> the song has such a large range in the melody that i would have to make 3 instruments to cover the octaves that go sour and strange. also gen 2 doesn't have the high range with out getting "fuzzy/distorted" and if I lower everything an octave i lose some of the low notes because the pokey can't play that low of notes. but I'd like to try that gen in another song sometime. =)
  2. The Reason I didn't lower it anymore is because the pokey volume changes to drasticly if i go another step lower. then the harmony gets lost altogether. as for 15khz mode <hardsynth method> I hate it. In my opinion it sounds like crap and requires to much fooling around with the instuments to get it in tune. i personaly just don't like the sound of it. emkay aproched me many times about it. i just not a fan of it. I like the sound of the standard pokey mode. i did try generator C at first and i sounds sour in spots. I wanted more backbone to the bass anyway and generator E supplies that for me. If I was able to i would use a 16 bit bass table but i tend to run into problems when you try to run it on a real single pokey machine. gets real sour for some reason. i think it has something to do with the way the atari calls to both chip. like the 16bit is trying to bleed over both chips. and loosing somethin in the prossess. besides 16bit bass is really not possible if i need to leave the 4th channel open for chris. just not enough voices. generator E gives me the Hard Hitting/heavy Driving Back bone I believe this song should have. Thanks for you suggestion though =) Heres the newsest versions 50 and 60hz for download. i found a mistake in one of the combo instruments where the bass drumm was getting lost in the shuffle. 3. Sounds better (though a bit slow...also on NTSC) Only one thing: maybe you should put the second (melody-) voice volume a bit lower (...than the volume of the first (melody-) voice). Now the first and second voice have the same volume, though they play different harmonic roles, i.e. the second voice is not coherent with the first voice, but plays a more independent melody which belongs more to the 'background' of the music. the distribution of the voices along the left/right pokey is quite O.k. Ah, You mean the harmony is too loud. I was wondering about that. ok i bring it a bit lower. Thanks for the input. here are both the 50hz and 60hz versions with the harmony volume a bit lower. 4. It was suggested to me quite some time back that i try to combine some instruments for the single pokey version of the space harrier main theme. well I've been messing with the idea and tweeking some instruments for about a month now an i think I have got a good set of instruments that won't sacrifice quality or screw up the bass line. tell me what you guys think of it. when played in stereo mode you will get a nice full sound from the music. and in single/mono mode. you will get a cool COMPLETE version of the song. harmony and all. This version is in 60 HZ for all you guys who would like to play it on your real ataris' UPDATE: Download my songs from my website http://webpages.charter.net/windwar
  5. Well, I decided that maybe I could do a better job on the main theme. Call me a perfectionist if you want. lol =) I originally used the Space Harrier MOD as a reference and was never quite satisfied with it. So This Is a ReWrite From Scratch. Hopefully I Captured the Spirit of the original this time. I Really Want Your Input on This One Folks. Post Your Comments For Me. Is It Better that the other one i did or is it worse. =) Remember to run it at 50Hz, and it works on a duel pokey or single. 6. To Save Time and Space for the Forum, Chris <sheddy> Suggested that I create a thread for the music I'm doing and use it alone from now on. so here it is. the following zip file contains all of my completed work (and a couple not quite done), including some new stuff i just sent to chris for use with space harrier. as always all comments are welcome. =) AXK8 is my attempt at a MOD conversion. Which is why it sounds so crappy. when i have time i'll work on it some more. shotdark is my try at Henry Mancini's "A Shot in the Dark" I Still have a long way to go on it. 7. Sounds very good, but probably not as intended, since I am running an NTSC 130XE with just a single PoKey. Stephen Anderson ah yes. it is done for an atari 50hz but what you hear in the single pokey sound is the scaled back version for folks who don't have a duel pokey. the game music will give you a normal version foryour single and will sound even cooler on a duel. but i tried to make it sound pretty cool on the single. i'm glad you liked it.
