Opinion of Genesis sound capabilites and soud chips.
chrisbid replied to ATARI7800fan's topic in Sega Genesis
But the guy promised it would happen this time just like he promised in the early 90s! Anyway, back to the topic. Has anyone tried making an actual synthesizer with the YM2612 sound chip in the Genesis? I'm thinking of putting that on my projects list along with a Commodore 64 sound chip synthesizer. Someone managed to simulate one with software: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYXvgpK2_xo years ago, i remember paul slocum talking about building a synthcart for the genesis. but nothing ever came from it. -
7 biggest video game console failures.

it is true that sales numbers in themselves do not equal quality however there is something to be said about those games that literally push hardware sales. think about the vcs before and after space invaders. think about the video game market before super mario bros. think about the sega genesis before and after sonic the hedgehog. think about what analysts thought about the wii before wii sports got into the hands of people. there were dozens, if not hundreds of "top selling" games in the monthly sales charts throughout the years. there is a wide range of quality in these titles. but there is a threshold that is admittedly difficult to compute, where sales indeed show quality. -
7 biggest video game console failures.

I think that is also beside the elephant in the room, the kinds of games Sega excelled at were losing popularity at home. It is confusing that Tekken, Ridge Racer and Wipeout became so popular in the West while Virtua Fighter Remix and 2, Fighting Vipers, Daytona, Sega Rally and even Cyber Sled/Gran Chaser were just overlooked by the masses. The chief problem was that completely new games in the Arcade/Action genres were stagnant if not in decline in popularity at the generational shift. The Dreamcast failed because Arcade/Action games and new games were all but dead by then. Yu Suzuki went on the record that he left Sega after 2004 because they couldn't make new games due to the lack of marketing data on how they would sell. Sega's franchises failed to take hold on all of the other platforms after 2001 because people wanted to play Urban murder simulators, First Person Shooters and Skate board games. Sega has had to buy developers up to come close to any of these "Core" genres, their chief creative teams hardly tried to come up with similar games. to add to this, i would say none of those playstation titles you mentioned had a sonic the hedgehog impact for the playstation. they were the default fighting, racing, and action game to buy once you purchased a playstation. the 32bit generation more-or-less lacked a true killer app. final fantasy vii comes close, it helped legitimize the playstation... it was a high budget "serious" game. and after its release in 1997, the saturn died and the n64 slowly faded from the picture. but the market was wide open, and had somebody stepped up and provided that title, the tables couldve turned. -

we can talk about segas deck chairs all we want. a later saturn launch, no 32X, price points, etc but segas biggest problem was the iceburg. they did not have the proverbial "killer app" that got people to buy new hardware. had sega produced a game that resonated with consumers the way sonic the hedgehog did for the genesis (or virtua fighter 2 for the saturn in japan), the platform that game appeared on wouldve had a longer shelf life. -
i saw these at toys r us a few weeks ago cool, yet pricey

you dont like the music from sonic the hedgehog or streets of rage? -
intertest in NES collecting is now beginning to peak. games like contra and punchout are bonafide classics, but did not have sales numbers like super mario bros. so there is some relative scarcity there. but as long as you dont need to have a particular game right away, you can find copies of these games for under 10 dollars. just do some searching.

mr dream's punchout was an early 90's reissue of Mike Tyson's punchout. like the grey legend of zelda cart it is slightly more scarce than the original, but not to a degree that makes it more valuable money-wise.

youre right, the genesis was among the last consoles that played 'chip tunes' rather than samples or redbook audio. and chip tunes in general are more memorable than modern game music. -
oh yeah, i also have a complete US O^2 collection. I am not sure if I will go after the homebrews or not.

does it include the turbo booster? (A/V output rather than RF) i have no idea what constitutes a good price anymore. i bought mine back in the late 90s for 30 dollars. most people today would probably consider that price a steal. 40-50 dollars seems to be the average going price for any random non-mainstream console these days. Playstation One and Sega Genesis consoles seem to be the only real bargains around anymore.

in terms of game libraries, the early intellivision stuff can almost be matched up title for title with early atari games. the bulk of colecos library were arcade ports, which was also the focus of atari at the end of the crash, and intellivision tried to go that route, but lacked licensing deals with most arcade game companies. i will say that after the intellivision, it seemed everyone assumed 12 digit keypad controllers were the future.

can an expert give a quick rundown of all the various turbo graphx and duo units without getting uber wikipedia technical? -
Opinion of the PC engine Duo-R
chrisbid replied to ATARI7800fan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
i dont know the differences between the various turbo duo models, but with all the fantastic options for snk emulation, i would make the trade. turbo duos are fairly hard to come by, and the lineup is a bit more diverse than the neo geos. -
Ah, but were those the original releases? NO! They were Japanese releases. Yes, they came first, but they were renamed when they were released in North America. Period, end of story. Retconning by Japanese game publishers does not erase what was printed on original North American releases. how far do you take this? do you call it an NES or a Famicom? do you call it a Genesis or a Mega Drive? do you call him Mega Man or Rock Man? do you call him M. Bison or Vega? do you call it Baseball or Yakyuu? do you call it The Legend of Zelda or Zelda Hyrule Fantasy? different regions, different names
-
i know the long term plan for intellivision productions was to release cartridges of their prototype games. sadly, their website no longer has the detailed info on their various unreleased games. it was quite good.
-
are you a language noob? when a game has a different name in japan, no matter if it came there first or not, it is simply a different name. japan's names for things are not 'real', 'actual', or 'original'. they are simply 'japanese' can the differences be confusing, annoying, obnoxious, etc? of course. but no amount of retconning will change what names and numbers appeared on cartridges, boxes, title screens, and instruction manuals in the united states when the games in question were first released in this region.

i have never seen any rf switchbox that had more than three inputs my solution is to have rf attached systems share a single cable. the colecovision, 7800 and intellivision all have detachable rf cables. if the systems are all next to one another, simply move the cable from one system to another as needed.

So how many grey NWC 1990 were released?
chrisbid replied to Uzumaki's topic in Classic Console Discussion
there were only 90 handed out to NWC finalists (30 cities, 3 age group winers). there were likely more copies, but nobody will ever know how many there were and what happened to any copies beyond those 90.