  8. I did Some Touch ups on these fixed the drums on Uriah, they sounded sloppy. also fixed some sour notes in both. Go ahead and post some comments folks. i like to hear your input. =)
  9. here are some more of the musics that i sent to chris. See this link for all my musics in the future http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...=102693&hl=
  10. I was noticeing that when your playing an 8 channel RMT on a single pokey system that it just ignores the the right side altogether. so I did an 8 Channel version of the music with the left side being made for a single pokey. <channel 4 empty for SFX> and the right for someone who may have an upgraded pokey system to listen to the 8 channel mix. If chris uses this it will take advantage of both worlds. Here it is. Comments always welcome. =) See this link for all my musics in the future http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...=102693&hl=
  11. hmmm, I think you should look at this from the other side. When you use hardsynth instruments in 15khz mode you will have to fit the music to the instruments, because it's a totally different approximation of 'making sound'. You can not always make 'traditional' Pokey tunes with the hardsynth setting (though '15khz-setting' is meant here. Hardsynth means just the opposite of 'softsynth'). Therefore some musicians should spend some time playing with these settings such that they can compose atari music with the hardsynth-type instruments. Well, Accually I didn't use 15khz mode. this is standard. I just used a couple of filtered instruments and a 16bit bass table. although without the filtered instruments and 16bit bass i still had an issue with the pitch being exact. =)
  12. I read a post by emkay today in the "Magical Sound Shower RMT 8 Channel w/synth Instruments" Thread. Emkay had this to say in commenting on one of the songs i did. <quote> It seems, you have the right ear for the "over all" correct pitch. So, why don't you give the hardsynth method a try? If you have a look at my thread, I made examples of a possible conversion. particular the popcorn tune, has sounds built in, that can easily be listen to, because pokey is not "yelling". This "crying the balls of", destroyes the fun to listen at almost every tune. "Hardsynth" makes it possible, to have "straight" sounds. <unquote> so i ask the question: Is the hard synth method worth using? Well, to Start off let me say that Emkays instrument work is VERY cool. Can't knock the cool stuff he has come up with and in pokey music he is definitely a force to be reckoned with. but, my only problem is that the hard synth method musix sound "sloppy" for lack of a better word. someone commented in a thread earlier <don't remember which one> that he thought that the use of a 15khz and 64khz pokey combined <duel pokeys of course> was the best solution. this is something that i have tried and found that it is a very good idea. but only in some cases. my space harrier song sounded terrible when i tried to convert it to hardsynth. it sounded "ok" when i tryed to add a filtered instrument to it. and overall sounded best <at least in my opinion> as a standard 64khz pokey song. on the other hand i believe that magical sound shower was best suited for filter instruments in 8 channel mode. The songs I'm currently working on I am trying several different ways. so I ask all of you. Is Hard Synth the way to go? is that the sound you like best? or is it too "messy" sounding. =) At any rate, I'm enjoying doing these pokey tunes. hope chris <space harrier project> will like the new boss/bonus round musix when i'm done.
  13. This Is The Final Version!!!! finally found a mistake in the rhythm in the beginning of the song. So Here It Is Folks!!! I had Fun Doing This One.
  14. Hopefully this is the final version. Let me know what you all think. Also Stay Tuned For the 1st two boss musix for Space harrier and the stage 5/bonus round. =) See this link for all my musics in the future http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...=102693&hl=
  15. Well, the pitch of generator C (and RMT's generator E bass tables) is not always like it should be, that's why you can use 15khz mode to get better pitched bass notes with generator A. Because you also have a filter voice this should be less a problem did you ever try the 16bit bass table. It's generator C with a 16bit table to extend your resolution. You have 8 voices, thus combining 2 of them into a clearpitched bass track is not a real problem. In RMT you must use 'generator 6' which is in fact Pokey-generator C with the 16bit table. mux Well Here is a work in progress using the 16bit bass <generator 6> is this what you mean? Sal <kjmann> some comments needed i.m.h.o.: -on the bassdrum you should have less noise, it just sounds like a cardboard box that's kicked: maybe you use too low notes on it. maybe you can try somewhat higher notes and more downward portamento -the filtered voices don't seem to be very stable. they sound a little crackly and slightly too low in pitch: maybe you can raise pitch by 1 point. After that you can remove the instability of the sound by putting back the filter frequency difference back to zero at the end of the envelope. -the 16bit bass sounds clearer now How About this? =) See this link for all my musics in the future http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...=102693&hl=

  17. question: did you use the 15khz mode in this one? and what type of generator did you use for the bass? A or C? i.m.o. the overall sound is a little bit better, but less pitch-perfect than the previous version no, i didn't use the 15khz mode. and i used the C generator for the bass I haven't figured out the use for 15khz mode yet. except that it seems to make everything a lot lower in pitch. sound nasty when i use it.
